Ohio State dual thread - Feb 14

I haven't seen this brought up, but does anyone else think the ref slapped the mat pretty quickly on Luke's pin. He probably would've given up a pin eventually, but his shoulders touch the mat as he rolled through. They were not down for a "count" as I believe to be the rule. Am I wrong on this? I'm not a former wrestler and not a ref or coach, just an observer.
I thought the same thing. Supposed to be 1 second. Seems a lot of falls are called fairly quick in college. Ed Scott got a fall called on him at Nationals during a roll through.

I was picking my son up from college, he's home for the long weekend, so I had to watch the recording of this dual. I peeked at the results so I was prepared for 125. No worries there, we will just have an even more locked in "take no prisoners" LL moving forward. Obviously the match of the night was BB's win. I have watched several times and I want to say that BB was truly in charge of that match from beginning to end in every aspect:
1) Physically he looked stronger and with a slight conditioning edge
2) He imposed his will on every situation (which is speaking volumes because there were a LOT of situations) a match like this can only be wresltled by an elite wrestler from an elite room, with our coaches.
3) He got in on the only deep shots of the match and won or broke even on every scrample.
4) As always his composure was impeccable but it cast a bad light on Mendez who looked like he was struggling a little to find his footing.
5) If you only had this match to go by 54/45 advantage BB going into the conference tournament 🔥
Beau appeared to be completely in charge as the match wore on. My favorite TV moment was the start of 3rd period, Beau ahead 4-0, Mendez had already positioned himself on bottom, waiting for Beau to go on top. Covelli Center was noisy with the dong-dong-dong sounding. The TV showing a close-up of Beau, who at that point motioned to the ref (Reynaldo Santiago, by the way) he couldn't hear. Beau stood by for a good 10 secs or more waiting for the dong-dong-dong to end before he took his position on top. You'll probably say anyone would have reacted the same to the noise, but it seemed like a veteran move on the part of Beau.

What I think I see from a lot of refs at the college level is to be quick with the call if the back exposure has been sustained — i.e., on an initial exposure, they more often wait for a mental count of a second or so with both shoulders down . . . but if a guy has been fighting off or rolling back-and-forth, it becomes more of a touch-pin the instant both shoulders touch.

Of course, calling a quick pin on initial exposure is probably limited by the time it takes refs to get into a position to see what’s going on down there in the first place.

Not to mention that I think you could easily make the argument that the reversal never should have been called (or that if it WAS called, that they should have given Davis a subsequent reversal (although I know that's not how the reviews work)).

Because Davis had the leg trapped between the cradle (and he immediately rolled through), the reversal call was definitely questionable - that's why Cael threw the challenge brick.

Folk is one full count (i.e., one full second) with both shoulder blades touching mat. Free is instantaneous when both blades touch. Was hard to tell in Luke's match as the angle B1G was giving was from the diametric wrong side. It did look like the pin was called as soon as both blades touched, not after a full one-count, but hard to say given the camera angle.

Different angle on btn showed what I saw as an instantaneous touch and one shoulder was off a few inches when fall was called.

I saw the interview w Coach Ryan where he said the Ohio State (I hate OSU as the abbrev) kids outwrestled their opponents at 133 and 141, but things didnt go their way.
I can understand his frustration at 133, but think he was just making excuses at 141 after his earlier comments.

IF that's what he said, that's why some people don't buy the constant chatter that Ryan's a great guy, great coach, etc.. Look, the only responsible answer from a coach is, "our guys didn't do what they needed to do. Neither one scored a takedown (or got close), etc. Give credit to the PSU guys who did what they had to do to win in our arena". I hate the "our guy is better and he wrestled better, but an average ref screwed them".

Yeah, it was quick; appeared to be a "touch" fall as soon as the second shoulder contacted the mat. But not an egregiously bad call IMO, and like you say it would have been difficult for Lilledahl to avoid the pin much longer.

Tan Tom says some stupid sh!t occasionally, but at least he usually says what he really feels. In this case he was looking to give his guys all the credit he can, even the guys who got teched. While I don't agree with his take that Mendez out-wrestled Bartlett, he also threw out a few complements to PSU guys.

In the overall spectrum of Tan Tom douchery, this interview barely moved the needle.

