2022 Recruiting Class Thread

I
I read an article where he was plaing MLB @ a recent 7 vs 7 on PITT's practice field and showed strong cover skills as well as strong receiving skills. No doubt he has great athleticism and should, after a redshirt year, become a major contributor. Also plans to enroll in January.
That would make more sense. Could play a pass rush OLB position with his athleticism......probably a better fit than DE.

For those interested, they ranked Allar 15th (out of 20).

I wouldn't sweat it.

Maalik Murphy may have had a good camp. Don't know -- I wasn't there. But that guy has a LOT of work to do before he's an impact-level QB. Has a huge arm......but his ability to actually throw with accuracy is a giant question mark.

I'd take a half dozen kids (or more) on that list over him at the next level.

Just one example.

Only so much you can tell from a bunch of drills in shorts and a t-shirt.

The big thing is the "IT" factor. Will these kids be able to keep their composure when chased by much bigger and faster defenders than they have ever seen in high school. I imagine all of these kids have a good arm.

Yep. And you get a good sense for that in their HS action, but even then.......the college game is just so much faster. Some kids make the natural progression and adjust. Others don't.

It's why the rankings probably won't change dramatically based on these results. The rankings services -- particularly on QBs -- are going to focus more on in-game action and a combination of camps over the course of the summer. Casual fans and the social media hype machine put too much stock in a 3-day camp that fails to replicate game action.

Elite 11 is a good place to check out the top prospects and how they handle the drills. Allar looked good by all accounts. But that's about it.

Definitely needs to add some weight to be an effective multi-faceted DE in the Big Ten. Good potential as a speed rusher off the end, though.

His profile weight is incorrect. He’s up quite a bit. Not a stretch he’s 250 in the fall of 22

I hear you but can't help but be a bit disappointed after all the fanfare about Allar from the first day. He was hyped to be the 2nd best performer from day 1 and now is 15th. Seems like a dramatic drop. Any insight on that or is the whole camp with how they performed essentially irrelevant?

Lol at getting disappointed given kids that have or have not panned out that went to this camp.

SI had him low from the jump. They have been the outlier. Many other sources have had Allar at various spots in the top 5 throughout but SI had him in the teens from the beginning. For some reason SI just doesn't like Allar and that's fine. A lot of others do.

And he seems to be a legit 6'5" with the frame to eventually have a Courtney Brown build..........

Hope the positive vibes he got while on his PSU visit are still with him........

Tomorrow and Monday will be the busiest 48 hours in the recruiting commitment business this year to date.

In addition to the three DL prospects we'll likely be adding, several 5* kids are announcing decisions tomorrow and several other elite level kids with announcements tomorrow and Monday. Will be interesting to see who the big winners are.

Also saw a clip from 7v7 where the WR dropped a great toss by Allar that might’ve gone for 6. FWIW

SI knows nothing about recruiting. They had him at tenth after the first day. They promote the kids committed to the “Blue Bloods”. There is no analysis with Sports Illustrated. Again, they have become an irrelevant media entity, so they are just looking for clicks.

Just reading the review, the top 4 were the QBs on the 2 teams in the finals (guessing you split reps in it? Anybody else familiar with the format?).

A little reluctant to post this out of concern for our sensitive fans who might get their hopes up...

His has been a weird recruitment. Was sky high, all-world last year. Was thought to be a heavy OSU lean. Then showed really poorly at camps and fell off. Big knock on him was athleticism and inability to drop into coverage.

But I guess he has rebounded fairly well, and is getting a lot of interest from LSU and Florida. He has OSU and Alabama on the list, but I'm not sure if either would even accept his commitment.

So, not sure what you're gonna get with Shawn Murphy.

Do you think we get both Sutton and Singleton? I don't have a great feeling about Sutton, hopefully I am wrong.

He’s a good case for why underclassman shouldn’t be ranked in order and maybe just generically given stars. Easier to move them around that way

This is helpful context, thanks.

I will never claim to have any inside information, but merely reading the tea leaves, I think Singleton to PSU is pretty clear. Sutton........not sure. Probably leaning to UGA based on what folks at UGA and Alabama think.

Regarding other targets (other than the 3 DL we'll probably get), I think Aamil Wagner probably ends up at OSU even though they're closing in on a few OTs they like more. Gunner Givens probably VT......but tough to say. He's another guy whose stock has fallen a bit, so it's hard to tell who among his offers are really pushing. Sabb = Clemson/SEC. Enai White = OSU/SEC. Cam Miller is another PSU vs. VT matchup.......probably PSU? Keenan Nelson and Cristian Driver are probably PSU. Moses Walker is realistic, and we can probably get KJ Winston and Andre Roye if we want them.

If we end up with Durant, Artis, Fearbry, Singleton, Nelson, Driver, Cam Miller, Winston, and Roye, that's 23 commits. That would probably give us a class ranked in the 10-15 range. Would need somebody like DDS -- or multiple guys to get huge rankings bumps -- to land higher, I'd think.

Would be one of the best classes we've had for QB/RB/WR as a group. OL especially (and secondary to a lesser extent) remain areas for improvement. DL is not elite, but solid.

Wiltfong just CB'ed Zane Durant to PSU. Also CB'ed Kojo Antwi (the top WR in SEC country) to OSU. That would be a big upset -- long believed to be a UGA vs. Texas A&M race.

Brian Hartline's gotta go.

I'll take Saunders over the field. Hartline is a good recruiter but I like our guys and our NFL receivers are more productive than O$U's.

Right there with the OSU QB who slipped from No. 1 down to No. 6.
I think this is and the Luther Richesson (#71 QB from Tenn) are the big stories of the elite 11.

Ewers was not just the #1 QB, he was the #1 overall player with a perfect 1.000 rating heading into the event and now he isn't even a top 5 QB. That is even with half of the elite 11 ranking being from his prior film evaluation so his performance at the event mathematically couldn't have even been top 10.

Then this kid Richesson comes from out of nowhere to finish #5 ahead of Ewers? That's making the most of your opportunities.

As for Allar, finishing #8 when he was ranked the #11 QB is obviously pretty good. And with 50% of that #8 finish being his #11 film eval, his performance at just the event alone might have even been top 5.

Another interesting Penn St recruiting aspect from the event was both Flowers (commit) and Nelson Jr (PSU lean) picking off these elite QBs including Ewers.

I'm not going to even entertain SI's rankings from the event because they aren't even a recruiting service. Let me know if they print a swimsuit issue.

It’s better than getting burned over and over at the last camp, but I’m just not sure it was a great play. Not sure what to make of him at this point.

Looks pretty good to me. He's in tight coverage and undercuts the route on a ball slightly behind the receiver and takes it to the house.

I think that last camp getting burned was mostly not keeping up with Saunders and to be fair, no one did.
