Ohio State dual thread - Feb 14

Outside PSU fandom, the overwhelming majority had Mendez as a favorite. Strangely many were ignoring that Beau should have won the title and were just looking at their matches this year (Mendez hammering most opponents and Beau winning most close) and Mendez’ freestyle season. The Vombaur match was the first sign of a crack in Mendez this year.
Given his two bad matches were in proximity can we rule out he’s been a little sick?

I didn't see the Vombaur match, but is it possible that perhaps people are sleeping on Vombaur? Or that he didn't wrestle poorly against Bartlett, he simply lost? I suppose it's possible that something's been wrong with Mendez, but I'm more inclined to think that Vombaur gave him a hell of a match and that Beau simply beat him when they were both healthy and well.

IF that's what he said, that's why some people don't buy the constant chatter that Ryan's a great guy, great coach, etc.. Look, the only responsible answer from a coach is, "our guys didn't do what they needed to do. Neither one scored a takedown (or got close), etc. Give credit to the PSU guys who did what they had to do to win in our arena". I hate the "our guy is better and he wrestled better, but an average ref screwed them".
Something Brands is very good to point out. He says often our guys need to score points. He doesn't make excuses because you know, excuses are for.........

I agree with this since when has Mendez really looked that much better than Beau. Beau very nearly won the finals last year.

Even in the latest match I thought Mendez looked better, maybe it was me not wanting to be disappointed with the outcome if he won.
I think this match will always be a series of moves to score like this..

Vombuar has looked impressive this year and bo/jesse match would be a 1 TD match almost every time I believe.

by this time of yr most guys are sick or injured etc etc what are the injuries Teemer and Feldman both looked fine to me if you really hurt sit it out!dont make excuses

McCrone took top because he knew it was gods only chance.
More coaches should have their wrestlers take their more advantageous position rather than automatically choosing down. You see it all the time where wrestlers take the down position and then get ridden like a mule or turned. McCrone and his coaches made the wise choice.

I have gotten in many debates with coaches who are my good friends over this subject. One in particular who insists that giving up the free point is heresy.

There's something to be said for forcing a kid into adversity for learning moments or giving your wrestler a feel for an opponent's strength when you know they will face off again with higher stakes.

But when the stakes are high, if your wrestler is not taking his most advantageous position - or at least his position of least disadvantage - he is not putting himself in the best position to win.

Our coaches (not PSU) just did this last night in a district final, but it was the first time our guy had faced the other guy (who is a beast on top and wins on the mat) and they are assuredly going to meet next week with higher stakes. Good strategy last night (despite dropping the match after being up after the first period), but next week (and if they meet again at states) I expect a different strategy.
