What is the absolute WORST beer you've ever tasted?

When I move to Ohio in 1978, they still had "3.2 beer"--for folks between 18-21. But, sadly, it was the only beer you could get on tap in Columbus in those days. But boy was it awful.

I also recall a "Best and Worst of Philly" in Philadelphia Magazine back in the early 1980s. Worst Local Beer: Schmidts. Best Local Beer: Prior Double Dark. The comment? "They're both made in the same brewery. You figure it out!"

Yuengling Light.
Some days Rolling Rock in the skeller was nasty too. I wonder if the skeller sometimes got nasty crap that was old
Skunked Heineken - seems like this was always skunked

Did anyone ever drink generic beer in the 70's or 80's? Never did (befoe my time), but I imagine it wasn't great.

Yes, whatever beer you've tried that made you absolutely say: YUCK! I know somebody's worst beer might be somebody's best beer but your taste buds are your taste buds so,...........................

I'll start it off.

My absolutely WORST beer of all time is or was called Pearl.

I think it is made it Texas. It was absolutely horrible!

Others that could have made the list include:

1. Tech
2. Schmidt's
3. Carling Black Label
4. Schaefer
5. Bud Light
6. Kohler

Now it's your turn.

Let's have some fun with this. Don't criticize others.

Their taste buds deserve to be heard!
I've had and disliked all of the beers on your list. I nominate the following:
Reading Premium
Valley Forge
Piels (I hated that stuff.)
Red White & Blue

I forgot one: Olde English 800 - horrid.

Great topic - For context, I "got by" on Schaefer 16 oz. 6 Packs (because they were $1.85 at the bottle shop and I could "stand" it). Given that, even at the time, I found these to be putrid:
Black Label, Meister Brau, "Fake" Lowenbrau made by Miller (same as Meister Brau), Blatz and Hamm's.
I like how the bottle shop stacked the cooler from most to least expensive. We would go to the end and get whatever was there ... typically Piels pounders for $1.85 a six pack. However the worst beer I ever had would either be GCA or Black Label.

I'll go a different route with this. Hamm, Schaefer, Schlitz, etc were terrible but everyone knew they were terrible. But one of the worst beers for me is one that a lot of people believe is a cut above -- Heineken. Holland should not be proud of this beer.

Anyone in the Limerick area ever get a case from the (short-lived) Dirty Dawg brewery. They supposedly had an issue with quality control and I must have purchased their worst batch ever. It literally tasted like water straight from the Schuylkill River downstream of the nuke plant. The one (and only) time I ever poured out multiple beers!

While there are numerous excellent candidates previously listed, and I believe that Tech is right up there near the top (or bottom), you have failed to mention two of the worst beers ever produced. Unless you were from Altoona or the surrounding area, you probably (luckily) never had the privilege of drinking Curve Beer from the Altoona Brewing Company. It was awful, but even more surprising was that Altoona Brewing made a cheaper version called Pop's Brau, and it was truly indescribable. I can state this as absolute fact, because after graduating from PSU, I temporarily worked in a dive bar outside the railroad shops, and it had Pop's Brau on tap! I would confidently put those 2 beers up against any beer already mentioned!!!

I just looked up Pop's Brau and it had 3 reviews with zero stars. Sounds pretty tasty.

1. Lions Head, though I only had it once and maybe it was in the can too long.
2. Almost any light beer, the favorite of people who don't want to admit they hate beer.

Some years back I was in Altoona at the big distributor there, The Brew Zoo. Good specials. So I picked up a few cases and wanted to try something new and I see this stuff called Gluek. It's out of the upper midwest somewhere, I forget exactly. It was dirt cheap. I asked the kid if it was any good and he said "Ahm, it's not one of our best sellers."

Should have taken his word for it. I think it was Gluek Golden Light or something along that line. The best way to describe it was that it tasted like if you rinsed a glass that used to have beer in it and drank the rinse water. That was Gluek. I researched it on line and found it's prounounced 'Glick' as in "Sick." There are some funny stories about it if you're bored and want to hunt around for them. It's easily the worst beer I ever had and that's not even close. It makes Steggy and the other stuff mentioned here look like Dom Perignon.

That is very funny.

They made it into Bill Bryson's PA breweries guide version 1.0. I bought the book, drove out to see them and they had already switched over to making sodas. A few months later, they were out of business.

