Football Portal Watch: Big Ten players to monitor as potential transfers

Login to view embedded media Signing Birchmeier in the 2023 class was a major win for head coach James Franklin and the Penn State staff. He was one of the most heavily recruited prospects in that recruiting class and finished the rankings cycle at No. 40 in the Rivals250.

Since then, Birchmeier has played a total of 16 snaps in his college career and doesn’t seem to be within shouting distance of playing this season. He used his redshirt during the 2023 season and is using one of his four years of eligibility riding the bench this year while Cooper Cousins, J’ven Williams and Dominic Rulli seemingly pass him on the depth chart.

Login to view embedded media A four-star in the 2022 recruiting class, Cross looked like the next man up in a long line of impressive tight ends at Penn State. Instead, the Wisconsin native has been overshadowed by the likes of Tyler Warren, Theo Johnson, Brenton Strange, Khalil Dinkins and Luke Reynolds.

Cross has the talent to contribute but it’s hard to find playing time when competing with a tight end group like the one Penn State has assembled. He’s played just 24 snaps in his career with the Nittany Lions.

Why the double standard? (Joe vs. CJF in big games)

Everybody is talking about 1-13 against top-5 teams.

James is a good guy who does things the right way. Wins far more games than he loses. But he can't win the big games. As such, Penn State deserves better and it's time to move on.

That's the narrative.

And yet once we joined the Big Ten in 1993, Joe went 2-14 against top-5 teams -- the wins being @ Michigan in 1994 (a team that finished 8-4) and Arizona in 1999 (a team that went 6-6).

Joe lost MANY games to Ohio State. And yet he didn't have to face the Buckeyes of the Urban Meyer/Ryan Day era -- Buckeye teams more loaded than they were under Tressel.

So why the double standard?

CFP Byes

With the parity/lack of a true elite team this year, I think the byes may hurt more than they help whoever the 4 conference champs are.

It's not uncommon for NFL teams to struggle with rust coming off byes in the playoffs and thats just one week. Quarter finals are 12/31 and 1/1. The champ games are 12/7. That's 3 and a half weeks off against an opponent that's already shaken the rust off.

Franklin's pre-game talk

Informed sources have slipped the text to me: Men, I don't need to hype this game. This is why you came to Penn State...to play games like this on autumn afternoons...to step on a field where so many legendary players and a legendary coach stepped before you and won national championships. The world is saying you can't beat these guys. Your job today is to prove the world wrong...not for me...not for the university...not for 100,000 screaming fans...not for history...but for yourselves and a memory that will stay with you forever. Go out there and play this game the way I know you can play it.

Informed sources have also slipped me the final score: Penn State 24 Ohio State 19.

We knew the offense was better but not great

We all watched the games this year. We knew the offense had some fun new wrinkles and also knew they were necessary to make up for some talent deficiencies. Those ugly wins were not a sign of hidden greatness. Our best WR transferred for more money. We hired an OC willing to try anything to move the ball and It worked mostly. At some point against a team with balanced talent we were going to lose. This loss is as expected.

Bowl guru Jerry Palm projects us as #8 playoff seed

Link below. He sees our most likely opponent as Alabama at our place.

I think he's assuming that we win out to get that slot.

He also says there will be no 3-loss teams making the cut.

He thinks the chances of Clemson and Texas A&M took a bit hit yesterday:

At what point do we maybe give some reps to another WR like Tyseer Denmark?

Could our WR production really be much worse?

0 catches for Clifford
0 catches for Evans
1 catch for Fleming
2 catches for Tre

We have to try something because this just ain’t it right now. Some guys shine under the bright lights and I’d like to see some other guys like Tyseer get a shot.
