What do we root for?

Being a fan I don't care about the one game at a time philosophy and as much as people are debbie downers after the past 5 years this is exciting for the fanbase...So looking at the situation with the CFP rankings and the state of the PAC 12 and BIG 12, does the BIG or SEC get two teams in the playoffs? If so, do we root for Michigan to lose twice, giving PSU a shot at the title game or do you root for Michigan to win out and hope PSU can sneak into the top 4 finishing 10-2 as other teams ahead of us lose?

Just root for us to win--if we don't do that the rest doesn't matter

Penn State will not get in as a second big ten team. The only way is for PSU to win B10, which will require two UM losses.

I admire your optimism but there's no way we'll finish in the top four.

Actually, there is a way we finish in the top 4, albeit unlikely. If PSU wins out and Michigan loses 2 (lets say Iowa and OSU), we go to the Big 10 championship game. If PSU wins that game, they are in the playoff.

I can guarantee the Big 10 champion is going to the final four, even if they (PSU) have 2 losses. The SEC champion is also going to the final 4 as is the ACC champion (assuming it is Clemson).

That leaves one open spot for the winner of the PAC 12, Big 12, or a one loss non-conference champion.

There is no way they will put in a one loss, non conference champion instead of a conference champion from the Big 10 or SEC, or ACC (assuming Clemson).

Is it possible, yes? Is it likely, no because I don't think PSU finishes without a loss nor do I think Michigan loses two.

I realize that but a win out and a NY6 bowl game...Orange or Rose would be awesome.

Ive been trying to figure this out so this appears to be a good place to ask it. What needs to happen for us to get into the orange bowl?

Root for PSU to win the next 2 games. If that happens, the worst we can do will be the Rose Bowl regardless of what happens with OSU/Michigan.

Sorry, that is just wrong.
PSU winning B10 title means PSU is in final 4.
I agree with Clarkston. I don't see how they can keep the big ten champ out even with two losses. Especially us since we beat OSU. Either way it's not going to be easy for sure especially with our line in shambles.

If we're assuming PSU beats Rutgers and MSU.....

The committee sets the matchups so it would still depend on too many variables.

Surest way to Orange would probably be for OSU to lose to Michigan, stay ranked ahead of PSU..... and Rose takes OSU over PSU. I doubt that happens given OSU's more recent visit to Pasadena.

I'm not sure given potential outcomes and ranking impact including the B1G title game that there's another realistic scenario for PSU to play in Orange. Making the B1G title game and losing would probably drop us from the NY6 altogether.

Maybe you're right, but there will most likely be some discussion on how competitive the playoff games would be. Best case, we'd be #4 and playing Alabama. If the selectors think another two-loss team would give UA a better game, that might sway them.

I doubt that happens given OSU's more recent visit to Pasadena.

I respectfully disagree on that reasoning. The "more recent" tie-breaker is pretty far down on the list. More likely, if PSU is chosen over OSU, it's because we beat them head-to-head (the top tie-breaker).

You may be right and I think my point was it would be hard to imagine OSU getting taken by Rose over PSU if (as far as the scenario discussed is concerned) they're neck and neck in the final poll poll.

"If Penn State wins out, Ohio State can't win the Big Ten East. But if Michigan wins out, the Wolverines claim the division title."

So, in the B1G, we need PSU to in out and tOSU to beat scUM.
PSU will then probably play Wisky in Indy.

If OSU beats Michigan and PSU wins out, PSU goes to the Big Ten championship. If PSU plays and beats Wisconsin in that game, the playoff committee will have a hard time keeping PSU out of the playoff. That's the scenario I'm hoping for.
