What has Allar done to be the undoubted starter?

True, he had an overall good season for a first year starter. The problem this year was really when he met the big 2. In those games he was-

1. OSU-
-18/42 (43%), 191 yards, 1 TD, 0 int
-QB rating 30.1

2. Michigan-
-10/22 (45%), 70 yards, 1 TD , 0 int
- QB rating 63.6
Yep. If memory serves, the number two and three defenses in college football

We've seen Pribula before, in the form of Tommy Stevens and Will Levis. You could even say in Michael Robinson and Rashard Casey. Only one, Robinson, of those 5 had great success with PSU when given the opportunity.
Pribula looks like a decent player but the dude is 11 for 21 in his career. Just because you can blast off the tackle for 12 in the fourth quarter of a blowout against a tired and weak opposition, doesn't mean you'll be a good QB.
Perspective matters.
I think the OP is looking for the next coming of Trace McSorley. I loved Trace. In fact he is one of my favorite players in the Franklin era. Unfortunately a quarterback of that style is not going to win a natty. A run first qb will be knocked out of the game by a Georgia or Bama defense.

Which good team did we beat?
We beat a lot of teams that we wouldn’t have beaten with a bad QB. So you’re saying he had a bad season because he didn’t pull an upset….pretty crappy way to judge a QB. I guess that means that pretty much all the QB’s were bad.

Right...and? The B1G has quality defenses. I would hope moving forward a 5 star QB will play demonstrably better vs the top opponents on the schedule. I mean, isn't that the best way to evaluate a QBs success? This was his first yr starting, so he was going to have struggles. But, I would venture to guess nobody expected him to not even hit 50% comp pct vs the top 2 on the schedule...he was flat out bad.

Maybe. We don’t know.

What was the play call? What was the progression? Did they all make the right reads? Did the QB make the right pre snap reads? Did the receivers run accurate routs? Man or zone? Tight or loose? 1 2 or 3 deep zone? Did everyone get the same play? Injuries? So much more.

Tons of that has nothing to do with the QB Typically you need several film reviews.

I mean...I guess. But, two games worth of really disjointed and average QB play says that it is a combo of what u referred - scheme, players on the same page, etc. However, u cant dismiss how Drew was not ready for those moments and was just not good enough. I was at the OSU game, and his pocket presence and overall footwork looked poor.

I do dismiss it. It is a team sport, not our QB against their. Plus, the OC was fired as a result. That tells me that the HC blamed the lack of production on the OC , including a huge drop off of rushing production.

When everyone sucks, it is institutional not one person. Having said that, he needs to improve and I expect him to. He’s only 19 years old

Yes it is a team sport...but shouldn't some onus or more responsibility be placed on those with the ball? If Singleton fumbles 4 times inside our 10 yd line, I would think he should get more blame than simply 'its a team sport and blame should go all around.' Not trying to be snarky, but Allar's performance at a high profile and crucial position should be evaluated and critiqued harder than the ILB position. With that being said, I agree with u on him being 19 at the time and will hopefully progress next yr. And, more to your point about being institutional when everyone stinks in these big games, that speaks to a larger JF issue.

Yes. Agreed. But QB is do complex I am not sure how a fan can judge it. I get certain QBs struggle with arm strength and complexity or progressions. Should Allar start over Beau? I have no idea.

Like who? Iowa who we shut out?

Well, I assume that after observing him in two years of spring and preseason practice the coaches identified Drew as the QB that gave the team the best chance of winning. I have to think that the QB coach, OC and Head Coach are better suited to make that decision than message board posters.

We now have a new AC, let’s wait and see who masters the offense and let the coaches make their evaluation. I will be surprised if they don’t make the same decision.

There are several other people on this forum who utilize “pretty crappy way(s)” to judge a quarterback.

But those coaches can’t match the coaching genius that exists on this board.

It seems each place I check has a slightly different defensive ranking with Penn St, Michigan, and Ohio State all alternating in the top 3.

Just for comparison- Allar vs the other 2 QBs in their respective games-

1. Ohio St (McCord)-
-22/35 (63%), 286 yards, 1 TD, 0 int
-QB rating 83.0

1. Allar (OSU game)-
-18/42 (43%), 191 yards, 1 TD, 0 int
-QB rating 30.1

2. Michigan (McCarthy)-
-7/8 (88%), 60 yards, 0 TD, 0 int
-QB rating 95.6

2. Allar (Michigan game)-
-10/22 (45%), 70 yards, 1 TD , 0 int
- QB rating 63.6

FWIW I looked at the QB ratings that ESPN puts out for some kind of gauge how our QBs have performed. It may also be a good judge how well they have performed as compared to other QBs.

