So is Busiello actually eligible to compete in the Spring semester? And if so, is he a better option than Verkleeran? I think both are tough kids that we are lucky to have on our roster, no matter how it all shakes out.

If Busiello is our beat 149 this year, that's an indictment of Verk, Gardner, and Pipher.

Busiello:
1. Is a true FR who
2. wrestled 138 last year against boys, thus
3. is up a weight this year against men, yet
4. has been away from D1 training and S&C for two months and
5. is not Zain or Nico or Hall or Morgan.

He likely would've been best served by shirting if he been here on Day 1. Missing the last 2 months of training has not improved him.

He might be good long term. Short term, he needs time in the room and the weight room.

i agree with what you have said. Not to prove you wrong but is there any knowledge he didn’t practice with the NLWC for the past 2 months. Also not to mention, he may not be the 4 aforementioned names above, but the one thing about wrestling is it is individual and dedication, if he has the drive to go out there and compete right away he would have given it 110%. Again i tend to agree with your statement

Regarding his being away: hard to disprove a negative, but there were no sightings or rumors of him being on campus until January. Not even when he was registered for Wilkes.

Not doubting his effort -- just that his best right now shouldn't be expected to be as good as those guys. He wasn't a top 3 overall recruit in his class -- and a lot of top 3 guys need time to flourish (as Morgan did).

** Shouldn't be expected -- except people are desperate for a savior, so reasonable expectations go out the window.

Whoever our 149 is, we'll need points from them if we want a shot vs Iowa. I believe Verkleeren has a higher ceiling at NCAAs than Gardner but tbh, that is likely me looking at their pre Penn State pedigrees, which shouldn't matter anymore.

IMO Pipher has the highest points ceiling of them all -- because of his crossface cradle.

Does he advance further than Verk or Gardner? IDK ... but 2 pts per pin racks up points much faster than decision wins.

This is a good point. He pinned Markus Hartman at the Black Knight invitational and he's definitely no slouch.

I think Verk has the best chance to get placement points because he gives himself a chance in just about any match.

Again totally agree with everything you had said. I don’t know his situation or maybe it was brought yo long ago and i missed it regarding his training or not with the NLWC. I may have assumed maybe he was training with them while he was awaiting his transfer process such as the Lees have trained there during there senior years of high school. Just some good ole wrestling banter and conspiracies as we hardly get any info out of the room lol

I'm not sure any of them have a great shot at placement points. To do so, you kinda have to beat 3-4 national qualifiers in one weekend.

Verk has a long list of "good losses" but has never beaten a national qualifier. Neither has Gardner. (In both cases, nobody who has ever qualified for NCAAs in their entire careers.) Could they go on a run? Sure ... but the evidence so far says it isn't likely.

Plus they're probably all 6th at best at B10s. (Martin is 5th or 6th, and he beat Berge last year.) So they're probably all lower seeds at nationals, meaning they'd have to face a top 12 or higher seed in Round 1.

PSU wins by 4 over OSU, Conaway with 3.5 points (1 fall) and Andrew Alton 2.5 points (1 fall). Without 2 falls from 2 non placers, PSU ties OSU.

Since we're talking 149, let's bring up one of the greatest 149 stories ever. James English ultimately didn't need to do as much as he did in 2014 but his AA run basically sealed the title for us that year.

I was super confident that Ed and DT would win, JE's points effectively gave us a cushion because Tony Nelson was the favorite over Gwiz at the time but English's unexpected run (which provided 6.5 points) offset that.

We won by 5.5 and Nelson would score 4 with a win, he wasn't bonusing anyone lol. Minnesota needed Ness to beat Dieringer effectively and I saw the chances of that happening as very low. Ultimately Nelson didn't win either but I was very confident going into that Saturday night. Like >95% sure we would win barring injuries (god forbid)

On top of that, he beat freaking Kendric Maple after everything he went through in his 6 years and that is why James English is a legend and that is why I love March.

Very glad that didn't happen -- we all know what happens when Ohio State gets tied.

I remember seeing him at the post finals social. He had this look on his face: somebody pinch me. It was priceless. Sadly I didn't have a smart phone at the time.
