All is not well in Buckeye Land

I was just about to post this. This is the kind of stuff that is devastating for Day, IMHO> There is a perceived lack of leadership. While Day has a great football mind and seems to say all the right things, his record suggests me wilts when he most needs to lead

Let's say he's loses to Tennessee at home in the first round...you think he survives that?

If they don't show up to play in the first round and get humiliated, then there may be a conversation.

But I'm thinking it happens the opposite way: backs-against-the-wall...got-something-to-prove. That kind of thing. They certainly have the talent to make a run even after the debacle yesterday.

Fair enough. I short of the title game he's gone. Might even have to win it all. No idea how he keeps his job after how he handled the loss which was worse than the loss itself.

They have the talent except at the most important position. Instead of Fields and Stroud you’ve got Howard. They can’t just throw their guys out there and win with a magician at QB.

His buyout is enormous - that’s the only thing saving him right now

I agree. Howard was awful yesterday. The only guy that played worse was their FG kicker. With tOSU's talented WR corp, they just kept running the ball. The only thing I could figure is that they lost confidence in Howard. Howard was 19 of 33 with 175 yards, a TD and 2 interceptions.

Let's also not forget, that Day's OL and D-backs aren't getting away with the illegal bull$hit that they pulled on an every play basis and all game long against PSU - no way a Neutral Officiating Crew is allowing that.... People act like scUM's recipe came out of nowhere, but want to forget that duhO$U put up near identical putrid numbers against Nebraska, but were bailed out by the b2g clown crew against UNL.... duhO$U could easily lose to a team like Tennessee with a Neutral Officiating Crew - easily.

Similar to PSU, if the fire Day, who do they bring in? Day has one of the top winning percentages right now. OSU has the money for the buyout (35M ?). Who steps in? The only thing that saves the mess this year is winning it all. I personally dont see that happening.

has enough time gone by for them to bring Urban Myer back? Other than that, Chip Kelly is right their and tOSU legend Brian Hartline is co-offensive coordinator. Day never really had any tOSU roots so I was surprised when they hired him as HC. He has been a Chip Kelly disciple and followed him up the coaching ladder until he got to tOSU.

Urban...Urban.. Urban. Would he come back is the question? IF he did, he would be like the Messiah to the Buckeye faithful. Imagine the ego to an already inflated ego. It is a great question.

For all the posters on here constantly criticizing Franklin no one has wasted more talent, including his $20 million roster this year, than Ryan Day. Clearly he was playing not to lose yesterday.
Howard did him no favors. he was AWFUL. I think the staff lost confidence in him and shut down the WR passing plays. Maybe UMs DBs had them covered. But Howard was simply awful.

Well if you coach at OSU you generally don’t get to keep your job when you lose 4 in a row to Michigan. Right or wrong, that’s the way it works.

They would have been better off with McCord. It was crazy to let him walk.

They have three weeks to get their heads into the game. Will they spend it pointing fingers? Will they be inundated by criticisms of the press, fans, social media? Will the players turn on the coaching staff? Will Howard be able to out this game behind him? Same for the place kicker?

The post game fight will have lasting affects. Could be some suspensions. Worse, Day was terrible just standing there. He is going to get hammered for that. And the players have to make a decision to defend him…..a coach that just blew the biggest chance of winning in four years…, or criticize him which won’t help team moral.

There is going to a ton of infighting and anger within that team. What players post or say to the press is going to be interesting. And if they get a bad seeding I wouldn’t be surprised to hear a couple players making a ‘business decision’ or come up with some mysterious injuries.

The long extended fight will have more impact than losing the game. Could really cost Day his job and set back the program for years.

And they have to play with Neutral Officiating Crews in the postseason which spells further problems for duhO$U's OL and D-backs (IOW, I would expect duhO$U's offense and defense to play worse in Playoffs, not better.

Great post. It is about character now. Day will invoke the "us against the world" mentality. But it is the coaches that are on the line. A lot of the players are transfer mercenaries and NIL-seeking recruits. Will they suck it up? It will be fun to see.

Are the wheels off the wagon for this season? OSU is still in the playoffs but has the team folded. It is a great question. Do the come out, beat everyone and get to the championship.....OR is it a first round exit and fold the tents?

Yesterday was a big hit for the Buckeyes on a lot of levels.

Howard picked the worst time to have his worst game by far of the year. No question, he was baaad yesterday.

But the fact is, he was having a good season going into yesterday's game. And even coming out of it, he still has the 6th highest QBR in the country per ESPN.

