To nat duals or not to nat duals...V13.69

I feel like I need a translation for those of us who don't follow all the wrestling media personality drama.

Is the issue that FLO has now started a collegiate dual event to compete with the one rokfin does?
In short yes.
@smalls103 can go into detail.

Any guesses on who Iowa wont wrestle?
Iowa is supposed to travel to State College this year. Cael isn't going to wrestle Iowa at the duals either. If this was a non PSU v Iowa year, meeting up at a national duals tournament similar to last year's would be perfect.

In the interview below, Dresser had a few comments you might appreciate.

He said that ISU will be at the duals in New Orleans. Also listed PSU, UNC, NC State, and Cornell as other teams.

Also said that they are working on getting PSU on future schedule for a 1 & 1.

I always thought us not having the clones on the schedule was odd. But I get the butt hurt they suffered since the world shook.

NO duals is interesting and Im glad PSU is doing these things to push the sport and give us fans something to look forward too.

NC state is another I wish we had a relationship with as an annual dual. I like the Popps and their push forward of the sport.

Dresser says the NO duals are the weekend b4 christmas???

Anyone with knowledge of NO in the winter or general? Just checked flights from BWI and they are $120-140ish.

We got covid at Christmas last year and it ended our winter vacation plans, so this might be something I look into if we dont try to go back to Fla. I dont think Tulsa is in the cards with our spring sports schedule, but Ive always wanted to go to NO and my kids arent ready for Mardi Gras, so this may kill a few birds with one shot.

Selfishly, I would love that. Or with UNC.

Been to New Orleans a bunch of times at New Years. It's not as crazy as Mardi Gras, what is?, but the Quarter is still full due to the Sugar Bowl. It's a good time to go there, though it does come with the challenges of popular places (crowds, full restaurants, pickpockets, street scammers, etc.).

IMO New Orleans is better done as an adults trip. A lot of the reasons you go there are off limits to kids (Bourbon St bars) or will get old fast (Garden District mansion walking tour). And will the kids allow the dining experience?

If you take the kids, the aquarium is great, and I'd see if there is a kids tour of the Quarter. Voodoo stuff might be fun for them, or maybe they'll find it hokey. Only do cemetery tours during daylight and on an organized group tour -- perfectly OK that way but not safe at night or by yourself. I'd be wary of the swamp tours, unless you want to spend the better part of the day with mosquitoes big enough to swallow cats whole.

If you go with the kids, don't stay in or too close to the Quarter. The bars don't close until 4 am (if then) -- some don't even open until after midnight. If you're staying in the Quarter, you'll hear it all night. If you're near the Quarter, your drunk neighbors will slam the doors at 4:30 am. Financial District is probably OK, though you'll want to Uber at night unless there's a crowd to follow.

The general rule of walking around New Orleans: when the crowd stops, you stop.

Weather wise, it could be in the high 30s or in the high 70s.

Should've added: I've both flown into and driven into New Orleans. Fly if possible -- and with gas prices what they are, flying might be cheaper. It's certainly far easier, both in arriving and in not dealing with a car in that city.

I have been to NO quite a few times for conventions, they say the World War Two museum is nice, though I have never been there.

Its Mardi Gras 365 days a year there

Can confirm, really nice museum.
The building of the museum was really pushed hard by author Stephen Ambrose who sadly passed before it’s completion. His son Hugh (also an author “War in the Pacific”), was influential in seeing his fathers dream come to fruition. Sadly Hugh has since passed as well.

I can't go in to details yet, but let's just say you should look into accommodations ;)
Since this wasn't posted earlier:

That's not a bad time to go crowd-wise. Christmas Week isn't nearly the busiest. Should be easier to get into any sights, restaurants, and bars.

Pre-event social should be at Pat O'Brien's piano bar. You're welcome.

The wife and I have gone down to New Orleans a few times for Jazz Fest, and took our at the time 1 year old twins the last time. Pushing the stroller down bourbon and getting beers to go still allowed us to have a good time and not have to go inside any bars with kids.

There is still plenty to do for the kids even though it is more or less a party town. We haven’t done Mardi Gras World yet, but that would be fun. It’s a giant warehouse where you can see some of the floats that were used in past parades. Lots of tours to do, cemetery tour, ghost tour, voodoo tour, and swamp tour. Even taking the twins, we still had a great time, granted they were too young to run all over the place at that point in time.