Maybe Beau should talk to Rick Sprngfield about making a new song titled ' I wish that I had Jesse’s skills!'
I took a stab at 'Jesse's skills'
Jesse's not my friend
Jesse's a big threat of mine
But lately Tom Ryan's on Twitter talking bout Jesse's skills and a 2025 Natty and I want to make it mine!!

Oh Tom's looking at him with those dead lift eyes,
He's giving him a black shirt I just know it,
He's keeping him in his tanning bed late late at night.

Oh I wish that I had Jesse’s skills!!

I didn't watch the video because the title is so absurd, but if you're going to play the game that I presume he plays, you may as well also make a video entitled, "How close was PSU to blanking tOSU?". I mean really, how often does Luke Lilledahl get decked if he wrestles McCrone ten times or 100 times? Who wins 157 if Kasak wrestles? Who wins HWT if Kerk wrestles? There you have it, PSU just skunked the Bucknuts.

Exactly. Hopium only goes one way.

I am still not a big fan of NIL the way it's playing it today coupled with the Portal that I like even less.

Fortunately for us Cael is the very best at recruiting, development and also best at keeping the kids happy despite the competition within, the distractions, and the temptations.
Now bound, the NIL/portal marriage will never be annulled. Filthy-rich boosters will gladly look to spend discretionary wealth on pride projects like a favorite college team. Young athletes and families will always consider windfalls unimagined just years ago.
You may fret but are right. Cael seems uniquely positioned to meet challenges raised solely by NIL/portal (i.e., opponents getting short-term better via mercenaries). The best weapons are HS recruiting, individual and team success, strength of RTC, and culture. Cael is skilled in all of them. On top of that, some hired guns may approach the valley on their own.

I am just happy that he wasn't so quick with Davis. Definitely close. Did both shoulders touch for just an instant? I am not sure, but...

Tom Ryan is a good coach and classy person.
No excuses and very honest . The video is good .
I love listening to good honest coaches, since I was never in a high level of competition it helps with understanding the mind set if what actually goes on in the room without to much info getting out. Ryan, Dresser, Taylor and swartz, yes even manning I like listening to them and what they have to say. They are all good people and I can understand why there guys go all in for them.

I used to thunk of brands like this But these last couple of years it does seem that desperation is seeping in and the lights are going dim. With all their mistakes with there guys not getting seeding right, pointlessly burning red shirts, letting bad energy in the room. who knows maybe they can still turn it around. For the first time in a couple of years they finally caught a break (maybe) with basset.

Dude, knock it off — it took me a solid week to get that frigging song out of my head after it was playing at my grocery store last month. Then I see your earlier post, and it’s back in my head instantly. I managed an escape, but now I’m taken down again with your reattack. You’re killing me. Have a heart! 😂

That has to reflect poorly on the coaching staffs. Your guys are more skillful and outwrestled their opponents yet they were ill prepared to win. Gosh darn poor coaching then.

@creamery freak's reply (maybe):

I've done everything for you
You've done nothing for me

And I said if you had everyone it's not close.
It was "closer" because Luke got pinned and he was favored. Going in Ohio at was favored at 157 and Hwt. So it was closer than it should've been due to Luke getting pinned . With your full line up you were favored in all 10.
Wrong! No way Beau was favored over Mendez.

Mendez was ranked higher, but I suspect most people would have called that match a push or a toss-up before it happened. I certainly did.
Outside PSU fandom, the overwhelming majority had Mendez as a favorite. Strangely many were ignoring that Beau should have won the title and were just looking at their matches this year (Mendez hammering most opponents and Beau winning most close) and Mendez’ freestyle season. The Vombaur match was the first sign of a crack in Mendez this year.

Huh??? Didn't Beau lose the last three matches (B1Gs NCAAs and All-Star Tounament) between the two? Mendez definitely went in the favorite.

Yeah, before the Vombaur match, I considered Mendez in the short list of favorites for the Hodge (with Mesenbrink, Ramos, and Starocci). A week later, he’s out of the running completely.

My opinion is thats a toss up and no one is actually the favorite. So me saying all 10 wasn't correct. 9 and a toss up. Now are you guys happy 🤣😜
no and we never will be.

Man I loved Shumate when he was in high school especially around his sophomore year. He was just destroying kids but he sure hasn’t panned out in college. He has a losing record right now
There was a like a 6 month period when he looked like the next transcendent guy and then fell off a cliff.

Ohio State has recruited a few kids who fit the "developed early and was stronger than everyone in high school" mold
