It seems every time I open up BWI all I see are BB posts since they are ranked #13. Is that such an accomplishment? We've been at the top of the national wrestling scene for a decade and all of a sudden basketball gets the headlines? Penn State Lacrosse is at #1, Hockey at #7, Wrestling #2 and our other winter teams are great, so where's the love? Don't misunderstand me, I love that the basketball team is having some success after quite a few years of mediocrity at best. Let's just have some parity on the main page shall we, although I've seen some hockey coverage, or am I just a bitter wrestling fan? What say you?

PS, It's seems it is the same over on the Iowa board too, I never see wrestling coverage on their main page.

Wrestling fans (and I include myself) are as fanatical as any, but their numbers are much smaller than for basketball and certainly football. Even is the Mecca of high school wrestling (PA) I would guess that's the case.

The amount of live wrestling on the B1G Network illustrates the point. The B1G is far and away the top wrestling conference with second place being almost irrelevant (sorry Big 12, or is it the ACC? Anyone care?).

There are two revenue positive sports: football and men's basketball. That's where widespread interest is. I would hazard a guess that despite Penn State's incredible success in wrestling and the lack of success in men's basketball (until this year), that there are more basketball fans that wrestling fans among the BWI posters.

I find it difficult to believe that men's basketball at Penn State makes money, just based on the success rate over the last ten years.

Same reason the prodigal son got the party. When you've been a screw up for long enough anything positive gets graded on a curve.

The cold reality is that PSU basketball is the second highest profit maker while PSU wrestling loses money.

Put in a different way, PSU football and PSU basketball's success/existance helps to support PSU wrestling financially.

Totally agree on the financial part. But without Russ Rose and Cael Sanderson, who would the rest of the coaches want to emulate?

Wrestling is getting closer to break even, which Cael has stated as a goal of his. The Penn State Wrestling Club is non profit so it donates the excess of revenues over expenses each year to PSU for the benefit of the wrestling team and that amount has been over $100K for the last several years and the amount continues to grow. Some time soon the hope is the wrestling team will financially pay for itself.

Hey, I am a wrestling fan and a Sanderson fan. I am not complaining. That said, I have read that PSU men's basketball generates a $5.5 million dollar a year profit.

Is that before or after the donation to the Slush fund? Certain people are sticklers for compliance. :)

TV money has the bball team making a LOT of money. Part of being in a conference where the money is shared instead of needing to rely on the success of our team.

In fact, I have seen numbers from several years ago that showed PSU basketball making more net income than Villanova. That certainly surprised me.

Philly born and love College Basketball. I’ve attended PSU basketball since the 60’s and it’s been almost always an awful slog. NOW, we finally have something exciting. Rejoice and allow for the “extra” coverage. There is no doubt what so ever that wrestling is the better sport .... but, there is little or no reason to cuff the BB coverage. Things will return to normal next year!

Be careful with getting vexed. I have heard it causes autism, even though the experts dismiss such concerns.

To be fair, PSU football, the Big10 football and basketball TV contracts pay for wrestling.
PSU football as a stand alone entity pays it's own Bill's. My guess is if Big10 basketball TV money is counted separately, the basketball program floats in the red inky water.

Banger, where is the main page? WTF is that?

a simple google search would answer any and all questions about how penn state basketball does.... https://www.statecollege.com/news/l...han-100-million-in-revenue-in-201718,1479244/

i don’t think this needed a thread you are talking about a team that has been ranked since what 06-07 and hasn’t been to the big tournament since Taylor Battle lead them. Instead of being “vexed” for a headline, just enjoy the success of penn state sports and the fact a team that’s been in the bottom of the barrel is now ranked 13th. As a fan of wrestling, we have all been spoiled. Sit back folks and ClimbWithUs

Now that the other stuff has been covered. Seriously, vexed? Did it hurt, and how does your wife like it?

Google? What? Don't you dare mention Google. Mentioning Google apparently makes you lose all your friends.

Tom McAndrew has contributed more to this wrestling board than any other BWI employee. Not even close.
Tom can confirm, but I don;t think he is a BWI employee, though I could be wrong.

Also, there are like 10 guys who post about hoops on Tom's board. There's got to be at least 15 or 20 that post about wrestling here. Right?
