Which returning WR will step up in the Rose Bowl, leading to momentum for next year?

The answer is none. Franklin and Yurcich moving to 12 personnel this year (before Washington got hurt), despite both coaches strongly preferring 11 personnel suggests the entire crop on the roster are not able to contribute.

Still predicting a 7-5 season, Wally?? lol

If we played 5 teams with a pulse vs. 2, that is what we end up with. Here is a hint. Our ten wins were over teams that don't finish in the top half of the Big Ten almost every year. We beat scrubs, and were dominated by the two good teams we played, one of which was not competitive.

Yeah, Lonnie White, Jr. was the player deciding between PSU and Baseball; got a $1.5 Million signing bonus with the Pirates. Really liked him as an athletic, good-sized WR. For what it's worth, he was injured most of the 2022 baseball season.
I talked with one of his former Malvern teammates who said that his favorite sport was actually basketball. That was a big loss in that class. Exceptionally talented athlete.

In the 94 Rose Bowl there was a bomb completed to a guy who I had to look at the program to see who he was. Joe Jurevicius stepped up that day....hoping someone unexpected does this year but I don'tsee that guy.

My guess is KLS bc he has seen the privilege of early playing time, earned his way into the doghouse with drops, has picked it up a bit and now can seize the moment to take a leadership role for next year.

If he isn't ready, that says something too....

Yep, let's hope for the KLS coming out party in Pasadena at 2pm PST on Jan 2nd.

Maybe not "elite" but getting 2 WR's that are average or better in speed and can run routes and actually catch a football will lead to a big improvement, especially with a QB that can actually get a decent percentage of throws in the average catch radius of the WR's..........

No doubt Stubblefield is trying to develop the WR's on the roster. But if that was going great Franklin wouldn't be wooing every decent WR that is hitting the portal.........

Fortunately for PSU WR's that can make an impact seem to be the greatest in number position wise based upon the short history of the transfer portal, with this year looking that way as well.
Wasn't this Tinsley this year? If we got a Tinsley next season would he be a game changer or season changer for us? Just questioning if a portal guy significantly upgrades our WR room. We absolutely need to try, not arguing that. I guess if no one in house steps up then yes we made an improvement but maybe just incrementally and not significantly.

Forgot that it is a fair point that we should have a much better QB next season to help the WRs look better.

I'm hoping for more of an impact from this year's portal WR's than what Tinsley provided in 2022. He was OK in that he fit into the offense and caught most of the balls that were catchable, but didn't provide much of a deep threat that he was reportedly going to provide. Also didn't seem to step up big in the big moments against the best teams/CB's PSU faced.

Gotta trust Stubblefield's evaluations regarding what PSU has internally versus what's available in the portal. But it seems the staff has already made those evaluations and is in the hunt for portal WR's in a big way, which in itself I take as a reflection on the potential of the WR's on the roster.

I am still hopeful at least one of the freshman this year steps up.

I have the same "hopes"

But where I finished my career there was a strict "saying" or unwritten rule: "HOPE is not a business plan." Which is why Franklin and Stubblefield are shaking all the portal trees for help at WR..... It seems that Franklin's business plan is to bring in a couple experienced WR's to have a much greater chance to field a better WR's group in 2023........

Right. They are willing to adjust. That is something your boy never did.

Harrison can Play. Otherwise you are correct unfortunately.

Harrison wasn't going to PSU no matter what. The staff tried, I don't even think he visited more than once, if at all.

McCord is a Jersey kid. Probably similar situation. It's like getting Kaytron out of IMG. He's a VA kid who attended a prep school in Florida, not an actual Florida kid.

The Buckeyes just got "another Five Star WR." Hartline is killing it in recruiting WR's.
They now have the highest rated group of WR's in the country for their 2023 class!

How about the WR recruits from the Class of 2022?

Who steps up and when?
Good post Roy. The board tends to forget about the guys who have not really yet seen the field. Clifford, this year showed that he can get open and catch the ball. I see a big year from him when he gets more playing time. Tight end is another position that should be a huge help in helping the passing game be more than just average.

Yes, it's great that there are 4 2022 WR's that are progressing towards contributing, with Evans having burned his redshirt in 2022. But the reason the staff is burning a trail to the top portal WR's is that those players are still young and not ready to be relied upon as a #1 or #2 WR for 2023.

It looks like a good young group, but the reporters that get to attend PSU practices seem to be in agreement that these young guys don't seem ready yet to emerge as leaders of the PSU WR group. It will be interesting to see who among them is talked about in Spring practice and is generating buz going into next Fall's camp.

Evans getting playing time this season has to be a big plus, as coming from paying QB in H.S. it could have been reasonable to believe he would be the least likely to contribute as a true freshman.

Will be great if a couple of the 2022 WR's are ready to contribute in 2023, but it seems that the staff is looking for the nucleus of the 2023 WR starters to come from a couple of incoming transfers, KLS, Wallace, Clifford and possibly Evans at this point. But I plan to be at the B/W game to see what the young WR's can do......

It will have to be KLS and maybe Liam Clifford in the bowl game. Liam Clifford looks like a player to me -- decent size, runs good routes, catches everything and he's strong and tough. Not a deep threat of course but he is the kind of receiver who can be a real pest in the B1G.

Maybe contributions from Wallace and Evans. KLS is still developing and could become a solid Big Ten wideout.

It would be GREAT if PSU could land Dante Cephas -- he has the size and decent speed. Cephas and Clifford together could cause some problems for smaller secondaries.

But really, the kind of arm Allar has can make your whole receiving corps looks so much better. The last few years there have been large categories of routes that weren't even run because Cliff couldn't make the throws consistently. Now you can run deep sideline or deep post with a much higher likelihood of the wideout being able to make a play on the ball.

