Why would we have a stripe out for Rutgers?

I think our athletic department is reaching here. Granted the home schedule doesn't have much but Rutgers? There should be nothing special done when they come here. They are no different than playing Temple. Why don't we do a stripe out at Temple? Take over the Link and make it ours? But Rutgers? Who cares?

Because our home schedule is awful and this ended up being a night game. Nothing to do with Rutgers. Could have been any lame program if it's an 8 pm game.

It's PSU perpetuating the "Rutgers rivalry" jive that's been manufactured by the conference. Since we have no standing to disagree with any edicts from our savior Delany until the end of time, so it shall be done.

We are forever indebted to Delany because he was there for Penn State in its time of need. He clearly values Penn State, and we should be eternally grateful.

Why do so many get concerned with who we are playing for a "Stripe Out". Whether we wear Blue, White or Blue and White has nothing to do with the opposition. If our fan base is what I think and hope it is, there should only be a couple thousand Rutgers fans in the stands. They will be high up in the north end zone.

There are going to be a lot of recruits at the Rutgers game, since it is a night game. Recruits from both PA and NJ. We need to have a better atmosphere for this game than Rutgers has for any of their home games. If you were at the Rutgers game last year, you have to admit it was a pretty good atmosphere. It is up to the Penn State fans to create an atmosphere that puts Rutgers to shame.

I am sick and tired of people saying we should not award Rutgers with a Stripe Out. IMO anyone who knowingly wears the wrong color for this game is a jerk and should be embarrassed by themselves for not supporting this effort. Forget about the team we are playing and support the Nittany Lions and the effort to make a great atmosphere for a night game attended by a lot of recruits.

I remember aTm did something similar (red white and blue) after 9/11, but not with t-shirts, with placards.

I think they used placards placed under the seats of the stadium, and the announcer asked the crowd to reach under their seats and pull out the cards and hold them up. It looked pretty cool.

ru overdid it for the PSU game last year, as they employed every stadium cliche in the book. The average fan might have been impressed, but anyone who has ever been experienced knows that Beaver Stadium has a much better (non-manufactured and consistent) game day atmosphere, and not just because it is twice the size of ru's stadium.

All of the above said, I agree that the "stripe-out" is a good idea from the standpoint of prime-time TV and recruiting. Unfortunately, it is hard to ignore the opponent, and many will see the stripe-out as Penn State promoting ru as a marquee match-up, even a rival. It certainly would be better to reserve a prime-time stripe-out for a better opponent (one with tradition), but unfortunately, the schedule this year doesn't allow it.

To have some reason for the fans to get excited. I mean, it's Rutgers. Meh.

Not really when one considers we've had stadium white outs for Iowa and Illinois in the past.

If you're going to try something like this, might as well do it for a prime time audience no matter who the opponent...and the fact of the matter is, save for Michigan there really aren't any good alternatives to try something like this (save for the great recommendation above about doing a red/white/blue stripe out for Army)

I guess it is just me, but I get excited every game, just sitting in the stands, watching the end of warm ups then the Blue Band comes on to the field. That gets me excited whether they are playing Ohio State or Buffalo.
Exactly. Everything other than the team on the field. PSU just coming up with more ways to have fun knowing the team WE ARE playing won't suffice.

Perhaps the recruits standing on the sideline? Great idea for a big TV audience.
Forget Rutgers....think marketing PSU Football

The Rutgers game is the second best home game on the schedule b/c it's at night. This will look great on TV and even better in person where there will inevitably be tons of recruits on hand.

I'd ask fairgambit. He has a strong opinion on this.

Indeed I do, and I have some inside information. They were originally going to call it a "Wipe Out", which it will be, and everyone would bring surf boards, but they realized the space problems that would create, so they settled for "Stripe Out." Hey, maybe just the Cheerleaders could come in with surf boards, and bikinis! How cool would that be. And we could have the Blue Band play "Wipe Out" by the Surfaris.

ro: Interesting tidbit about aTm.

