2022 Southern scuffle

I saw the movie
Me too. Gospel truth. Myself and a few friends went to our first ( and my only) porn movie(s) It was indeed "Deep Throat" and "Behind the Green Door". We made constant jokes through the first movie ( Deep Throat ) and went nuts with obvious jokes during the "Coming Attractions" and were thrown out of the theatre. The usher said the other patrons "Couldn't Concentrate" because of our behavior. We were escorted out. You cannot make this up :). Well....I guess you could make it up......but it is 100% fact. We laughed....A LOT :)

In Berlinsville, which I would think is either in the Northampton or Northern Lehigh School District there is a Drive-in movie theater called Becky's that showed porn movies in the the late 70s early 80s on weekends. A few times we would migrate from Bangor and just have a blast.
We would load up a buddy's van with a couple of New Jersey legal bought cases and anywhere from six to eight of us would pack the van. Sometimes it was coed. It was just a fun night of laughs and jokes. Just to clarify, my classmates and friends didn't become degenerates from the situation. It was just a harmless passage of us growing up.
I don't mean to be nonchalant about the drinking but back in that day it wasn't looked at as it is today. You wonder if we're better or worst with the current laws and attitude. The drug epidemic is very real and lethal. We drank beer and tried to use common sense on who should drive before the term designated driver was used.

100% facts:
1. I had a student named Crystal Lear. If you guessed her middle name was Chanda....you win a dinner :)
2. I had a student named Richard Dick. Most of his friends called him Dick Squared :)
3. Sadly... I had a brother & sister student whose last name was Boob. They named the boy Louie but they named the girl Iva. I kid you not :( There is more to the story that you will have to ask me about in person.
4. I had a student named Peter Long. On the first day of school I always read the names off to check attendance etc. The computer sheet always had last name and then first. I was reading quickly and announced for "Long Peter".....crap. Lots of laughs. I had him 9th period. When I red-faced apologized he just said "It's Ok...that was the 7th time today" Great cool kid :)
My dads former biz partner was bob minor. He was a retired army major.

If he makes the semis, he'll likely have beaten at least one top 10-15ish guy to do it. The Scuffle should be pretty stacked at 165 this year.
Yesir, that’s why I asked. Would have to think if he can beat 1-2 top 12ish type guys he would score some points in Detroit. Can’t imagine he’s not wanting to be let out of the stable.

Hoping to have an update on entries today.. Why does this stuff have to be top secret. LoL

Come on man, Ok St had originally planned to send its starters. That was never the plan for PSU. You know that. Therefore it’s total BS by YOU. Period.
isn’t this a distinction without a difference? both teams aren’t sending their starters to a tough tournament. coaches have the right to decide what’s best for their team. smith probably decided the higher risk of exposure wasn’t worth it for his starters. cael decided to benefits of a tough christmas tourney don’t outweigh the cons.

and if it’s not because of covid, who cares? they’ve been wrestling very well. maybe he doesn’t think they need that measuring stick right now and would benefit more from the rest? cael has been on the forefront of this load management approach. can’t get mad at other teams for recognizing the benefits.

No, it’s not. The difference is that Smith changed course from his original plans which is not a load management issue. Cael’s guys wrestled some tough duals at Collegiate Duals so he didn’t want to put them through a big tournament less than a week before the start of a packed Big Ten schedule. Ok St’s last dual was a cakewalk vs Utah Valley on 12/20, and that was their first dual since 12/17. Not a load management issue at all. He specifically said it was too risky to send his starters, but was ok with sending backups. Apples and oranges to what Cael did.

Tough field, for sure. However, IMO, the only guys who would be huge favorites over Facundo are Griffith and O’Toole. I think he’s fully capable of beating all the others. Perhaps that’s a bit rosy, but that’s how I see it.

it is less risky to not send the starters. if he doesn’t think the scuffle has a huge benefit, why would he risk one of his starters getting sidelined for 2 weeks? especially if he likes where his team is at. will this totally prevent one of his starters from getting it? no, but it does lower the chance and that’s his calculation to make.

i don’t begrudge any coach that doesn’t send his guys to a tough christmas tourney. that schedule model is dying. cael hasn’t done it since 2019. iowa wasn’t planning on sending starters to midlands.

i just don’t get being mad at this. if it’s good for their team, then it’s the right call. if it’s bad, then they’ll pay for it and that should make you happy.