2023 Allar is rated with a 72.7 and a #27 nationally and #4 in the Big Ten
2022 Clifford is rated with a 71.4 and a #31 nationally and #4 in the Big Ten
2021 Clifford is rated with a 66.2 and a #45 nationally and #7 in the Big Ten
2020 Clifford is rated with a 69.1 and a #37 nationally and #6 in the Big Ten
2019 Clifford is rated with a 76.8 and a #17 nationally and #5 in the Big Ten
2018 McSorley is rated with a 64.8 and a #49 nationally and #6 in the Big Ten
2017 McSorley is rated with a 81.5 and a #9 nationally and #2 in the Big Ten
2016 McSorley is rated with a 73.7 and a #27 nationally and #2 in the Big Ten
2015 Hackenburg is rated with a 49.5 and a #92 nationally and #12 in the Big Ten
2014 Hackenburg is rated with a 37.3 and a #113 nationally and #13 in the Big Ten
2013 Hackenburg is rated with a 58.3 and a #71 nationally and #10 in the Big Ten

The problem is that some years had good receivers and some years had good OCs. Last year people were all kinds of optimistic that Yurcich was the answer.

As the season went on that wasn't surprising given how inept the receiving core was. He was bad but ignoring the circumstances isn't logical

Sez Trolly McTroller. I’m a diehard Penn State fan but Drew Allar is bad, Trace McSorely was nothing special, all the teams “we” beat are lousy. Joe Paterno should have done more… on and on, with the exact opposite take on nearly every topic a real Penn State fan would take. You are such a poser!

He was bad in those games but should remain the starter. If you can't acknowledge when your players aren't getting it done that makes everything you say moot. Kind of like you discussing Lamar.

“Posers can be found in various settings, whether they’re pretending to like a certain thing or faking a whole suite of skills. In every case, a poser pretends to be something or someone that he isn’t, usually to get attention. You can often identify posers from the way they act, dress or talk. Some posers will put their efforts towards developing a fake social media personality, and seeing through this can be a bit trickier. Posers will try hard to show they're part of a community. Posers love to talk about these things more than do them. In contrast, someone who’s truly passionate about a hobby, a skill or a specific community usually lets their passion do the talking. Someone who’s thoroughly passionate about something will talk about it at length if asked, whereas a poser will shove it in just about anyone’s face.”

I rest my case.

Most others we gimme’s.

How many times have we won 10 games a season since 2000?

We haven't been a top 4 team under Franklin yet, but I think some take for granted the 10 win years as if it just going to happen regardless.

To be fair, his sphincter tightened immensely on the only two games that counted. Most others we gimme’s.
Who talks like that? I’ve noticed that these geniuses like Below Average Loser and Trolly McTroller can’t even string two coherent sentences together. “Most others we gimme’s.” You dum. And you’re laughingly trying to criticize an elite athlete with that literary masterpiece. Tres impressive!

To be fair, did you really think we were going to lose any of those games? Before or even during the game?
10 wins is still impressive because we didn't flop against anyone but all those games should have been wins.

I think that speaks for what level Franklin has us at if we believe all 10 of those games should be wins.

Give it up, Lando. You’ve been exposed as the troll that you are. But you couldn't troll your own mother on the trollingest day of your life if you had an electrified trolling machine. What a dope.

Won 10 games as a first year starter. Doing so again in 2024 would earn us a playoff spot!
A 10 win regular season in 2024 would be better than the 10 win regular season in 2023, considering that we have to play at WVU, USC and Wisconsin, and have what should be difficult home games against an OSU team that definitely will be in the preseason top 5, Washington and UCLA. For PSU to get 10 wins against that schedule, the qb is going to have to improve greatly both in his physical and, maybe more importantly, mental peformances. I hope that he can do it, but I don't believe that it is a sure thing. My hope is that his hopefully vastly improved coaching greatly aids in his advancement.

Agreed. Greatest improvement is typically between first and second year…. Plus the new coach. Again, Allar is only 19 years old. The QB he replaced was 23 or 24 yrs before last. That is quite a difference. But as you say, there are no guarantees.

Need improvement at WR as well.

Exactly. What were Kerry Collins’ and Todd Blackledge’s stats as a soph? Some of you people are real dopes. The second team quarterback was a Goldilocks. Used just right.

It is a different game from Collins and Blackledge's days.

I don't put all the blame on Allar, but he does seem slow with his reads. That may improve in time. Or it may not. Some QBs never become great at reading defenses as plays unfold. Having a super strong arm is only part of the equation.

Penn State's inability to stretch the field with ANY sort of deep threat really limits the offense. That is on failing to obtain quality receivers, the offensive line, and Allar.
