To shirt or not

As I learned from Doug Schwab's brother, former AA at UNI, "the future is now!"

He singlehandedly changed my tune on the belief that all freshman should redshirt. Then, with the success of many redshirt freshman that I've seen, heck yeah, if they're ready, the future is now! Why wait for injuries, etc. to stop them?

As a former D2 coach, I look st things s but differently. A lot of kids that end up at d2 (or the other lower divisions)are there because they are missing a key ingredient to be successful at the upper levels. It could be grades, work ethic, talent, or character . Most lowers level programs get the left overs after D1s do their thing. This is why many lower level kids don’t commit till late in their senior season ( they are convinced they will be getting the D1 call)

That being said, in many cases the risky athlete might not be around after their freshmen season. So the coach needs to make hay while the sun shines. If they can start and be successful as a true freshmen put them on the mat.
