2022 Southern scuffle

I don’t see the big deal about what Smith, Cael, or Brands do about their holiday season tournaments, whether planned or otherwise. It isn’t one coach’s duty to provide good matches for another coach’s wrestlers (especially that latter coach’s reserves).

As for what fans may think is owed them, well, I wouldn’t — as a PSU fan — criticize another coach about how he wants to manage his schedule this winter. It’s not like fans didn’t miss out on what would have been an extra dual to salivate over in Iowa vs PSU last week (had certain coaches not set advance conditions to preclude it). 🤷‍♂️
Agree with you 100 percent. When big matches don’t happen and fans bitch, I get it but also understand it’s the coaches job to get the most out of his guys come March. I think Brands is playing his hand perfectly so far when it comes to his team. I was actually hoping they would all wrestle with very little time off but slow playing Kem and Spencer is for the best imo. In fact, I’d probably sit Marinelli a match or two as well. Hell, Eireman too.

Yeah, the dual didn’t end up happening, but I had a hunch Brands would sit Marinelli vs. Mizzou. I’m shocked Young hasn’t been rested, yet.

Maybe it’s just a case of seeing what I want to see, but it seems like some of the Iowa seniors are wrestling “tired” so far.

People are changing the argument and missing the point entirely. It has nothing to do with managing the workload of wrestlers, nor what any fan wants to see. My original post was that Smith was deeming the Scuffle too risky for starters but not so for backups. That's it. Period. Cael not sending starters was completely irrelevant as it was never his plan. As McSorely first shared in the tweet below, Smith changed his plan from sending his starts to not sending them. There is no debate about this. It's a simple fact. Whether someone is ok with this or not, doesn't change the fact. End of story and it's my last post on this topic because there is absolutely no debate here, whether anyone thinks so or not.

Some may have changed the argument because the original gripe about Smith’s decision was dumpster thread material, and so they tried to turn it into wrestling discussion. How it then went to porn is beyond me, but whatevs. Anything other than c-word debates is better than c-word debates at this point.

And we got it back to what we’re supposed to be discussing here — Iowa wrestling.

I know it was free but Facundo has wins over Hamiti and Ramirez from last summer. Both struggled to take him down. Similarly, Truax didn't take Facundo down (did push him out 4 times) That's a common theme for people wrestling Alex, it's hard to take him down. The issue with Alex is he'll likely be in 1-1 matches against the #40 guy (like the Maryland kid) as well as the #5 guy. I think the coaches see Alex jumping levels if he can stay the year on redshirt and just focus on offensive development rather than be thrust into competitive where every point matters.

Alex and Beau getting the board beat down for lack of scoring may be the death of the board

Do i recall correctly Willie saying beau was undersized at the Collegiate Duals?
I gotta think since he gives a few pounds to opponents that he compensates for that in his game plan (ie keeping a close match so that he can strike last)

Cael Sanderson has been a head coach for 15 seasons. He has a career dual meet winning pct of .878. His teams have won 8 team championships, 11 team podium finishes and he’s coached 29 individual champions and they didn’t even hold the tournament in one of those 15 years.

NLWC athletes he coached won 5 Olympic and 4 World medals in 2021.

So yes - many of us live our fandom under the impression that he coaches smarter than other coaches and the folks that post on this forum about how he doesn’t understand how to win at-large selections for his wrestlers.

And you think porn and Iowa wrestling are diametrically opposed? Have you seen Evan's mustache? :)

If only we had a reporter to find these things out instead of speculate.
Just befriend a kid not in the starting lineup or his parents. Plenty of chatty Kathy's there to know what is going on.

The staff will never divulge anything and the starters probably only talks to Willie types.

Another thing is find a friend of a current wrestler on another team. Hell.know what's up as they all chat.

Well that's how DC media would do it.

Im ok with with what we get on a need to know basis.

I agree with you. Very surprised to not see SVN on the list. Hopefully we’re wrong for some reason.
From what I heard, SVN is recovering from another injury. It did require a medical procedure, and his action for the remainder of the season is in question.

That makes the most sense. Hate hearing that yet again. I’ve never seen injuries cost a team more than PSU. It’s the Suriano curse in more than one way ! Dammit Nicky !

Unfortunately PSU has had its fair share of injuries. The good news with SVN is that he is in redshirt and it won't cost him a year of eligibility. I have full confidence this will be an after thought when he takes the mat next year.

Agree. Perhaps they’re still recovering from St Louis? :p

Extremely interesting to me that Van Ness isn’t there. Starting to worry that the injuries may be a continuous issue there.
My theory is he was going to be the 149 if healthy. Something is off but let's hope it's nothing a redshirt year won't fix.

Would it be inappropriate (as a PSU fan) to crack a joke here about how rough the bus ride may have been on their elderly?

He just spent the better part of two days in Florida laying on his back. How much more rest could he need?
Well, he probably has class, practice, Brands household chores and then his own household chores. I imagine the reason he looks so tired wrestling this year is the cut is tough, and the cards he been dealt are wearing his ass out.

That isn't how it works. At least not until you have lost 2 years of eligibility.
I believe this is correct, they're pretty liberal with medical redshirts for wrestling from what I noticed. If you don't get entered for your conference postseason tournament and have documentation that you are injured, I think they'll give it to you. That being said, I don't think you can apply for one unless you're hurt without a redshirt available.

I didn’t think he’d come back for another year of that cut. But I imagine someone with some long-term leverage was pretty persuasive, even if words were not said.

Blessing in disguise maybe

I guess timing wasn't on their side for Willie's thing. I don't see it as spiteful

Just glad the young hawks are getting some action making the scuffle a bigger deal.
yep turnaround was too quick. this worked out really well imo. very excited to see kennedy in this field.
