This weeks W - Iowa Edition (edited)

The fact that Turk and Chief are 2 of the more reasonable guys on HR (and they are) speaks volumes about that place. The facts change constantly and the goal posts are moved.
1. Iowa is the best now and we don't care about ancient history like Okie State
2. PSU is better now, but only ancient history matters.
3. Gable didn't need any top recruits to win. Top recruits don't matter.
4. Brands can't win because he doesn't get top recruits. Nobody could.
5. We won't wrestle at UNI because they are a small program.
6. We will go wrestle in Montana to help small programs.
7. Mark Perry is a dick-glad he's gone.
8. Mark has come home to save us- we always loved him.
9. Top recruits come ready made to win at will in college.
10. Spencer Lee will benefit from the best lightweight room in the country.
11. Next year.
12. Next year
13. Next year- whoops I guess that one is consistent. Some of the group has started saying "2 years from now instead of next year" That started about 4 years ago. Well?

Lets get it on!

WT make sure you got that special ointment for your thin skin this week.

WT: Im going to stop at the Creamery and have a cone in your honor! Im sorry for the above post, it wasnt warranted and was cheap.

There won’t be any let down. The team knew what they could do. They knew Kuhn would battle. They knew AC would be right there. They see it every day. It was the fans whose eyes were opened.....along with the rest of the wrestling world.

Who gets a team ready to go better than our staff.........nobody.

It reminds me of the pre- Maryland match NLWC social session with Casey last year. Casey said that some people say it's only because Penn State gets studs that they are so successful. He replied that it's true PSU gets a lot of studs, but to trust him, there is a lot more to it if you want to win championships - the staff has a very detailed and thorough approach to make sure the wrestlers get the best out of themselves. Still makes sense to me.

Nothing about Brands being unable to win anything except one share of a B1G title without Dan Gable on staff either officially as an "assistant" or as a "special assistant to the AD"?

i just watched Bo Nickal gas against Gravina. It happens to even the best of them.

If you have followed college wrestling long enough you may remember Joey Slaton from Iowa. He literally just laid on the mat completely gassed against ISU during a dual meet. Everyone was screaming at the returning national finalist to to get up but had no energy to move. Almost felt sorry for him. Can't imagine how he felt that day. Some guy named Dan Dennis took over at 133 after that... Point is it can happen to anyone. Nutrition, what you ate that day, sickness, poor training, coming back from an injury..
Something tells me Spencer will come around again.

I have a feeling Spencer gases because he has spent his career never having to battle it out on the mat. He has dominated everyone his entire life and now he has to wrestle for 7 minutes. This is not unique to Spencer, a lot of guys have had to adjust to college.

The reality is that some guys adjust and can go a full 7 no problem and other guys, no matter how dominant they were in high school, can go a full 7 minutes. Look at Andrew Alton. He dominated everybody in high school and had major issues in college going a full 7. Who would have thought that?

Spencer has been gassing in the third period, and if I were an Iowa fan I'd be worried about it. You honestly don't know whether this is something he will ever get under control because he's never had to battle for 7 minutes like this before college.

You forgot

14. Cael Sanderson is a slimeball. I can't believe he's taking Andrew Long. The kid has been in trouble at ISU. Cael is a win at all costs guy. Brands would never do something like this to win.
15. Every kid should get a second chance and I'm glad PDIII is going to be a Hawkeye. This shows you that the Brands Bros care about people and they are willing to give this guy a second (4th) chance.

Each team has had the height of glory while being coached by a great former Cyclone. Each team made the decision to gamble on a questionable character who was kicked off of the ISU team. Cael's gamble lead to an NCAA team title- Brand's gamble lead to nothing- kind of sums up the results in general the past several years.

There's a lot of good posters over there. Angrede (the person who gave us wrestlestat must always be cited when talking about good Hawk fans), 1stplacehawk, John, Tarp, Valholl, Lax, Lumbee just to a name a few.....

Andegre's wrestlestat is my most used resource these days, and he is always reasonable. It is just really hard to read HR in general anymore so I have pretty much stopped going there. Mostly just for Vallholl stuff. He gives out lots of good info that saves me a lot of time on weekends and he sticks to wrestling. Other than that, not worth it for me.

WT is good here when talking about wrestling or poking fun in a normal way. Quick wit and I enjoy that. I have no problem being made fun of if it is reasonable. However, recently he is regularly beating some of the same dead horses over and over that we hear on HR and that gets boring, and is what made people notice.

