157: Barraclaugh or Lee?

For me, Joe has been my biggest disappointment. I have trouble reconciling the Joe Lee who I saw as a RS Freshman with the Joe Lee we’ve seen the past 2 years.

I would guess Barraclough and Lee will be given the chance to prove they can score points in March. I think the preference is to redshirt a freshman. The question is whether Haines will prove too good to sit.

Not a question for me. Haines will force the coaches’ hands. He will prove too good to sit.

Barraclaugh will start. Unless he can prove he can get off bottom, score from neutral and be a .500 B1G wrestler, like others, I feel Haines will force the coaches hand.

Joe Lee might as well eat and go 165 again. I don’t see it mattering which weight he goes.

Wow. That's Cold. If you don't think Joe has a great chance to start at 157 or even beat out Facundo at 165....you have been watching far too much Penn State Wrestling. Oh wait

PS: I am really hoping....deep down.....that Joe comes out guns a blazing and we learn that after 2 years of nagging injuries he is wrestling lights out.

I think if anyone can give Facundo a challenge, it’s Matt. He did beat Julian Ramirez last year. He was supposedly the late bloomer of the brothers.

Oh, I would love to see Joe Lee or The Claw wrestling so well that Haines only wrestles opens.

But, as you’ve said, I’ve seen too much. I also saw what Haines did to very good people this year and can’t un-see it. With a full year of Casey Cunningham training under him, he’ll be breaking a lot of 157lb guys in half.

Part of the decision may be based on whether Haines is needed. With four returning champs and a 5th serious contender, he may be given the opportunity to redshirt.

No insider here, but I gotta believe Cael is bringing these guys in early so they dont need to take an official RS.

If he’s top dog in the room why would we sit him for another year? You really think he WANTS to sit again if he knows he SHOULD be starting?

I say run him and break that damn scoring record while we have the chance.

Matt obviously isn't a pushover, but he isn't challenging Facundo.
If everybody stays healthy the lineup is going to be what pretty much everybody already believes it is going to be.

Taylor redshirted. Ruth redshirted. Nolf redshirted. Nickal redshirted. Zain took a redshirt year. Nico took a redshirt year.

Among that list, who wasn’t best at their weight the year they shirted? I come up with only Nickal.

There’s more to think about than who is best in the room.

I hate holding a kid like Haines out until later in the year , then they have trouble getting enough matches to get good seeds in the Big Ten and NCAA. If he is our best 157 he should wrestle the whole year, if he is not he should redshirt. I'm sure they already know he is the best 157, don't need half a season to figure that out!

I'd say it depends on their goals..
If they want to be an undefeated 4x champ, they are probably best off to sit if the team doesn't need them.

I think Cael will see how the lineup looks without Haines and if it can score outside of our 4 champs and Kerk. If Bartlett adjusts to 141 and Van Ness and Facundo make jumps and those 3 look like AA guys, I think we redshirt him. If it doesn’t look like we have any likely AAs, I think Cael summons him.

I don’t want to put undue hype but I’m not sure we had any prospects like Haines before who comfortably beat NCAA competition including dominating a Top 20 guy as a high school senior. Physicality alone usually makes a huge difference. Don’t forget Levi is very young for his grade as well (he was cadet eligible as a junior) I remember Nick Lee wrestling a NQ level guy as a senior in high school (Zach Synon, who was Jaydin Eierman’s backup), he got absolutely worked. He was down 7-0 I think then got pinned.

I think freshman Zain might be a good comparison. There will be a lot of close matches but he can hang with anyone if he goes as well.

Assuming we have a dual with Minnesota, Nebraska, or Michigan this year, the coaches can throw Haines out there and see how he does against a previous AA. No loss of RS.

I think he’ll also get sent to the Scuffle, etc., and likely face some AA-caliber guys before the B1G dual season even starts.

There’s no one at 157 that I think is beyond Haines after a year in the room. Carr and Monday both went up, and O’Connor is coming off ACL surgery. 157 is a pretty weak weight overall this year. Unlike Zain’s freshman year, there’s no Logan Steiber sort of guy at his weight.

No way Lee sees 157 again IMO.

I think we see Haynes by new years, until then an improved Claw.

We all seem to agree even though we probably don't need him this year, Haynes gives us injury insurance. Both Kerk and Howard have injury history and I will be content with over doing it rather than protect a hypothetical Haynes' extra year, 4 years from now.

Everybody you listed took their redshirt in one of the two years the Lions were not going to win a team title.
Two of the examples you listed competed as true freshmen on teams that won a title.

If the staff thinks they are good enough to win a title, more likely than not they are putting their best team forward. Especially if the choice at a particular weight is obvious.

Who is going to wrestle 125, 157 and/or 165 (all, good health depending) is already known, but it does make for decent off season chatter.

Do you think Facundo would have been our best 165 lber last year?

Do you think SVN bumping up to 157 would have been our best 157lber last year?

And wasn’t a national title at least in question as we lost Big Tens to Michigan and until Iowa suffered a ton of injuries?

All I am saying is that there is more to the redshirt / not redshirt decision than who is best at the weight.

SVN wasn't a 157 pounder. My guess is there wasn't a ton of separation between Facundo and Edsell.
As far as lining up talent to compete, 2010 and 2015 are completely different animals than last year or any other year during Cael's run.

I just wish they’d wrestle Greco in the fall, Folkstyle in the winter, Sumo in the spring and Freestyle in the summer so we had better things to discuss / argue over.

I seem to recall that Aurelius Dunbar was a pretty highly regarded recruit. I think he is at 157. Yet I have heard next to nothing about him. Any insight?

RBY, Hall and Nick Lee did not RS, so it is not out of the realm of possibly. Just like in those years we really didn't have solid options at those weights. I think also depends on what the wrestler wants to do.

My thoughts exactly. If he’s the best guy, and I’m going to assume he is, then 157 is ripe for the picking.

I too hope that Joe comes out tough and smart. I’m led to believe that his issues have been more about maturity and much less about physical issues. I think it most likely that he would have left the program over the past 4 months if Cael & Co had given up on him. Hopefully we will see a new Joe Lee who competes smart and gets a chance to start.