As it's been explained to me Edsell and Facundo are very close in the room. A deep run by Facundo into the Scuffle, with a few wins over some ranked guys is the only thing that's gonna burn that shirt and even then it still may not happen. Edsell lost a few close matches in Florida to some ranked guys, he can make some adjustments and still has time to improve *These factors shouldn't surprise anyone, it's all on Facundo at this point...looking forward to seeing his development.

Agreed. I think Facundo beats a guy like Ramirez most of the time and Weber 3 or 4 out of 10. By the time the event happens, he'll have almost doubled his time in the room since his last competition. His learning curve will have been exponential. If he's healthy, I think we should see significant improvements.

Obviously it all depends on how the brackets shake out but I'd like to see him get a crack at one or both of them.

Absolutely agree. He has beaten Ramirez multiple times including this past summer I believe. I really hope he gets a chance against someone like Luke Weber to see where he stands. I think we will be pleasantly surprised

David Evans might do better than people expect.

Also, does he have gray in his beard? I kept on seeing him on the bench during the Collegiate Duals and thought he was one of the coaches every time.

9th grade, on the way to A-basin, Denver theatre. The story of O was the second film but it might have green door, it's been a few years..Same theatre the guy in front of pee wee Herman got shot in the back of the head.

I wish both Facundo and Edsel were entered. Not a perfect compare but it would be interesting to see how both progress through the same tourney (Shak & Cassar). I don't think the shirt gets pulled unless he were to beat two top 10 guys which implies he makes it to the finals. I think that is too tall an order, just yet. Even at that, Cael may think we have enough points in Edsel. I would rather Facundo gets the full year off and then he and SVN will terrorize next year.

PS - tempted to sign up for Flo just to watch our guys,..... not! Maybe someday Flo will recognize the value of a two tiered pricing strategy and allow PPV or monthly. Lower revenue per head on average but a much broader base. Until then, I am out.

The real question is On What were they concentrating? 🤔

You are trying to rationalize with someone who believes everything Cael does is the correct way and if another coach does something different with his team then he is wrong.

What do people expect?

If he makes the podium, he has likely beaten a few NQ-type guys - there are a handful not ranked by FLO.
IMO, that would be a step up from the competition he has faced so far (not counting the default win over Lajoie and a couple of wins over decent tFr very early in the season). Does he beat a guy like Spann? I guess we'll see. I'd like to be wrong, but I think we are getting our hopes up over some early-season tournaments without much in the terms of competition. If he makes the podium, that would be a big step up. Meredith is here as well, I haven't seen him in a while. I know this has been two years running where they wanted him at 125, but it seems as if that is not in the cards.

157 - I'd like to see one of our guys make the podium here. I'm pretty skeptical. If we can't get on the podium here, qualifying is going to be a tall order.

165 - Facundo - top 3 and we're looking at our 165 starter in the postseason. I don't see him lower than 6th or 7th here.

184 - I could see Ball making a run at the bottom of the podium - field is not a killer at this weight.

197 - Beard should win this if he wants to challenge to start this year. He's going to be seeded high and even his quarter should be a comfortable win. Elam is very tough, but a win that he needs to be in the conversation with Dean.

285 - It will be interesting to see how Seth does coming off football. On paper, he can win it. Maybe I'd give the edge to Fernandez, Elam, and Harris are ok, but I'd lean to Seth if he was in wrestling shape. But he's been pretty inactive for a while now.

You are trying to rationalize with someone who believes everything Cael does is the correct way and if another coach does something different with his team then he is wrong.

Cael Sanderson has been a head coach for 15 seasons. He has a career dual meet winning pct of .878. His teams have won 8 team championships, 11 team podium finishes and he’s coached 29 individual champions and they didn’t even hold the tournament in one of those 15 years.

NLWC athletes he coached won 5 Olympic and 4 World medals in 2021.

So yes - many of us live our fandom under the impression that he coaches smarter than other coaches and the folks that post on this forum about how he doesn’t understand how to win at-large selections for his wrestlers.

I don’t see the big deal about what Smith, Cael, or Brands do about their holiday season tournaments, whether planned or otherwise. It isn’t one coach’s duty to provide good matches for another coach’s wrestlers (especially that latter coach’s reserves).

As for what fans may think is owed them, well, I wouldn’t — as a PSU fan — criticize another coach about how he wants to manage his schedule this winter. It’s not like fans didn’t miss out on what would have been an extra dual to salivate over in Iowa vs PSU last week (had certain coaches not set advance conditions to preclude it). 🤷‍♂️
