Wrestle Stat lineup

WrestleStat is a fantastic tool that compiles all results out there for the fans to access free of charge. Their ranking formula is just a math formula that I bet their founders will fully admit is flawed obviously. That being said, It's pointless to get upset over their rankings, I for one am grateful the website is out there.

No one goes there for the rankings or even cares about where they rank guys. Well at least I hope that's the case anyway. Aside from their rankins, the site is great and I use it quite often.

People like to complain about stuff they know doesn't matter and everybody knows isn't right. Why focus on the good parts when there's some bitching to be done?

That or they act as if they like to complain, out of boredom or to troll everyone else.

I can see Bo being a NQ at 149 in the right conference, definitely imagine there isn't a shortage of interest for him. He's beaten multiple NQs before.

"Wrestlestat rankings suck!" As timeless as "When will the schedule be out?"

Agree on all points and arent upset, but what formula is flawed to a point to have Carter ranked 4 th?? Was the loss to Washington THAT detrimental?
He beat how many top ranked guys last year? (4-5 IIRC) then lost to Kem, but avenged that loss.

Then RBY FIFTH?!?
Wasnt he undefeated last year??
Seriously,what algorithm does this?
Surely he doesnt care, nor do I, but what else does he need to do to get ranked #1??

Are you happier bitching or do you want me to explain it to you?

Well said by both you and McS. I really like WS for what it offers, granted some limitations.

That said, math is math, and what data scientist doesn't like a better formula? I believe WS could be even better with just a little tweak putting more weight on the most recent matches, and less the more matchups fade into the past. I suspect the RBY - ADS result (along with many more frustrating examples) would see some of the correction we all seek with such an adjustment.

Likewise it takes too long for new blood to build up enough of a resume to ratchet them up the rankings where they belong. Both Facundo and Beau will remain well below their justifiable ranks for most of the season as it progresses, and the pictures outcomes for individual matchups will continue to frustrate.

Why an adjustment hasn't happened is likely tied to maintaining the integrity of the original model - what is it ELO chess?

I am definitely in support of some well thought out evolution to the mathematical model.

With all the criticism, I still have to tip my cap (I think to Andegre is it?) as WS is just a fantastic resource for all of us. I love the historical information it brings to the table, the ability to modify lineups for what is and much more.

WS has tweeked, the most recent, I believe was 2019. Those tweeks were to reduce the number of matches required before a wrestler's score really started to move in the direction it should, and to improve the algorithm's response to recency.

Perfect? No. Better than it was? Yes. At the time it corrected some of the "results" people were whining about.

Theres no logical explanation so no,you just go check your lanyards
There is a logical explanation.

The results started out coming from the straight up ELO model. This model works well for chess, but requires 14 matches for a competitor's ranking to make sense.

And, despite the inordinate amount of time this whole site must take to manage (for donations), people bitched.

Andegre and Obrats listened, made changes despite the free work they're doing, and the results got better. Maybe not perfect, but better. And, people bitched.

Those guys follow these boards, and have listened and adjusted. However, they are keenly aware that an adjustment to "correct" any of your complaints also affects every other result. If they make you happy, it might turn other predictions a "wrong" way. They have thousands of fans scrutinizing their results, and they're just two guys, doing this for the love of the sport. They spend shit tons of time with all of the other stuff that their site is capable of. I doubt they have time to tweak the algorithm, run the result, then scrutinize every last prediction to see if it's going to make sense to every fan.

I'll leave you with two final thoughts.
1. The data is available. The ELO mathematics is available. Do your own and tweak away to your heart's content. We'll look forward to your results.
2. Wouldn't it be great if they would tweak the algorithm until it looked exactly like every other ranking service?
3. Be thankful for what they provide and send them a donation.

Well, that's three final thoughts. Maybe my algorithm is bad.

An interesting thing is that the “wrong” rankings put out by WS (in some of the cases cited above) would seem only to support the mantra that touts Cael & Co.’s “process” (and coaching powers at Nationals) as distinctly superior. In that sense, it would seem illogical for people who suport that mantra to be critical of an algorithm output that actually reinforces the idea that our coaches tend to develop guys to outperform their historical results when the lights are brightest.

Diversity in ranking systems, based on varying degrees of subjective vs. objective modeling, is a good thing*.

*WIN rankings excepted, of course. 😉

I wonder if RBY even knows WS has him 5th? If he was made aware, I bet he forgot about it before his next instagram post. Few care.

The bitching about WS is past the tipping point. Been explained/endorsed so many times I'm now more skeptical about the bitchers vs the rankings.

Of course, none of it matters. The only thing that does matter is what our wrestlers do.

I love Wrestlestat and use it often. I see nothing wrong with criticizing their algorithm. Having the returning champ ranked 5th when there has been no matches since the championships shows a major flaw. If the algorithm needs 16 results to run more accurately, then dont publish the algorithm results until January. Im sure they could find a wrestling reporter willing to provide a preseason ranking that is more reflective of the current situation. Run it like the CFB playoff rankings. They aren’t even started until mid season and everyone uses the AP rankings until then.

I could care less about WrestleStat's rankings, or anyone else's rankings for that matter. The data provided for free is a fantastic resource never before available. I'm very thankful they take the time to do this. It has come in very handy for me when making my KYPSW picks.

Criticizing Wrestlestat is almost Taboo here.. reason being, those guys work their tails off giving us a great site and dont charge anyone for their content. A noble gesture in my opinion and done by guys that obviously just love the sport and seems as if its their way of "giving back". No doubt, they themselves look at some of their rankings and predicted results and shake their heads but hopefully they realize most wrestling fans couldnt care less about a meaningless feature. It's the rest of the site they should be most proud of because it is just straight up sick!

Well, scratch that one off my calendar. I am now going either fishing or golfing Jan 28th.

Wrestlestat has the Hawkeyes taking us out 31-6. Why even bother watching?

On another front relative to the lineup. What are the odds Cael rolls out all three Lee brothers for one of our non-conference duals?

It would be kind of a unique milestone of sorts for the program, but they would burn Matt's shirt in the process.

Wrestle Stat is original and very cool. I didn't realize that people were forced to read it. Strange times :)

IMO asking for donations for a service with this much value is rough going for the designers. I would be all over a 'cheap' subscription despite my bitching and bailing on Flo 2 years ago. A buck or two a month is an easy one.

If Wrestlestat could muster say several thousand subscribers, then you are talking about some real annuity stream coin.

But then they would have to alter the ELO formula to keep all the natives happy.

I will be happy to bet you a Linenkugel ( sp) that the closer we get to the dual, the tighter the prediction will be.
You can play darts without a dartboard= thank you WrestleStats, you are great.
