I was reading an article (yes I know shocker that I read) from the Centre Daily Times. They made a valid point about Teasdale and with his redshirt in jeopardy would we see him at Reno in preparation for the Scuffle. Even wondering if we’d possibly see Teske there as well to get some more matches under his belt before the scuffle as well. I know “typically” the NCAA handsouts waivers like hot cakes during the off-season but as of now it seems we can assume and pencil in Teasdale as the 125er after the scuffle

I am not sure why the CDT would have Teasdale/Teske competing in Reno to get some matches. The Wilkes Open is Saturday, that would seem to be a much better financial option for some competition. Wrestle Saturday, home Sunday for a few days with Christmas at home.

Yeah, redshirts have to pay for their own travel. though it’s the right direction for Brody (west).

The writer seems a bit confused. Why would Teasdale's redshirt be in jeopardy? He hasn't wrestled any matches at all, let alone any matches representing PSU.

I think the problem is there is no term to cover the situation - even Cael stumbled. Is it a gray shirt year or has the gay shirt not started if a waiver for Fall granted. Or is it a red shirt year that lead to a sixth year injury waiver. Probably need an NCAA ruling to define the terms.

I'm confused by pretty much the entire post:
  • How/why is the redshirt in jeopardy?
  • Why go all the why to Reno at own expense?
  • What waivers does the NCAA hand out like hot cakes?
  • How/why would we assume that Teasdale would be the starting 125er after the Scuffle?

Well, one thing is clear.....over on HR this will be the biggest conspiracy since JFK. :)

When a student athlete leaves and re-enrolls the redshirt is done unless granted a waiver by the NCAA which he might get. Why not go to Reno over the Wilkes barre open. Who the hell is going to go to the Wilkes barre open and compared to wrestling better competition at Reno. Yeah it might be at your own expense but if you are passionate about the sport and want to get Better why not face better competition than d2 and d3 schools.
And if he loses his redshirt than he would have to wrestle right away.

I've never heard anything like that. Can you give us the Section in the NCAA Manual where it says that?

Hmmm, I heard somewhere Voldemort has a good attourney who specializes in twisting NCAA/Big10 rules into a pretzel

When redshirting you have to work towards your degree. By leaving you are no longer working towards your degree which means once you come back you can’t still have your redshirt. I don’t know though what do I know (apparently nothing). You seem like you’ve been doing this longer than me.

Gay shirt? Not there's anything wrong with that ...

I gotta ask? Why do you refer to lil’ nicky as Voldemort? Seems like you’re giving him waaay too much credit.

Some of y’all are the guy who married a doctor super model but still hold a grudge against your high school girlfriend.

Nick leaving freed up scholarship money for other guys. You made out just fine. Name calling a kid because he thinks he’d be happier somewhere else is just ridiculous.

Agreed. But for now in fun, he deserves the reference 'he who should not be named'. If/when RBY takes him out I will probably feel differently.

Clock, 5 years to do 4.
A redshirt (generally) is something you put on after the year.
Once your clock starts you have 5 years to get your 4 competition years in. Medical conditions and such have led to waivers granting a 6th year to get those 4 years in.
Teasdale's clock is running, his withdrawal could lead to a request to reset that clock.

The leaving, coming back thing you stated is incorrect

I'm pretty sure this is pure speculation and we have no evidence that Gavin is jeopardy of losing his redshirt. I'm almost positive how you explained it is not how it works.

Well, if he is enrolled next semester he will be working toward his degree. Right?

You're over thinking this, like any other wrestler he has 5 years to wrestle 4. If there is a waiver it's about being eligible to wrestle this year even though he might not have enough credits. If he doesn't wrestle this year he'll still have 4 years eligibility left. Call it a red-shirt, call it gray-shirt, call it whatever you want.

In general, to my knowledge, a withdrawal does not pause the eligibility clock. But a withdrawal should also not affect a redshirt status. Ivies often withdraw wrestlers from school to gain a “redshirt” since the school doesn’t allow redshirt years. But there is no effect on the NCAA status.

