I was in disbelief as I watched the McKenna/Retherford match. I gave McKenna about a 30% chance at best, and I am a big fan of his. I just re-watched the match and here are my match notes:
*disclaimer: I don't possess the most technical knowledge, esp. in freestyle, so may be describing some positions incorrectly*
P1:
- whistle blows
- lots of feints and some hand fighting from both guys the first 15 seconds or so
- McKenna changes levels and gets real low, catches Zain's left leg below the knee with a very well-timed shot as Zain is taking a step back with his right leg. McKenna is able to get to the left ankle off this shot and converts the takedown after a short scramble. McKenna works for a gut wrench for about 20 seconds but no cigar, wrestlers are brought to their feet
-about a minute in, the ref stops the action and tells Zain something. can't tell if it's for hands to the face or to be more active. lots of feints and some hand fighting from both guys
- Zain takes a really nice low single. He finds both his hands around McKenna's left ankle. McKenna whizzers, gets his hips out in front, wraps Zain's chest and gets out. Excellent display of defense. I thought Zain would finish that for sure. No takedown.
- McKenna's feints are really getting Zain to react. McKenna takes a slick low single/ankle pick to Zain's right ankle and gets a great grab on it. brings zain to his butt. Excellent defense by Zain as he gets his hips out. No takedown.
- another low shot by McKenna to the right ankle again. Zain stuffs it immediately this time. Nice defense. Stalemate.
- Zain takes a sloppy shot, McKenna completely side steps it
- McKenna gets to that low single on Zain's right side and gets the right ankle AGAIN with just a few seconds to go. Zain defends and McKenna can't finish. Period over.
P1 thoughts: McKenna leads 2-0, and he's looking as slick as I've ever seen him. Zain seems to have no size advantage and McKenna looks to have negated a strength advantage with his dynamic ability. Zain controls the center of the mat with his strength, but he's reacting to all of McKenna's feints and too late on Mckenna's shots. As a result, McKennna is getting off very, very clean shots.. Excellent defense from both wrestlers.
P2:
- Zain starts very aggressive, but doesn't take any shots. A lot of hard hand fighting and pushing from Zain
- about 40 seconds in, Zain gets an excellent low single to McKenna's left ankle. gets both his hands on that ankle again like he did in the first period. It's a scramble. He gets behind McKenna, but Mckenna whips over his right leg above Zain's head and finds a tight waist of sorts. McKenna ROLLS Zain over-- McKenna appears to give up 2 but also exposes Zain for 2. Retherford finds himself on top in par terre. McKenna leads 4-3. Nothing, so the ref stands them up
- Zain gets McKenna out of position and finds that left ankle AGAIN. the scramble is nearly deja vu, but this time McKenna doesn't give up 2 as he rolls/exposes Zain over. Stalemate is called. McKenna up 6-3. Zain's corner challenges. Challenge successful, Zain is awarded 2. McKenna leads 6-5. 45 seconds to go
- Zain knows time is short; McKenna is playing defense again. Zain takes 2 sloppy shots and nothing. A faint from Zain gets McKenna to slip near the edge of the mat. Zain bull rushes McKenna as Mckenna gets to his knees. Zain pinches McKenna's head, but McKenna controls Zain's right elbow and DUMPS Zain to the side. McKenna slides around and spins Zain around and down to his butt. That's 2 TD for McKenna. McKenna 8-5. Time expires.
P2 thoughts: Holy shit. The two nearly identical scrambles killed nearly two minutes. Zain took all the shots this period--but he had to as he trailed the entire period. Excellent defense by McKenna in the scramble situations. Pretty unbelievable that Zain didn't finish clean as he was in very deep a couple times, and I've never known McKenna to be this good of a scrambler.
Overall thoughts. Wow. just wow. McKenna completely elevated his game in all positions, and especially in scrambles. He was simply slicker than Zain in the first period. He brought the perfect game plan for the second period and executed it as he scored 6 points off of Zain's 3 shots.
Hats off to Zain. I thought his strength and positioning would negate McKenna's offense, but McKenna proved me wrong. McKenna was the more dynamic wrestler, and that seemed to make all the difference.
