A Penn State AD question on swimming.

SMU in Dallas was able to get 325 donors to pony up $22 Million for their 42,000 sq. ft. aquatic center that opened
last year. Just saying.

Let us know when PSU raises that much money. It's been two years.

The facility that PSU has on the drawing boards is three times the size of Robson Lindley.

Just sayin'.

It's been two years. During her presentation two years ago, Barbour announced that either ground would be broken or final plans made in 2018 on some of the projects teed up for Phase I. You've heard what I've heard.

Again, do you have any idea how much it would cost to build an aquatics center per the spec presented?

University of Iowa built a similar but larger 215 ksf Aquatic center/Rec center in 2010 for $69 million or about $320/sf. Apply 9+ years of inflation you get a sf price of about $375/sf or about $48+ million. Costs in Iowa would be a less than in PA by at least 10%, so you're looking at a cost of $53+ million. But the reality is construction inflation is much higher than "normal" inflation, so the cost will be even higher than that, then you can add another 10% to for design costs. So you'll probably end up pushing 70+ million.

Speaking of the light bill, how does that work? All the buildings and usually on some level the stadiums and arenas are lit up like a Kiss concert most of the time, to say nothing of the other buildings. When nothing is going on. Always wondered how the electric bill gets paid on campus. Is it by use or is it a flat fee? Has to be a biggie.
An interesting piece of trivia is that University Park produces about 20% of their own electricity requirements right on campus. This is not free, nor does it come close to covering all the demands, but it is interesting.

FWIW:
I made mention shortly after the MASTER PLAN Phase 1 was announced, that the Water Park - if built as spec-ed - would be in the $80 Million range.

After all the years I've spent following PSU - and their capital projects, and some of the folks who oversee/run them, along with some experience in such endeavors - I am rarely off by any more than a small percentage (as folks who have followed some of that commentary are aware).
I doubt if this one would be an outlier :)

Before reading your response I edited mine to say it would cost over $70 mil.
