What would the student section turnout be for a home playoff game?

Assuming we beat Maryland, and assuming we play a home game Saturday 12/21, I'm wondering what our student section will look like for that game. Finals end Friday the 20th, but based on my experience the campus is typically a ghost town that last day or two of finals. How many students are going to hang around 3, 4, or 5 extra days for the game?

Housing and dining halls will stay open until Sunday but I can't imagine we'll be able to fill 21k seats in the student section like we do for the big in-season games. I think the overall turnout will be way down even though some kids will want to hang around and party for a few more days. I'm guessing that the student section ticket allotment will be a lot less for the playoff game.

I don't think it will be good and students can't transfer tickets if they get them. Picking up my Daughter after he last final on the 19th - should have extended my hotel for a few more days when I booked months ago.

Well, the weather looks rough with a high of 28. That means we could be in the teens by game's end at 7 pm ish. There could also be some snow.

I am thinking about going so have been looking at tickets. After the win at MN, tickets went up. However, people are bailing out left and right. As a result, the all in low ticket price is $7. You can get lower bowl, between the 40 yard lines, in the first 40 rows for less than $40 all in (handling charges, taxes and ticket price).

I meant the potential home playoff game but Maryland is a different story. My kid has student tickets and is going Saturday but has said that other students were selling their tickets for $5 and some couldn't even give theirs away. Stadium is going to be pretty empty.

I wonder if they'll check for student IDs for the student section on Saturday.

I expect the place to be rocking for a playoff game and not an empty seat in the house. You ask a good question though. Often, schools close dorms for the holidays so I wonder if they university will keep them open and kids can stay back until Sunday.

I read that they will stay open until Sunday. I just think most students won't stick around.

Since the students can't resell their tickets I wonder what they will do with those seats since they will be in the student section? That section won't be full even for a playoff game.

That's what I was getting at. I think instead of the full 20k plus allotted to the students they do something like 8-10k student tickets. Won't be quite as loud with oldheads like me replacing some of the students but at least there's a better chance to fill the stadium.

Technically there won't be a "student section" for the playoff game. No tickets have been sold.
Option 1: PSU reduces student ticket allotment up front to sell tix for higher $ to the public
Option 2: PSU makes all current student tix available to students for X days and if not sold, releases them for public sale

There's no way we won't have a student section but I do think it will be some combination of Options 1 and 2. Option 1 would still keep all the students in the south end zone but the sections that curve around the corner behind the team can be sold to the public. Season ticket holders get first crack at their seats while students have a lottery for the smaller number of their tickets. Anything left goes to the public. If not enough students are interested they can just shrink the student section accordingly.

Won't be as loud but hopefully still full.

Edit:
Just asked my PSU student about this and they said the university already sent out an email to all students gauging interest. Student tickets will be a raffle and the university will decide the number of student tix based on the response to the email. Regular season was around $35/game and playoff game would be $28.

The students will plan to stay around because the dorms are staying open.

The potential problem is that the student tickets cannot be sold or transferred, and that wasn't 100% clear at the time of application. I am sure that there are a # of kids who put in the request just to sell them, or to be an extra application for a friend, and that is not going to happen, so they might burn the tickets.

Why would a student put in for tickets then if they wouldn't plan to use it? Since they cannot sell them the only reason to spend that money is if you plan to attend.

As I said, it wasn't very clearly stated. And there were kids trying to sell Ohio State and Whiteout tickets for $500, so it definitely happens.

The email from the university went out last week and it was made clear to the students that playoff tickets will not be transferrable.

It was not stated anywhere on the checkout page. This is a stupid conversation, so you can say whatever you want, but I am just stating that there are probably going to be some $28 tickets that end up not being used. It makes no sense that they couldn't be transferred/sold anyway.

Is this a joke? With 88,000 students of which 51,000 live in Pennsylvania and you think they can't sell 21,000 tickets to a playoff game at a price even cheaper than regular game ticket? Remember tickets are not limited to university park students.

Students absolutely will get tickets just to scalp them but they can’t scalp the playoff game (non transferable) so in theory only kids planning to go to the game would register for it.

I guess some might put in that didn’t realize they couldn’t resell but hopefully that’s not the case

Why would that not make sense? It’s one game not season tickets. And it’s for a specific weekend which is relatively soon. For one game, you put in if you can and would go.

It would have been stupid if they didn’t make this non-transferable.

I know, they act like kids don't have access to cars to drive up the day of the game (and stay in dorm or apartment for the night). Sounds like a making a mountain out of a molehill - most will happily make the drive to be part of PSU's first Playoff experience.

Why can non-students sell them but students can't?

I thought it was already announced somewhere that the student section will be the exact same size as usual. PSU has less control over ticketing for this game, the CFP controls the playoff and gets the ticket revenues so I think they are making the decisions on pricing, availability, distribution, etc. and it's probably the same rules for every school. PSU is getting the parking and concession revenues.

It's $25, I doubt they care and will just eat the cost if it turns out they can't attend. Today's students are different, $25 is nothing to them as they live more luxuriously and blow money on all sorts of stupid crap these days like $15 coffees and smoothies.