I think it gets hard not to join in with all the posters there hammering nonsense all the time when you are rooting for the same team. Especially if you hit the Vodka first.....;)

I feel bad for the ones that truly seem to hate and have such bitterness, so I can't get angry at them. Ignore works. I don't ignore the poster, just the post when it doesn't make sense.

On another note....How bout them Eagles! :D

Meh...

Same characters spewing the same stuff, many for years. Guess I'm more forgiving than most, as I wade through all the crap looking for nuggets (used to be much more than "nuggets", and that's a shame) of decent, solid, wrestling talk on HR...I'm able to ignore all the nonsense. Each person's posts speak volumes about their character, who am I to argue with what everyone else sees.

I have been to NCAA's and Big Ten's often, including many times staying in the same hotels as Iowa fans. Anecdotally-speaking, with the exception of a drunk teenager, every conversation with every Iowa fan I encountered has been respectful...and all had high regards for our wrestlers and coaches.

Never let a few loose cannons define a fan base, there's far more turk's and chief's out there than the immature few we read on HR.

15. Wrestling match held in the AM to make way for the Ladies Hoops match.
16. Mark Hall is a bust (after losing at Iowa)
17. Mark Hall got upset last year also (after Spencer got upset art Midlands).

The OP (dunkej as usual with Iowa threads) starts this thread adressing me right off the bat. I respond playing along with the banter like i always do, and i got guys calling me a troll, comparing me to Vodka:rolleyes:, putting me on ignore etc.. who has the thin skin? I promise after Iowa gets beat by the funtastic five i will still be here to congratulate you just like i did in previous years. At the end of the day i will still cheer on my Hawkeyes like i have for 33 years. I will never jump on your bandwagon like JP whithers the third or Ban Basketball among many others. Im all Hawkeye forever and always! You just have to accept me for who i am!:D

Not weak. Just truth
Speaking of top recruits who didn't pan out perfectly .... so, what DID you guys do to Mike Evans anyway? Evans was very exciting here in D3 when he wrestled at Cumberland Valley. He was one of the most high-flying wrestlers ever around these parts. Then he goes to Blair, then to Iowa, and suddenly looked not just ornery and unhappy but unexciting and frequently bored. Sure, he won some matches, but he also had his fair share of Nyquil matches...

Lee gassed against Piccinnini, but I didnt think he gassed at all against Nato

I dont think his tank will be an issue. I do think his bigger issue will be getting a takedown against NS or Nato, If he can do that, he can beat them both from the top position

I am not a Vodka (spirit) fan, much prefer Bourbon!!!

BTW, Vodka (forum poster) seems to be a little scarce recently. If I say his name a third time will he pop up like Bettlejuice?

Big Bourbon and Scotch fan. Try Widow Jane Bourbon, had it at the Strip House in NYC between rounds at Nationals.

I got that impression watching Snyder the other night. He has wrestled so few college matches this year while focusing on freestyle that he isn't really prepared to go 7 hard minutes with the larger heavyweights.
It's only due to his extraordinary physical skills that he could even function at the end of that match and makes me curious to see how it will go with Coon this weekend.

agree.

I just set my DVR to this.... I think Iowa pulls off one upset. Earlier on this thread I saw the "Cael only gets top recruits" argument. It is "sort of true" in that top recruits tend to fill out his lineup, and top recruits want to go to him. Its not like he is begging for scraps at any weight.

It's also not a knock. He creates an environment where guys whose attitude is "wow, I get to do this every day?" can thrive. Cassar is a great example. Not an elite recruit but certainly was developed.

Brands on the other hand creates an environment where guys whose attitude is "wow, I have to do this every day?" can thrive. Mitch Bowman is a great example. Not an elite recruit, but certainly developed.

College is about recruiting. Its easy for Cael to recruit elite guys because he promises to make it fun. Brands recruits the "next best" because he promises to make them work (not a bad thing. Some guys don't look at practice as fun. They look at it as work). Again, one isn't right or wrong. Why the knocks?

The match was on the line vs PSU. He won't wrestle with the same sense of urgency, and be nearly as spent as he was Saturday night. Coon is a mountain of a man, so it'll be close, though I believe it'll be a controlled 3-5 point victory, or so for Snyder.

As if Snyder hasn't beaten enough goliaths in the past couple years to prove otherwise -- including Coon. And doesn't wrestle Dlagnev every day in the room.

Saturday's match was an outlier for him. He very obviously tried to do too much, because the team needed more than his 10-pt win last year. He almost Rachaled himself, and when was the last time Snyder even attempted a throw?

He’ll be ok....unless he tries to lift him like he did Nevills. That was his big mistake.
