Women's Freestyle

She's into the quarters. Has 3x defending world champ from Japan next.

Haley didn't score in the first and gave up one after going on the shot clock, then scored a nice TD while Tosaka was herself on the shot clock. From top she tried to put the legs in, got too high, got reversed and gave up exposure points from there. Lost 11-2.

Total shame b/c Tosaka wasn't doing anything from neutral and Haley stood a good chance hanging on to the 2-1 lead if they go up at that point.

Needs a Tosaka win to pull her through.

Big day today for the Women of Freestyle...representing the good ol' US of A.

53 kg, 63 kg and 75 kg all contested, with the names Maroulis, Pirozhkova and Gray the women to root for. GO RED, WHITE and BLUE.

Gray went behind and cranked an arm bar for a pin.

Pirozhkova was down 4-2 in the second and defended a single with four crotch lifts for 8 points total. Final 10-7.

What an very exciting comeback for Maroulis! 2nd match in an insanely short period of time, and finds a way to dig deep and get it done in the last half minute.

I also watched most of the repechage & medal matches of women's wrestling last night. Admittedly I have never had much opportunity to watch women's wrestling before but there were some exciting matches last night. A lot of matches won right at the end. Icho's gold medal match was fun, as was the one 58kg bronze medal match that the Indian won.

In her semi match Maroulis had a beautiful moment to end it. Up 4-0, she was attempting to go behind and had decent position when she used her own foot to scoop Mattsson's ankle just enough to snatch the leg and immediately push straight through, putting Mattsson on her back and getting the fall. You don't usually see that level of creativity and intuition on the women's side. Really impressive day for Maroulis.

I don't understand freestyle scoring. How did Helen get to 4 points? 2 for the takedown and 1 for pushover, right? Regardless, a great match!

Maroulis wins the gold, with a 4-1 upset over Japan's Yoshida. Maroulis was down 0-1 on passivity after the 1st. She got a TD, a pushout, and ??? (can't remember) for her 4 points.

Yoshida was going for her 4th Olympic gold, and had won 16 World Championships before today's match.

Big, big win for Maroulis, and for USA Wrestling

I think they changed the pushout to a TD and that was how it got to 4-1.

That was impressive indeed!

After the medal ceremony for the weight class, the NBC announcers stated that Yoshida had only lost 2 matches in 14 years of competition. Wow! I knew she was a long-time force on the international scene, but didn't realize she was that dominate. No wonder she seemed so distraught at only getting a silver medal.

I think they changed the pushout to a TD and that was how it got to 4-1.

That would make sense. I thought at the time that it was really close to a TD, but the ref signaled 1 pt (as far as I could tell). Surprised that John Smith didn't mention the score change during his commentary.

I think they did change it from a push-out to a TD, the initial call was definitely called a push-out (the ref gave the thumb up signal), and I didn't see any technical violation and there was no passivity call in the second period. If they gave an explanation, I totally missed it.

The table changed the pushout (1) to a takedown (2) a few seconds after the fact. Announcers didn't get into it but Maroulis did have position behind Yoshida so it was warranted.

Edit: just noticed this question was answered above a few times, sorry for piling on.

Awesome win for Maroulis!! I noticed she's coached by the same guy who coaches Aaron Pico (Valentin Kalika).

Did anyone watch the 63kg final? Japan's Kawai won 6-0 and after shaking the Belarus coach, she took her own coach town, not once, but twice. Very funny. She's only 21.

I saw that. It seemed like he anticipated the moves. He made no attempt to prevent the TDs, and was smiling/laughing during and after each TD.

It was a nice reaction; not one you commonly see after a victory. The visuals of it were probably aided by the fact that she was a 21-year-old female, and the coach was a relatively older male.

One of the announcers said that his defense was lacking!

Bubba Jenkins vs. Joe Paterno, with roles reversed.

I can't seem to find a decent video clip yet. This one is poor, but it does show both throws.
