Football Which Penn State freshmen could be green lit in 2022?

Red light Allar?

He's being mentioned as a potential 1st Round Draft Choice

“Not a true dual-threat, but capable of scrambling when the play breaks down. Throw power transfers to off-schedule, off-platform opportunities. Strong enough to make timely, accurate cross-body throws on the move. Functional athleticism derives in part from a foundation at other positions earlier in career. Shows anticipatory feel for the position. Strong production as a junior improved to outstanding during senior season. Only seven interceptions in 514 throws (one in 73.4 attempts) in 2021. May need time to adjust to speed of the game and processing rate at the next level. Most naturally talented thrower in the 2022 quarterback class. Not tapped out by any means and possesses immense upside. Should become an impact high-major starter with NFL Draft first-round potential.”

This is a kid who may be in college for only 3 years. Redshirt him? -- don't think so.

If I were the coach, I’d be right there with you. However, I am not and Clifford coming back makes it fairly evident he’s going to be the starter as long as he’s healthy.

What would it say about our team if a true FR QB beats out a presumptive 4th year starter? Yikes.

I say Allar plays more than previous back-ups, but only starts if Clifford goes down. Green light. Just a guess.

Small sample size, but based on the eye test, Vellieux looks to be the most talented option out of the gate. Not to say Allar or Pribula might shine down the road, but from what I've seen, CV should start. But doubt the staff has the guts to make that decision. Trautwein has said to recruits, the best five will start regardless of class...will the head coach assume the same stance at QB?

With the portal, I don't believe there are any redlights any longer. You play when you are the best opportunity to win. Specific to Allar, he played in a smaller program in HS but did play a lot of the major powers in the playoffs. He did well but St. Ed's (who has a really high end DE looking at us for next year) really shook him and he didn't adjust well in the all star game. I suspect he is going to need a year but who knows? he is supposed to be very coachable and a quick study, plus he's in school now so will have a full spring. It will be interesting to see who gets more attention, Beau or Allar.

I struggle to take seriously any article that suggests a player who hasn't played a down in college projects as anything in the NFL draft. I'm old enough to remember when when people were comparing Tony Sacca to Dan Marino, and Tony is far, far, far from the only highly touted HS QB who had "all the tools" to play on Sunday and either didn't make it or struggled to get a back-up job. Maybe Allar becomes the next Josh Allen (a lightly recruited nobody coming out of high school), maybe he's better, maybe he's as close to Allen as Sacca was to Marino. I'm excited we signed him, but I'm going to wait to see if can prove himself better than the other guys on the roster and then can excel at the P5 FBS level before I think about whether or not he's going to leave early for the draft.

Obli. In all fairness to Allar, they only had one week to practice. His offensive line was clearly not giving him a lot of time. He also had a TD dropped in the end zone and didn’t get nearly the same amount of playing time as the kid going to Clemson who played on the West team. On balance, I thought Allar looked fine in the All Star game. He did seem to be too determined to try to make plays downfield when he had easy shorter throws wide open. I hope he shows well and get to play early, but like you said, it’s a big jump from high school to college regardless of how talented the player is.

There have been plenty of highly successful Freshmen /redshirt Freshmen QB’s over the years in college football. I say go with Allar. Clifford had his shot -multiple shots. Not sure Penn State has the luxury of sitting Allar in the age of the portal.

Dave, I still have my Tony Sacca -Phoenix Cardinals football card somewhere in my collection. You may have inspired me to start the search.***

***I really don’t want to deal with my wife asking which stacks can be thrown away or donated every time I set one down.

Everyone can portal. Greenlight everyone who can contribute.

Easy Mary. This is just speculation by some talking head.
True, but it was the first impression. I was at the bowl game. The team on the field played like a 2-6 team in the second half. I'll rather have the new kids learn while losing 5-7 than another season like the last two. I still believe that coaching is the major problem on offense.
