Will Betancourt

Are you back already after your beatdown over the weekend? A little humility would suggest you should lay low for a while.
i don't recall taking any beatdowns last weekend? i had a nice time at the tournament actually lol i was predicting you guys would win from december on.

just his results. you guys have tons of young talent to brag on. why pick the guy who couldn't beat caleb fish? lol this is almost as silly as when some were saying they preferred hildebrandt to suriano.
Btw, some of us preferred Hildy over Suriano not because he was better. No, we preferred PSU win the title with Drew on the team instead of Nicky.

guy who couldn't beat out creighton edsell would beat out a former top 5 AA? lol
I don't think it was a "can't beat out Creighton Edsell" thing vs Cael doesn't think he scores more than 2-3 points at Nationals this year. I do think he might have considered (I'm only speculating) it if Spencer was healthy ... every point matters and it's possible Facundo was even further ahead by March than in January. The Fish loss was the bad one. His losses to John Martin Best and Thomas Bullard were him making major freshman mistakes (though obviously him being in matches with those 2 isn't good either)

Like I said, I think Facundo has a higher ceiling than Wittlake but to say he's better than healthy Wittlake is wrong. I do expect major progression from Facundo in the next year.

possible, but of all the young psu guys, facundo is the one i'm the most skeptical of. he seems like the same guy he was as a sophomore. i have similar concerns about kennedy, so i'm not just being a hater.

He's definitely closing the gap on Brooks. I think he's down to about 12 wrestlers between them! Definitely closing the gap.

You don't have to explain yourself on this board anymore (granted, you probably do but still lol) I get you're just being objective.

Yeah to be honest, I think Kennedy is being overhyped a bit by your fans and it's due to the fact he wrestled Marinelli pretty close (when I think Marinelli was working back from an injury and there's insane room familiarity) I would pick him to AA next year though but lower AA. I've seen some Iowa fans that believe he should be in the same conversation as Keegan O'Toole.

I kinda agree with you to be honest. I actually felt this way when he signed. Now here’s the thing though, I’ve been known to be wrong. Not sure if I ever shared this one with anyone..it’s quite embarrassing but I wasn’t all that high on Bo Nickal when he committed to PSU despite all his accolades. Boy did I shit the bed on that one.

Wittlake is actually from Coos Bay, Oregon, which is approximately two hours north of the California border. Coos Bay and North Bend border each other. I grew up in North Bend and my family still lives there. My sister actually lives two houses down from where Steve Prefontaine grew up.
And some really good steelhead, half pounder, and sea-run cutthroat fishing 🤤🤤🤤

Okay - 4 days have passed since NCAAs ended, we've been linked to:

Vito Arujau
Pat Glory
David Carr
Travis Wittlake
AJ Ferrari
Daton Fix
(the last 3 is because of a simple statement by John Smith)

I just can't imagine Carr leaving ISU. He has a lot more friends there than he does in Happy Valley. He has been the leader of that team, sitting matside for their matches at nationals and congratulating them on their wins. I would love to have him, but I just don't see him walking away from ISU over one (relatively) disappointing season.

you and I are going to remember this. I hate to type it because Ill be flogged at the next board meeting and even not even be given VIP treatment in Aruba coming up......but....you may be right

I can’t believe you guys haven’t guessed it yet. It’s Sadulaev.

because they are homers.

Im not high on PK either out of the gates. He may just be the new version of the recent Marinelli. A grinder who never maxes out to his lofting ranking. We also see how these iowa grinders never seem to stay healthy over a career of late. He probably is a 3x AA with a final appearance as a junior. But he will probably be someone tHR-MVP brings up as a lack of production spot against his HS ranking in a couple of years.

I'm glad you said "recent Marinelli" because that's accurate. PK isn't remotely on the same level as the prime Marinelli. I think Marinelli somewhat mentally checked out after 2020 but at his apex, he was an absolute animal and we can't forget that. Absolutely kicked Cenzo's ass at Big Tens 2019. I don't think Kennedy is ever good as 2018 - 2020 Alex Marinelli.

No wonder you change handles so much.

I have the same feelings about Facundo. Hope I’m wrong but the inability to get to any offense against NQ guys this year has me concerned. Hamiti was running through NQ guys this year as a true freshman.

I think we're all just spoiled and expect our freshman to AA or better. The bar has been set really high. Looks like he went 1-2 vs NQs. Beat Barzack 3-1. Was there a takedown in that match?

The shocked reaction Askren gave, was certainly not from seeing Wittlake’s name, in my opinion. His reaction was for someone much better than that. Whether Piles actually knows anything concrete is a whole other question.

Facundo faced 3 NQs this year:
- lost 3-2 to 21 seed Bullard, who went 1-2
- beat 30 seed Barczak, who went 2-2 (but that includes consi pigtail, so really 1-2 in bracket position)
- lost 5-3 to 31 seed Fish, who went 0-2
--> Fair to say this year Facundo was equivalent to a 27-31 seed who went 1-2.

He should've beaten Bullard with experience and should improve some anyway, so let's say his floor next year is 20 seed.

B10 looks very navigable next year. Only 3 returnees (Amine, Hamiti, Kharchla) did better than 1-2 at nationals. With his outstanding defense, adding a little offense could significantly improve that seed. B10 4th is not getting a 20 seed.

IDK if that's enough to put him on the podium next year, but it could be enough to make him a podium contender.

Thanks. Much more detail than my 1-2 vs NQs, LOL. He certainly has potential with a year in the room.

Like I said, one reason I am very optimistic about Facundo is he was at least able to dominate the weaker competition, which is a good first sign. If he was beating the weaker competition like 3-2 then I'd be worried. Saw the kid's NLWC, he's willing to do all the right things. He was asked about his hobbies outside of wrestling in NLWC and said this.

NLWC: Off the mat, what are your main hobbies?

Facundo: Outside of wrestling, I like to lift weights and stay active. I am not much of a video gamer or too much of a social person. I like to work out and keep trying to reach physical perfection.

AHHH.....not certain those are positive traits outside of Ohio State :)

Just curious what you are basing this on? I tend to hope/believe in our guys to make jumps too—but Travis lost 1 pt decisions to Marinelli and O’Toole this year, and Alex didn’t look ready to compete with any AA at the Scuffle. I agree he has more upside—I’m just genuinely wondering if you know something I don’t about Alex’s progression. That said, I’m happy with Alex as our guy.
Combination.
First. Wittlake shredded his knee and no matter what, next season he is at best a wounded version.
Second, I used to get the opportunity to just talk wrestling with the coaches and a couple of the kids and some coming out parties to me when they happened weren't very surprising. Different job, different stresses, covid crap and life have taken reduced those relaxed opportunities.
However, like alot of people on here I have more than a few friends within the central PA wrestling community who would know. If I want to know I just ask questions. What I know is an non healthy Wittlake just isn't going to beat out a healthy and steadily improving Facundo. I have no idea if the kid follows a Cenzo path or just becomes a damn tough multiple time AA. I know there isn't any sense of concern from CCC&J.

Facundo will be a point getter at nationals.
A healthy Wittlake is probably a good competition, but Wittlake isn't healthy.

You were not alone, a lot of people doubted Bo simply because he was from Texas and their wrestlers hadn't had a lot of success at the next level. He had serious interest from a few of the big name programs so I had some optimism about his potential but never thought he would turn into the monster he would become.
