Thoughts after rewatching Minny

interestingly, the refs for the Browns Steelers got this right. A RT lined up uncovered. The QB got blitzed and threw the ball touching the RG. The refs initially called intentional grounding but then realized the uncovered RT was near the ball so picked up the grounding call and then called illegal touching.
Depending on where the QB was in the pocket, illegal touching could be better for the offensive team (i.e. 5 yards and loss of down vs spot of pass and loss of down).
No matter, but just an interesting quirk on a play that didn't work anyway.

Donkoh and Ford out for the season

Don't quite understand the hate for Rucci. He actually played pretty well against Minny. Gave up a sack, yes, but not because he was beaten by the DE, but was late to pick up a blitz. Rucci had his best game to date against Minnesota.
It seems like he plays better the more that he plays; he's a fine backup. He also was going up against a pretty good defense, like when he had to play most of the Wisconsin game. He should do well against a poor defense this weekend.

My mistake. When I saw it live I thought it was the TE that went in motion. I hadn’t seen it since.

Football PSU Athletics announces $1 million gift for the Beaver Stadium Revitalization project

Am I the only one that every time I see a $million(s) donation for the stadium renovation thinks that it would have a bigger impact on PSU football if said donation was directed to NIL instead of what seems like fixing a problem that doesn't exist.

I did a number of engineering types of work during my 40 year professional career, one of which many years ago was writing manufacturing process control and modeling software in a language called Ada. The language was very robust as it was used for GE Defense applications and many times our group would be challenged to fix problems that were really physical problems within the complex manufacturing process lines. Hence the conversations we'd have about the hardest things to fix are those that aren't really broke..........
Personally, I'd give it to St. Jude's Children's Hospital. But maybe they did both. My guess is that they have widespread philanthropic giving. Money most of us can't even imagine having.

If he touched the ball (he didn't) it's illegal touching (ineligible receiver). Since he didn't touch, it's a penalty for grounding (no eligible receiver in the area and QB in the pocket) which would be loss of down and a spot foul. Which I imagine they would have accepted. Although, probably wouldn't have mattered, given the FG 2 plays later.

(not a huge deal in the end, but when I saw that play developing, I was like "that's not a legal play")

But what if those same people also are contributing to NIL. I mean, they can do both, and many probably are.

should have been a penalty. Now, we'd have declined it anyway because of the loss of yardage and down but it is a penalty.

That is not completely accurate. The 9.6 number represents yards per attempt, which is different than yards per coompletion. Yards per attempt favors QBs with higher completion percentages because a QB gets zero yards for an incomplete pass which brings down average per attempt for QB's who lower percentage passes. When you go with yards per completion, PSU is 32nd.

YPA does favor a QB with a higher completion percentage but I'd argue it is the better metric.
A QB who goes 1 for 30 but his one completion is for 30 yard has a YPC of 30 but a YPA of 1. A QB who goes 28 of 30 but every pass goes for 9 yards has a YPC of 9 and a YPA of 8.4. I'd think we all agree the second QB is far superior.

Donkoh and Ford out for the season

Ford was really coming on as the season went along. He clearly went past Beamon in the DT rotation a couple games ago. Team will really need Ford next season to be a run stopping DT anchor so hope "long term" is not an ACL.... Time for one of the young DT's to step up and get a good bit of playing time vs Maryland to be ready for the playoff game, so the team needs to get up big on MD early so that can happen. Gilliam, Artis or Blanding, time to step it up and take this opportunity!!

Really, same with Donkoh. He'll be an anchor of the OL in 2025, but whoever will be backing up Rucci at R-OT need to get some snaps there vs MD as well. The PSU running game has been pretty weak lately and this won't help it as Rucci is not nearly the run blocker Donkoh is.

@Dylan Callaghan-Croley , Would Williams now back up both OT positions, or will a player like Sexton move into an actual backup OT role? Also, is JB Walton, who has played both inside and at OT, still out or could he back up Rucci?
Considering that this is Ford's second significant knee injury in as many seasons, I wouldn't count on him. If he can make a contribution, then great. However, I believe that it would be folly for the staff to count on him being a significant contributor in 2025, and they have to plan accordingly. My guess is that his frame/weight probably puts too much stress on his knee ligaments; the play on which we got hurt, while he was being held, looked fairly innocuous.

The articles that I read about him indicate that the staff had him on a pitch count at the beginning of this season, and his injury in 2023 occurred at the beginning of August, so that doesn't bode well for him for 2025.

Saquon doing Saquon things

I love the Eagles chemistry. After both of Barkley's long runs the broadcast showed Hurts with this ear to ear grin, so happy for him. Barkley has made Hurts' job so much easier this year.

And then when Gainwell broke two tackles in the 4Q for a TD, Barkley was off the bench into the endzone bouncing around in Gainwell's face to congratulate him. It might be fake but from what I can see he's a really good teammate..
Nothing fake about Saquon. Brown said he's a phenomenal teammate, and I've heard that from the coaches and other players.
