A Dig On PSU?

Article posted by NJ.com under Rutgers Basketball.

Insert punchline here.

On one hand Nicky says all you need is a dungeon, it is all the hard work. On the other hand he talks about the nice new facilities Rutgers is getting. Needs to make up his mind. I bet the RU staff is looking forward to the new facilities.

I dont read it as a dig

actually sounds to me likes he's going overboard to convince others (and maybe himself as well) that he made the correct decision

Not sure if it was intentional or a coincidence but he mentions fancy facilities and hype like its a bad thing. I read it as a dig to PSU, but I'm a homer, so...

Interesting quote-
"This is what wrestling needs in general," Suriano said. "More fan base. More publicity like that. It's going to be good for us, good for me. I can't wait to put on a show for all my fans around the country, especially New Jersey. I'll have my friends and family there. It's the first step to winning a title."

He says RU will be getting a new facility in 1 1/2 years but in the end it comes down to hard work, dedication, and sacrifice

I really think folks are over analyzing Suriano's words. That's understandable, in that he's never really addressed what took place with PSU, so a lot of PSU fans have questions, and feel somewhat like a date that got dumped.

I could be wrong, but I I think it's unlikely that Nick will speak too much about his leaving PSU. In my prior conversations with Nick, I've always found that he's a guy that looks forward, and not backward. Perhaps he thinks about the past, but he doesn't talk about it too much. In addition, I've always been struck by how focused he is on his process, getting better, and winning the next challenge. He really is rather laser focused, which is part of his strength, but also doesn't afford much time for reflection on the past.

On a broader scale, I'd also caution that over the years I've talked to 100s/1,000s of PSU football recruits. Some are quite honest about why they decommitted, or transferred, (or picked PSU over X, Y, or Z college) but most of them are reluctant to get into the real reasons, or if they do they offer a sanitized version or even a fictionalized version. In short, they're in a tough situation where anything they say can be held against them by fans of the program that lost out on their services. There are the exceptions that are quite honest about what took place, though in many cases they will only offer that info on a do-not-disclose basis.

I liked Nick, and enjoyed my conversations with him. I had a couple of conversations with his dad, and met his mom one time. I rooted for, and cheered for Nick when he wrestled for PSU. I'm disappointed that he opted to leave PSU, but it's his life and he gets to live it how he wants, not how myself, or other PSU fans, want. I have no animosity toward him, and wish him success in his college career, except when he wrestles a PSU wrestler.

It would be interesting to hear his version of what took place, and perhaps he will offer it in time, though I'm not holding my breath. And even if he does offer it, I won't blindly believe that it's the entire story.

Even if it can be read as a slight it's hardly worth getting offended. Every positive thing said about Rutgers isn't consequently a dig at Penn State. It's natural to look for answers for what really happened when everyone is keeping quiet or dissembling, but we now know it was a dispute over the handling of an injury, and we'll probably never know anything deeper than that. If you're looking to be offended you'll not lack opportunities but it's healthier to just come to terms that he's going to be given lots of chances to plug the Rutgers program and that's fine.

NOT A TEAM TITLE!

It's high time that we as Penn State fans do the same.

Ding ding ding you nailed it. It's kind of pathetic because if you were content with your decision you shouldn't feel the need to convince others. Facilities didn't produce all of the PSU champions, exceptional training did. Whatever he needs to do to hype himself though. My goodness, this is probably the most press he's had since high school. Sounds like papa got his wish.

It's interesting. The events since he left seem to buttress the "big fish in little pond" reason for his unhappiness at PSU. Face facts, he was NEVER going to be the big fish in Happy Valley - five national champs in room, including two freshmen and two sophomores, plus the man who is probably the face of college wrestling heading up the program.

Now Suriano is the face of Rutgers wrestling and gets the star treatment he seemingly craves more than he ever would have at PSU. You barely hear the name of the guy (Donny Pritzlaff) who. imo, is actually responsible for any progress that has been made at Rutgers program. It's all Suriano.

No doubt it comes down to hard work, quality of facilities does not change that. Where quality facilities matter is in saving time. If you have everything you need in one place, it is one stop shopping. You don't waste time having to go hit the weight room at another location, you don't waste time having to go to another location to get injury treatment or see a tutor or see the coaches, etc. That is the great thing about Lorenzo, just about everything the PSU wrestlers need is all there. Every hour saved is an hour that can be used productively on things such as studying, rehab, sleep, etc.

Well, you don't need to work for Flo to know that Nick Suriano is going to get you more clicks and attention than Donny Pritzlaff, and I'm sure Pritzlaff would concede as much. At the end of the day there's more than one way to build a program--you work with what's in front of you and Rutgers knows what it has. Only time will tell if they're making mistakes.

what goodale lacks in development abilities for his wrestlers, he over excels at marketing of his program. Under that light, Suriano is perfect for him. A kid that is a work out training warrior. A complete self starter that does not need coach oversight like many others. Yet, his high profile in NJ and in wrestling in general will help mask that 8 other guys arent making the podium. Flo and others will have an open door to come in and get content, because RU needs this and nick wants it.

if Ash comes back healthy and with suriano rutgers might have their highest finish ever. which Goodale will blow up BIGLY!

from the rutgers side this is a marriage made in heaven. good on them.

but as tikk only time will tell

Should Dunlevy not have thanked Cael. He wanted to heap all the blame on Cael's shoulders for the wavier not being granted, since it was granted it must be because Cael said OK (using Rutgers logic).

The hype over substance approach has been Goodale's modus operandi for a while now. Stating "we feel like we are a top ten program" and "we feel we have multiple national champs" years ago with no comparable results has been his strength. Now the talk is about being a top 5 team. The "top ten" concept is being leapfrogged.

I view Goodale as the Rex Ryan of college wrestling. Always over-promising and failing to deliver.
