Last season, Virginia competed in 22, yes 22, duals going 12-10 (1-4 in the ACC) as they attended the Journeyman, South Beach and Virginia Duals. Their biggest wins came against Arizona State, Lock Haven and Utah Valley. Virginia didn't wrestle against Rutgers. In addition to the duals, the Cavaliers went to Cliff Keen, placing 16th. Virginia finished dead last (6th) at the ACC Championship but still qualified four wrestlers to the NCAAs. Almost completely on the strength of Jack Mueller's runner up finish, Virginia finished 23rd (20.5 points) at the NCAA Championship.

Virginia has a lighter dual schedule this season. In addition to their 5 ACC duals, the Cavaliers matchup with Southern Virginia, Maryland, ASU, LIU Post, Chattanooga and VMI. They will also be again be at the Virginia Duals. For tournaments, the Keystone Classic, Cliff Keen and Midlands are on their slate. Virginia should see improvement this year with Courtney and Love back from injury and Hayes settling in at 133.

Mueller burned his redshirt last December to replace Louie Hayes at 125 who moved up to take over 133 after Brian Courtney’s injury. He didn’t really face top competition until the NCAA championship where he had big wins against 4 seed Ronnie Bresser (Ore St) and 1 seed Sebastian Rivera (NW). <Bonus: 77.3%, RPI: .676>

Louie Hayes (Jr) <Carl Sandburg, IL>

Hayes was 7-2 at 125 with a couple of wins against NCAA qualifiers before moving up to 133. At 133, Hayes went 11-11 and was unable to qualify for the NCAAs, going 0-2 at the ACC Championship. <Bonus: 41.9%, RPI: .567>

I have a question:

If PSU schedule is always limited to 16-or-so “competition dates” (I’m paraphrasing what Roar says), then how can VT schedule 22 duals ?

Or ... are some of those dates a round robin of duals where they’ll wrestle 3-4 other teams ?

(Maybe I answered my own question).