As I have never had the opportunity to see the Lions play in Beaver Stadium (plenty of bowl games, but no regular season games in State College yet), and since you can't tell watching on TV (because they cut away from the stadium during halftime), I was wondering if PSU students ever do card stunts during halftime. I'm guessing not, since the school puts its students in or near the end zone, but I thought I'd ask.

Cal puts its student section between the 40's on the east side of California Memorial Stadium (you can do this when you are a school where tickets are in somewhat lower demand), and the students regularly do halftime card stunts. They are pretty entertaining, but you gotta save at least one card when the stunts are over, because you need to hold it over your head. When the stunts are over,.the students promptly chuck the cards into the air, and a falling card can sting you pretty good if it hits you edge first.

IMO, Illinois on Halloween is a better game. It also should have been our whiteout.

OK, I'd say that for recruiting and attempt to make up for a terrible home slate are the best answers so far. However, the gentlemen with the US Flagout for Army concept has the best idea by far.

We used to do this thing with marshmallows.

Award Rutgers a Stripe Out? Rutgers has not done anything in nearly 150 years of football to be awarded much of anything. That aside, atmosphere at Penn State games should be created by the fans, not by artificial efforts by the Athletic Department. Any school, Rutgers/Maryland, can, and often does, have their fans all wear certain colors in a effort to create an atmosphere that is not normally there. It is something all recruits have seen dozens of times. It is not original and in our case, it is not necessary. At Penn State the best atmosphere is created by the tens of thousands of tailgaters and the raucous crowds stimulated by the play on the field. Leave the contrived atmosphere to the lowlifes of the college football world. We are Penn State and our game day atmosphere does not need to be created by some empty suit in the Athletic Department.

My idea would be to have the stripe out against West Point.

Red and white stripes with student section wearing all blue with 50 clusters of white.

Would be an awesome tribute to the armed forces.

When A&M did this it was pretty cool.

To me, that is appropriate because it pays tribute to the Armed Forces. I see a distinction between that and a "Stripe Out" just because it's Rutgers, or just because it's a night game, or .....

Someone in the Athletic Dept needed something to put on their annual review to justify their position. I suspect it comes down to something like this:

"Cultivated, developed and managed the execution of successful "Stripe-Out" concept for nationally-televised prime-time football game. Stripe-Out responsible for 100+ mentions during network broadcast and delivered favorable impressions of Penn State and Athletics. 360-degree post-event surveys confirmed the popularity of the promotion, resulting in high-scores re: liklihood to purchase future overpriced exciting ticket bundling and lowering to N&DS (nickel-and-diming sensitivity). "

How long until we get a new Associate to the Assistant Associate AD in charge of "Stadium Color Schemes"

Maybe Benjamin Moore would be interested in becoming a Corporate Partner?

hyperbole aside, you're not far from identifying the main reason that higher education costs have risen disproportionately... My role in the private-sector has me working with colleges everyday (very large and very small institutions) and i am bewildered by the amount of staff/ Associate to the Assistant Director type positions (that you so artfully mock) exist out there...

No doubt. Some of us have been railing against this for a while now.....as it certainly permeates all of "higher education", not just athletic departments.

The direct expenses of "educating students" are not nearly as much of a factor in the rising price of higher education....not compared as the "administrative burden" - which has gone through the roof.
Big-time "academia" is living in Wonderland wrt costs/spending/waste/graft.

I heard about that from my wife. Cleaning that up must have been a nightmare, no?

Fall of '89 the Boston College game was played as the remnants of Hurricane Hugo came down in a deluge. The marshmallows were heavy and wet that day, my friend. My best friend and dorm-mate took one to the eye and went down hard. He's still shaken up about it to this day. I don't remember the game at all, but I'll never forget the epic battle in the student section... so many seats were empty due to the storm that we had room to perform sophisticated flanking maneuvers, exchange volleys, charge and retreat. I cannot imagine the mess that was left afterward. Do marshmallows eventually melt in the rain? :D
