There is no better team in baseball right now than the Pittsburgh Pirates.

I went to the country oldies channel. No way I thought they woulda won.
This is like the championship Pirate teams of old. With this pitching staff they are almost never out of games. This team is every bit as good as the Cardinals and this series tells me the Bucs are a bit better. Of course, the All-Star break could cool them off, but baseball is fun again in Pittsburgh.

Best to all you Buc fans.

I think a big part of the reason I have no problem at least putting one foot on board is because of just how likeable that team is. McCutchen is probably my favorite player in baseball. Guys like Walker, Marte, Melancon and just the whole group are hard not to like.

They are sort of like the Warriors in basketball. Just seem like a team of good guys who are good on and off the field. I really do hope you guys win it.

Gen. Gloom & Doom must be really pissed about now folks! Knowing him, he was just oh so ready to rub salt in the wound of all Pirate fans after the Red Birds took the lead in tonight's game & last nights game!

Hi General! How's that crow tasting tonight??

LOL!!!

I don't know how Hurdle is as far as being a tactician(and really baseball managers don't really have to be over the top) but he reminds me of Charlie Manuel a good bit. I mean that as a compliment to him. Even when everyone was screaming early on in Manuel's tenure that the ship was sinking he pretty much dug in and fired back @ the Philly media. Hurdle is definitely a good guy to have running the Pirates right just like Manuel was when he took over for Bowa. Don't get to high or low and eventually the talent of your team will win out.

Classy GLOV. Stay classy! We don't want to be like those arrogant Cardinal fans.

Saturday night's game was epic. Great that McC hit the walk off homer, especially since they were giving him the high tight fastballs when they "intentionally, unintentionally" walked him earlier. (not to mention extending his hitting streak).

Great mo going into the All Star break. Fun team to root for.

Hey Buccos fans: Congratulations,. and keep it up. Sweeping the Cardinals is a legit accomplishment. Nothing against the Cards, but I sure would like to see the Bucs overtake them for the Division title.

Being the consummate Bucco worrier that I am, one cautionary note to ponder. After the break the Pirates play 12 of 16 on the road, while the Cards are at home for 14 of 16. This will be a very critical time for them to hold their own.

The Bucs are above .500 on the road. No one is playing better baseball. 12 on the road? They will win 8.

I was thinking this morning, imagine if the Pirates were on the Cardinals side of what happened this series. Think what kind of meltdown we'd be seeing from many about how the bullpen blew so many leads. Yet it's clear nobody thinks the Cards are suddenly an average team that can't close out games just because of this series.

Just something to keep in mind for the nattering nabobs of negativity when they feel the need to overreact the next time the Pirates have a rough patch. Because with 75 games to go, there'll be a few tough ones in there.

Kruk said something last night that I thought was pretty insightful, -Kruk also said the night before, that a ball hit into left field, by a Cardinal, was nothing to worry about. It ended up being a home-run. He was rather sheepish the rest of the broadcast.

I think that mindset is because it is the Cardinals we're talking about. Their track record speaks for itself. Rightly or wrongly, Pirates fans psyche (as you know, mine included) is still a little fragile. The important thing is we all care about them.

Hey, abusive spouses "care about" their significant others too, that doesn't make the abuse ok!

Though for 20 years we were the victims of the abuse in that analogy, so maybe it is ok.

Geez Cincy, quite a leap for an analogy.;) As far as the "caring" thing goes, any sports franchise would rather hear criticism than expereince indifference. Main point was, I don't think the confidence among the fan base is rock solid as yet. And to a degree it's understandable given the 20 year thing. Fans being fans
That said, like you I've always had confidence in this management team. As Nutting once said (and was skewered at the time by the local media), it may be the best in professional sports. A pretty fair argument could be made for that now.

Here's a Cardinal fan response! Congrats to the Buccos on a great series win. Lots of baseball left and if the Pirates stay on their current tear the division is well within reach (as we know a "slump" of some sort is inevitable). Two very good teams battling to every last out, lots of fun to watch. I wouldn't dismiss the Redbirds though, some eggs return to their basket very soon, Holliday, Garcia and Walden (all top shelf talent)....and Harrison in a few weeks to the Bucs. It's going to be a fun race to the end, and interestingly enough, even when the Pirates were struggling they always seemed to give the Cardinals fits. I'm interested to see if the Cardinals stand pat or actually go for a first basemen to improve the offense. Do you see the Bucs making any moves?

You don't win the WS in July. The '11 Phils were the best team this century in the NL and they didn't win the big one. Do your talking in October.

Hard to say. It's definitely a seller's market and I don't think either team absolutely has to make a move. Both place a high value on prospects and are very measured and deliberate in their approach. We'll see.

Lots of chatter out here on the West Coast about the Dodgers maybe picking up Cole Hamels. A few reports even mention the Giants taking a run at Hamels, although I doubt that.

Was wondering what the papers back there are reporting about where Hamels might go. Also, if the Bucs are doing this well, might they be considering making some kind of acquisition (whether a pitcher or an everyday player) prior to the trading deadline?

I've always respected the Cardinals but that respect has been sorely tested of late with the arrogance of some Cardinal fans and the cheating scandal. Thanks for your classy post which restores some of my faith in Cardinal fans.