He played poorly and that's on him but you also have to credit Michigan. Their D was fantastic. Meanwhile, the cold weather, the wind, the bad play-calling that failed to take advantage of Buckeye advantages at the WR position...all these factors also contributed.

Personally, I think Howard has shown that he's good enough for a successful playoff run but we'll see.

Urban wouldn’t have any more success than anyone else….he wouldn’t have the “financial” advantage he had back when he coached because it’s legal now. That’s why Saban got out as well. When you’re one of the only ones doing it, it’s easy to stand out, but when everyone else can do it, it’s won’t be quite as successful.

Plus the portal allows players to leave so the teams have far less depth. A few key injuries and you are no longer the bad ass of college football.

I agree but have to wonder if things had been different if tOSU recruited Roark or Cam Ward instead of Howard after they lost confidence in Kyle McCord (who, BTW, led the Syracuse team to a win over Clemson yesterday). When asked about it, McCord basically said "Everything comes full circle".

Not to defend Howard but was he suffering a concussion?

Ryan Day is taking some serious heat. He didn't help himself when he stood there frozen like a deer in headlights as a riot took place at midfield after the game. I guess he was too stunned to react at that point.

Anyway, one of his former players added insult to injury with this Tweet after the crushing loss to Michigan:

You could see this coming a mile away. They pushed all of the chips to the middle of the table for this season. Now they have problems. Do they fire Day now or wait to see what happens with the playoff? They want to get rid of him now but that would ruin their playoffs hopes?

Personally, I think Howard is not very good, and got lots of big statistics against poor teams, with an all-star level roster of skill players. People knocked Allar for mediocre numbers in the two biggest games last season, against Michigan and Ohio State, but he was a kid versus Howard being a 23 year old Senior. Howard was not the reason we lost to them this season, but he was definitely the reason they lost yesterday.

Players can always be bitter about something so I never read too much into that BUT...
The midfield incident plus a loss to a bad Michigan team with a bad coach and an even worse QB isn't going to be forgiven.
Might have to win a title to keep his job
My son is an OSU grad and a big $ donator to the OSU program and to say that he - and many other OSU money people - are totally Pi$$ed right now would be a huge understatement. They've wanted Mike Vrabel (ex Tenn Titans) for their HC for a while now and might get their wish unless - like you mentioned - Day wins it all. Many feel he's just squandered the NFL talent that he's had to work with over the last 5 or 6 years

Agree somewhat, but an even bigger reason was their dynamic duo of Chip Kelly and Ryan Cooper Day. Just watch Day during any big-meaningful game and he looks like a deer in headlights. OSU's lack of downfield passing - especially in the 2nd half was just inexcusable.

Watching the game, it seemed like they had no wrinkles, no alternative plans. They ran the short side option play once and got 10 yards on it; never saw it called again.

They ran Judkins into those 2 soon-to-be NFL DTs over and over again AFTER losing their top C. It seemed like the plan was to play a similar bully ball style and get their balls back type of mentality that never worked and they never adjusted from.

Credit to Michigan, they literally did nothing special. They showed up and OSU decided to get in a rock fight. If the Buckeyes kicker didn't blow 2 easy kicks, they likely win this 16-10 as Michigan would have needed a TD late to win.

Howard threw some crap balls yesterday, but go back and watch it. They didn't use their WRs worth a damn. Final drive, none of the passes went beyond the 1st down line to gain. With Egbuka and Smith, that's criminal.

As someone shared from McCord, it all comes full circle.

Typical Chip Kelly - Ryan Day offensive coaching job. Day just looks lost in the big games. Should have never been promoted to HC from his OC position at OSU.

Good point on how Day attempted to play the macho game. The last three years scUM just manhandled them and it probably irked him to no end. Was constantly pointed out by press and in social media.

Looks like he thought he could do the same. After a year of doing the same to opponents made him believe they could wear down the D late in the game.

But it became obvious it wasn’t working. But it also seems that he and the OC lost confidence in Howard after that terrible interception at the goal line.

I really don't think so though the hit he took certainly could have resulted in that.

But he was checked out, OK'd to play, couldn't wait to get back on the field, and even had his number called a couple times on running plays which I can't imagine they would have done if there'd been the least question about his health.

I mean, the hard experience of life has made me a pretty cynical person, but even I don't think they would have run the guy back on the field if there were concerns about a possible head injury.

I know Indiana already extended him, but wouldn’t it be something if Ohio St bought out Cignetti’s contract and hired him? I feel like he has the better personality for the Ohio St program.

Chip Kelly got figured out about 10 years ago. He’s like a broken down thoroughbred put out to pasture