I'd say they have issues!

I bought this chili beer in Arizona. Don't remember the brand. It didn't have a slight chili flavor. The chili was really strong. Each bottle had a little chili pepper in it. I like almost any kind of beer and there is nothing better then a cold beer on a hot day but not this stuff. Tried drinking this stuff after being outside on a hot Arizona summer day but it didn't cool you off. It only made you hotter. Undrinkable. I threw it out.

They still make it, and it still sucks: http://www.chilibeer.com/chilibeer/Home.html

For my money, the worst beer still remains Budweiser. Its technically barely even a beer considering the amount of flaked corn and rice it contains. Since I prefer my beer to taste like barley, and not fermented corn, I think Bud is the worst example of "beer" in the world.

Best to warm it up and serve it in Japanese restaurants.

Agree. Horrible, horrible brew. Some have killed over it though:

They also had a tag line: "Oh my gosh.....It's Frothingslosh!" This was Iron City that didn't pass the QA inspection (just like Tech, Old German, etc.).
Didn't Old Froth also have a ditty "Hippity Hops makes it tops", or was that some other swill that sold for a buck a six pack?

Ed's Original Cave Creek Chili Beer...I still have a bottle. Made in Evansville, In, LOL!

Pretty sure that the generic beer from the late 70's early 80's was made by Pearl.

My worst list includes:

Iron City
Iron City Light
Lone Star

I can do Bud out of a bottle, but can or draft it's pretty much undrinkable.

Genesee Cream Ale is definitely up there, but I dislike Honey Brown much more. Probably because everybody I knew drank it in the 90's and I couldn't stand it.

And I just looked it up it's made by Genesee. Nice job upstate NY...

National Bohemian back in the 80's. Returnable 16 oz bottles - never failed that at least 4-5 bottles (per case) had chips in the top and were skunky. What memories....

Had a friend who collect beer cans - He would visit me in New Orleans and he would buy beer from the local grocery stores the generic brands - A&P beer and Schwegman's beer. He didn't drink so he wanted us to drink it all just had to open the cans from the bottom. Rot gut beer but free.

I concur with most of what's been said here, but I have yet to see Southpaw, or Steel Reserve listed. Corona is pretty awful, too (by the way, how does an already light beer have a lite version?).

Haberno Scalpin by Ballast Point Brewing Co. Horrific idea to dump hot pepper into beer. That could only sound like a good idea to a couple of drunk guys ... maybe it's a fun place to work. I've also head about Dogfish Head 61, which is their 60 IPA (which is really good) with white wine added. Argh.

Also on my short most anything made by Anheuser Busch. I'm baffled at the fact that Bud Lite is the best selling beer in America - and I think it has triple the sales of its closest competitor.
A true triumph of advertising.

I was in Germany for "Re-unification Day", the day the former East Germany was united with West Germany. This was the first day that Americans were officially allowed to travel into East Germany. Since this was a holiday we decided to travel into what had been East Germany. My friends and I stopped for gas and we saw a store across the street selling beer at very low prices. . Because of the exchange rate of dollars to West Germany Marks to East Germany marks the exact price was hard to calculate but it was around a nickle for a large beer. We all bought some and spit it out after one taste. I do not remember the name something like Kronesburgh. Anyway we know then why Communism had failed. When the Germans could not brew a decent beer what could they do right.

American (the lite version made it drinkable, barely)
Narangasset Bay

Two horrible beers we had to drink in college for price.
Schlitz was considered an upgrade.

I think Schmidts gets unfairly confused with Schlitz. I don't mind it at all.

Around 1980 I had something called Canadian Ace, seventy nine cents a gallon. Yeah, they sold it in gallons.

Surprised Rolling Rock did make the list. PA beer I know but OMG, ughhhhhhhhh.

Something called Jacob Best Ice, which was essentially a bottom a bottom of the barrel offering from Pabst. It was truly awful

A stout brewed by the Boulder (CO) Beer Co. I literally had to walk this one off after drinking only a part of it--as in "get some air". My father in law couldn't drink it either--and he'll drink anything. Maybe the bottle just got jostled too much on the way home from Colorado.

Fairfax, do you know when Curve Beer when out of production? Early to mid 1970s?