The reason McSorley had so much success with 50-50 balls was that he had receivers with good size but also because trace could reliably put the ball in a place where the wideouts were expecting it to be. That may be possible next season and that would totally change our perception of the wideouts group.

Remember 2005, Williams, Norwood and Butler burst on the scene. But what also burst on the scene was Michael Robinson with a lot of confidence and a better arm than people gave him credit for.

You raise some very good points but a couple of misinterpretations. Your take on Clifford is spot on. He can be a weapon but would need to be balanced by a legit deep threat and underneath player allowing him to gobble up the Lion's share of targets. Allar can make receivers look better than they are but he needs to be upright to do it, and for that he needs a deep threat to force opponents to play the deep third, something they haven't feared since Godwin left and also the key to MY's offense. His offense is built around the expectation have having a player similar to Dez Bryant.

McSorley is the lead precise passer we have ever had. The 50/50 balls were arm punts in the direction of the receiver. The receiver did everything. He was successful because having the best spread mind in the game as his coordinator, Barkley in the backfield buying him time to run or launch the ball deep and have Godwin or Gesicki to go get the ball. McSorley's best trait as a QB was being able to buy time with his legs keep his eyes downfield, recognizing if his target (he only ever had one option in the passing game after Michigan in 2016) was single covered or double covered and throw deep if single covered, run if not.

Nothing to disagree with here; obviously PSU doesn't have a deep threat, they don't have a single receiver who would play at Ohio State or Michigan right now. They don't have anybody who can get open in single coverage against a top tier B1G corner. And they won't have that in 2023 either. So you gotta make do.

My only bit of optimism is that for 5 years now they haven't had a QB who could reliably throw deep (and it's maybe 6 years if you count McSorley who played half the 2017 season not 100% physically).

If they can scheme to get some of their guys wide open, at least Allar (provided he has protection) will be able to get the ball there. Hopefully 2023 we'll hear less of those disappointed groans after a pass misses a wide open receiver 30 yards deep. (And don't get me wrong, sometimes Cliff could nail those throws, you just never knew when).

I guess we'll have to disagree about McSorley. I think you only need to look at the B1G championship to see he could chuck it deep with pretty good accuracy.

How about Mac Hippenhammer? :)

Dude is playing for the Miami Redhawks in the Bahamas Bowl. 2nd team All- Mac.

He is out of eligibility...but funny that he couldn't cut it at PSU....now we are heavily recruiting a player just like him to be our potential lead receiver from Akron.

Times have changed.

Maybe Clifford can become a Tim Dwight type? That kid plagued us, aargh

Tim Dwight was more of a speedster I think (at least for his time). He was too fast for PSU's punt coverage a couple of times as I recall.

Dwight was more KJ Hamler than say Graham Zug who Clifford compares favorably to.

Would be the biggest WR on the PSU roster, other than Meiga
My sister and daughter went to Wake so I've watched all 4 of his games against them plus a few more. Very good player, can body up in the endzone and box out defenders. Would be a great pick up...

On3 has him listed as the #39 WR in the portal

Hey @87 Penn St8 if you're in the Winston area for a visit and don't have a schedule conflict on a football weekend, you're welcome to hook up with our small group that gets together to eat, drink, and watch the Penn State games.

Roy-

I often wondered exactly where you were down there.

My sister is ending a decade-long assignment on Africa for the Peace Corps and may move back to Winston. We also have dear friends on Lake Hickory who have been recruiting us to head there to retire early- rent free new house built to our specs plus amazing boat dock is the bait. If I did that I'd buy a lot up in Boone to stream fish with a cabin and get App State season tix...likely live Walden style with my dogs! And then hop between the NC schools and UT games....lots to pick from

We typically are down there over July 4th week- but otherwise not much in the Fall since my daughter passed as a frosh. We did get to see Wake beat Louisville and Lamar Jackson, and lose to Duke w/ Daniel Jones.

My gut is that I'll end up down there in 10 years. If you happen to get to campus there is a memorial bench for my daughter right on the Quad to the right of Wait Chapel as you look at it.

Lovely part of the country. Thanks for the invite!

Someday....I look forward to it!

Yikes, was not aware you had lost a college-age daughter...that's tough stuff. Belated condolences.

Thanks for your response. This is a nice area, and I'm also reminded that we have a pretty nice community here on the board where we develop friendships, can encourage and console others.

R-

Thanks.

It has been 4.5 years and we have come to accept the way things are. No fault on her or schools part- bizarre condition that couldn't be diagnosed- passed on campus.

My son was wearing a WAKE sweatshirt at a party in Venice Beach last year- and Matt Colburn (former Wake RB)and John Wofford (current Ram back up QB) were there. They chatted him up and remembered the night she passed away. It was a Friday night- there was a fraternity that made a huge bonfire off campus and stayed up all night. Whenever a cop knocks on your door at 1 am there is nothing good that can happen.

It is a small school. Did a great job with a memorial service attended by half the student body.

Gotta deal with the hand we are dealt. It is what it is.

Appreciate your note-

Cephas is not "just like" Hippenhamner. Cephas is 2 levels above Hippenhammer at least.

Sorry not even close. Zug is about 6 inches taller than Liam.
If you want a comparison I would say Mike Dudek from Illinois...which is a compliment not a put down.

Utah stomped USC.
WR is the least of their problems.
They stomped them because U$C became toothless on offense with a gimpy Williams and the U$C defense is atrocious. However everyone ignores that about Riley's programs and still annoint him as one of the best coaches despite never fielding a good defense.
