The real problem with the Penn State BOT (and, arguably ALL University BOT's)........

...they're not in it for the team (i.e., University). They're in it for themselves.

Universities are nothing more than another personal private country club that they can use to justify their own self importance. The decisions they make are rarely (IMO) in the best interests of the University (or team).

Why should they care, anyway? They usually have no ties to the University. And, their Trustee status is simply one stepping stone of many to more lucrative positions and business deals.

Maybe...just maybe........

Agreed...but let me know when you find someone who is over the age of 25 and purports to be a "team player" and I'll show you someone that is either naive or a liar.

Personally, I think the BOT should be made up of the heads of each Branch campus. They would all have skin in the game, and all have an equal say in what happens with PSU. It would also stop these outsiders from using PSU to advance their own personal interests.

So, that would include the BOT alumni, who are portrayed here as fighting for justice, right?

This is a tough issue. It would be wonderful if every trustee had equal skins in the game, but it's also important to have outside perspective. So the question becomes - how do you make the job be sufficiently important to everyone who serves, yet avoid making your board look as inbred as a stereotypical West Virginia family tree?

I would think that BOT leadership should be around made up from 30% internal leaders (main and branch campuses), 30% alumni, and 40% outside.