What is confusing is this withdrawal occurs in the first semester. I still don’t see where redshirt status is directly affected by the withdrawal. The only question I have is: since the complete withdrawal occurs in the first semester, did the clock actually start, was he considered enrolled for a semester that effectively doesn’t exist. THAT would cause the greyshirt comment. Meaning first semester enrolled is coming up. And as I mentioned previously, he would be allowed to practice and compete as soon as the last semester was complete.

So....it’s not clear to me about the clock and what is the actual enrollment date. Whereas I have not seen anything previously where an withdrawal basically blows up an elegibility feature.

Cael said he's applying to count this year as a medical hardship, which would make this year a grayshirt unless Teasdale wrestles varsity.

Why not take Cael at his word until that application is adjudicated?

I don't see any reason to not take Cael at his word which is why I found this thread strange. Cael has given details about what the plan is for Gavin so I'm not sure why speculating on something that contradicts this is even necessary.

It's confusing but my understanding is once you become academically ineligible you lose your ability to participate with the team in any capacity and any scholarship funding for that year. Also, you are only given three seasons of competition, however you can earn a fourth season by completing 80% of your undergraduate degree before your fifth year of college starts. So, as long as you complete 80% before your fifth year, the year you lost will essentially serve as your redshirt year. Now for the hardship waiver. A hardship waiver can be applied for by the school on behalf of the student-athlete. The waiver is administered by the conference office or the NCAA. If they deem that there were extraordinary circumstances preventing the student athlete from sustaining his/her eligibility then the student athlete can have their eligibility reinstated. I could be off but this is how I understand the rules.

My personal experience is that early withdrawal is rarely a good thing and can, in fact, be quite messy.

I understand Cael has far more experience than me in this world but same time in the interview he says it is a possibility. im not disagreeing with you but Cael isnt the NCAA and they ultimately have the final say.

its a discussion/forum board. not for nothing if you found this thread strange then there is no need to comment. but last i checked i thought a forum was an open discussion. havent seen too many student athletes withdraw or leave a program for all of 20 something days and then come back the following semester. so yes forgive me for trying to converse and obtain more knowledge about the situation and have a little banter. by all means if you know more im here to learn more about a situation as uncommon as this one.

Again, I could be off but I thought what Cael said was if he's granted the waiver he could be back with the team as early as this past Saturday, and possibly compete at the scuffle. I do not believe this year would serve as a grayshirt. I believe the waiver if granted would reinstate Gavin's eligibility.

Because it is more fun to mindlessly speculated from a uninformed position than work.

See this thread and especially Dice's comment in post #18 (fight rhe urge to linger at the partial redshirt pic at #12).

Granted that Dice interpreted Cael's words without specific inside knowledge -- but given who Dice is and how tied in he is to HS and college programs, his is the best interpretation we're gonna get.

Everything else is pure spitballing.

I see. I just don't understand how he would be back in the room with the team and possibly competeing at the scuffle if he were greyshirting. Maybe dice could offer some insight?

Does Scuffle allow greyshirts? I thought not, i thought it allowed redshirts but was not a true open tournament that allowed greyshirts, more like an invitational. So, if I am correct, if he wrestles then it would be a redshirt year, if not then it could be a greyshirt year if approved.

I may be wrong, and, according to my wife, I often am wrong. ;)

It is my understanding that once the eligibility clock starts, it doesn't stop, except for Olympic red shirt. If withdrawing from school for a year pauses it, Cassar would be a JR since he wasn't enrolled for a year after his surgery.

I thought a grey shirt meant deferred enrollment. I thought you couldn't sign a LOI or enroll in the school to be considered a grey shirt. It may have something to do with receiving scholarship money as well? Which is why Brooks, Beard, and Nevills aren't on campus or with the team?

It's all confusing, glad I don't have to keep all those rules straight.

DYNASTY TO THE MAX for years and years....WOW !!!! Hope Gavin gets to red shirt one year to get 20 to 25 colleges matches under his belt before he wins the National Championship as a red shirt freshman...His number 1 partner will be RBY who is looking for a National Championship this year....He will also have 3 other studs around his weight...125. GREAT time to be a PSU fan....Gee wiz.
