Weekly Fleming/Shorter Post

Hate to throw gas on fire. But, Franklin really. And, I mean really wanted Fleming. Pretty butthurt Fleming went to OSU. I have an impeccable source. Not Jim Roth.
Who told me Franklin texted him so often after Fleming made his decision. Julian had to ask him to stop contacting him.

Fleming’s age and caliber of competition made me question his 5 star status. He did. Do well at all those camps.

He was far from the type of 5 star recruit that really hurt PSU in missing out. Recent ones like Bryan Bresee, Christian Wilkins to Clemson, Justin Fields to Georgia (4-5 star), Zach Harrison to Ohio State, etc.. hurt way more than losing Fleming. He was a PA kid so that’s why CJF went overboard trying to reel him in and perhaps change the perception that top kids from SOUTHERN COLUMBIA HS won’t come to Penn State. That was a mistake by Franklin IMO and one he likely has learned from going forward.

Agree. I was more surprised than
annoyed that he didn’t come to the good guys. With the portal, not many can’t miss guys. If you’re girl starts acting up, you just take her friend😉

Penn State football should always have a 5 deep of great players at every position in recruiting. We are a great and historic program and fan base. You cannot fall in love w an 18 YO when recruiting.

or a 20 YO w Fleming … LOL

Shorter outgrew the WR position while at PSU. He had good straight line speed, but he did not have the lateral mobility or the ability to fight for catches to be an effective WR. I recall he was 235 at one point and I believe JF indicated he could have gotten to 250. He is certainly not the only WR at PSU to experience this.
He needed to move to TE, like Troy Drayton once did. Also note Juwan Johnson’s newfound NFL success doing this.

When you ballon to 250 lbs there’s a reason. It’s called poor work ethic. Seems like the kind of kid that blames everyone around him for his short comings. Typical “it’s not my fault” kid.

Ballooned to 250? If anything he put too much muscle on in out weight room.

A little Rapper’s Delight reference…well played.

In the same class,

Parker Washington 8 catches 49 yards
KeAndre Lambert Smith 4 catches 27 yards

And being behind Olave isn't an excuse since They are behind Dotson.

Jesus, once again Shorter has completely outplayed my expectations. Didn't think he had it in him. To, you know, catch a ball.
Actually, Fleming had the one catch for seven yards. Shorter is what you thought he is with zero catches for zero yards.

He didn’t look like that at PSU. Franklin commented on his weight at one point. Florida strength and conditioning coach is doing him a huge disservice by allowing him to put on that much muscle. How much quickness was lost by 25/30 lbs of muscle mass?

As detailed in earlier posts in other threads on this site, I attended my first Southern Columbia game (my alma mater) in exactly 50 years. I had a reunion of sorts with some of my teammates and had an opportunity to get some information on Julian.....even spotted Grandpa Mick at the game....so I doubt he was in Columbus on Sat.
This is a summary of what i heard or how I interpreted the conversations.
Early on Julian had a girlfriend attending PSU (most of us knew this) he visited her frequently and no doubt took advantage of his celebrity (as a top prospect), as a HS soph or junior......which one of us would not have done the same?
It appears that PSU was never the front runner and I posted here at the end of his junior year that the word out of Catawissa was the he was going "away" from home. At the time I thought Clemson was the front runner.
The biggest factor in his decision was his relationship with Brian Hartline.
Everyone seems to acknowledge that his statements about coaching changes, Shorter and his experience at PSU were a very distant second to his trust in Hartline.
PSU didn't lose Fleming. They were never the front runner.
Shorter on the other hand, under performed and quit on this teammates mid season. I would have not ill feelings for him if he had waited until after the bowl game.
the reality is folks, that PSU is just fine without them. I don't care if they combine for 100 catches from here on out. Our receivers are just fine. There are just a few individuals who post here who will covet any player who leaves and will never miss an opportunity to assert that CJF somehow used poor judgement, lost a recruit, didn't give a player a chance.....call it what you will.
Buy the way....on another note....#23 Garcia is a pretty damn good RB for SCA. I think he gained 221 yards in the second half vs Wyoming Area. I believe he plans to go to Kent State. Got a soft spot for #23 in black and gold....

Personally, I don't necessarily see it as a failure for Franklin, but just the frustration of ALWAYS, well, almost always, losing the top player in Pennsylvania year after year. That doesn't really happen to Ohio State for instance. Its just frustrating, but it goes back years.

Uh???? Where's Bragalone on those lists?

Some people don’t like pennsylticky like we do…. Minorities especially. Central PA isn’t exactly a destination region that people want to come to. For example, some people would rather go to the beach or to France than the Pocono mountains. I personally can’t stand the beach or that French bullshit and that’s probably a big part of why I love PSU.

For that reason (and our facilities 😭) we will never have the level of recruiting success that our alumni want. On the bright side, state college is pretty sweet and a lot of players do want to be there.

Did anyone notice Michael Carmody at left tackle for Notre Lame yesterday. I think he was benched in the second quarter and looked really overmatched on some plays.
