All Star Classic - Sat, Nov 16

This was supposed to mean that Beau was looking a lot like Gabe Kaplan.

I love Carter, but for all his bravado in that Flo interview, they were very evenly matched. He'll improve on his performance next time they meet. But I would like to see a bit more respect pre-match next time.

Come on, man. Carter is Carter. He’s not gonna change and I don’t want him to. He’s one of the GOATs and I’m thrilled he’s a Nittany Lion.

Starocci doesn't mind being in deep water. In his mind he knows he will win every one takedown match. It can be a dangerous way to live but it seems to work.

I don't want him to change either.......but if you're doing the talk, you gotta back it up. IMO the bravado didn't match his performance. Impressive to beat another National Champion but tonight they were evenly matched. A little credit to his opponent never hurt anyone.

And we are again reminded of Quentin Wright's observation that the deadlift has no causation and little correlation with the ability to get out of bottom and we can add getting takedowns as well.

It's unfortunate for Feldman there isn't a 220/225 weight class-not Kyle Snyder 2.0.
Feldman’s lack of length would still be an issue at 225. Kueter would be a beast if there was a 225 weight class.

I’ll raise that with Lewis, Griffith and Keckeisen.
Taylor and Molinaro were both Olympians and better in folk than anybody Carter has beaten in folk.

Not saying Dake > Carter, only that this isn't compelling evidence for Carter.

If I had to pick one for folk, it would be Carter because their careers are similar but he's so much of a tone-setter every day in the room. In free, Dake.

Carter is good, he's no Dake in freestyle at this point. Dake is about done though.
Future is bright for team USA.

I need to stay off other sites. Seeing some of the idiocy on FB and the like - e.g. Keckheisen’s pace will be too much; Carter’s never faced anyone as fast and powerful

Yeah, he trains with slow twitch bums like AB

Cael, Taylor, Brooks. All 84/86kg Olympic medalists. He was also a 74kg medalist’s training partner (Bekzod) and beat Nolf at least twice.

Pretty good at wrestling.

He won, therefore he backed it up. The W is all that matters. Ice water in his veins and an iron will.

If you want to fix the sport. When one guy takes the first 3 shots in a match. It should absolutely warrant a stall call

That being said. Mendez converted his one shot. Bo didn’t convert any of his 5/6 shots. But I like that he was a bit more aggressive
Don’t agree here. None of Bartlett’s shots in the first were particularly good shots nor were they super committed.

Carter is similar to Dake in that he just wins.

I didn't watch last night because I'm cheap and I don't like Flo, but I listened to Ironhead and it sounded to me like it went exactly as we would have expected (and if fans of other schools are trying to find some chink in PSU's armor, they're just being unrealistic). Tough match for Bartlett that was even and could have gone either way. I think that's what we can expect each and every time those two wrestle and I'm hopeful that Beau can at least get some Saturday night PSU magic and win that one against him this year (because Beau Bartlett absolutely deserves to be a national champion). Kasak and Haines with solid, workmanlike wins after bumping up in weight (it could be said that both of them actually bumped two weights, since Kasak was at 141 at the beginning of last year). Van Ness with a crazy, remarkable, fun win against a solid wrestler. And Carter Starocci backing up his trash talk by beating yet another returning national champion. Anyone who thought that he was going to beat Keckheisen like a drum and major him just wasn't being very realistic. I don't think the weight bump is even a consideration for Carter, but Keckheisen's baseline D and his counter wrestling are top-notch and it really should have been expected that whoever won would do so on the basis of ONE takedown or with a rideout and a riding time point (Keck wasn't going to ride Starocci like a mule, but I could have seen Starocci possibly riding Keck out). Just a stellar night for the good guys, although I feel badly for Beau. Can't wait to see how they handle Drexel today and who actually takes the mat for PSU at several weights.

Biggest takeaway for me (besides how good Van Ness looked) was Carter’s knee looking 100%. No brace, movement looked good etc..

Carter also tweeted last night something to the affect of ‘how grateful he is and he gets to do this again tomorrow’

You may see all of the guys that wrestled last night today vs Drexel other than Kasak

I’m not sure I’d say PK was stalling, but he didn’t respond that well to Carter’s pressure either. Especially after his one connected attack yielded nada. Typically moved in reverse, even if finding attacks/counters to try, took his time getting back to center, stealing moments of breath wherever he could. I could understand why the fans wanted stalling.

Any notion of Carter stalling is just pure jealousy.

Here are some impressions I had about the event.

141- Beau & Mendez were very evenly matched wrestlers, but Mendez seemed to have just a sliver more determination. While Beau hung with him for the entire match, I wouldn't say he was ever close to scoring. He took more shots than usual, but Mendez was able to defend those pretty easily and was never in jeopardy. These two are so evenly matched that it always seems to come down to who wants it more, or who can find the inner determination to win. When people talk about Levi or Carter, they often mention that "something else" or the "it factor" that makes them special. It's like an inner desire that can't be stopped and helps them find a way to win against even the toughest opponents. Mendez has that. Beau can definitely beat Mendez, but to do so, I think he needs to find a little more confidence, determination inside or will power to get it done.

149- Van Ness looked fantastic. He took it to another level. I think I now understand what Levi meant when he said that having Van Ness in the line-up helps bring energy that everyone else can feed off. Van Ness was electric. He was on Waters like a tick the entire match, or like a rat on a Cheeto, if you prefer. Van Ness went out and just got after it. He took Waters apart. The entire match was Shayne stalking forward, looking for an opening to attack while Waters spent the match defending. If this is how Shayne is going to start the season, then come nationals he could be unstoppable. He might be there already. It'll be nice to see him against tougher competition, but who is that? He almost tech'd the #3 ranked guy in his first match back after being off for a year. Van Ness looks like he's ready to win nationals right now.

157- Kasak won a low scoring match. Tyler hit a quick & slick low shot early in first period, and was working hard for a turn & pin from it. He got close, but wasn't able to pick-up any back points, or get Kellar fully flattened, but he did accumulate over a minute of riding time. The rest of the first period was uneventful. The second & third periods were almost entirely mat wrestling. Kasak rode for almost the entire second period and locked up riding time. Kellar rode Kasak for the entire third period, but that wasn't a winning strategy, as Kasak picked up the riding time point at the end. A good win against a quality opponent for Tyler.

174- Levi came out and just got after it. He was in DeVos' face the entire match. It was like cat backing a mouse into a corner and just playing with it a little before moving in for the kill. Levi's pressure was so suffocating that DeVos was on the defensive the entire match, and spent much of it backing to the edge. He's lucky he only received two stalling calls, but there really wasn't much he could do against Levi's pressure. If DeVos had engaged with Levi, he might have lost by technical fall or pin. Levi was relentless. Levi has definitely grown into the weight. He's a full-sized 174 pounder and I'd expect to see him standing on the top of the podium with a big smile in March.

184- Carter is a full-size 184 pounder & wore no braces or wraps on his knee. This was a tough and technical match between two champs. Keck had some solid shots, but Carter's defense was unreal. There wasn't a lot of scoring, but Carter was in Keck's face the entire match. I think that's what wore Keck down, as he was noticeably slow getting back to center on several occasions and was even booed by the crowd multiple times for trying to take a little extra rest time after the whistle. The match went to overtime where Carter found a way to win. Carter was the more aggressive wrestler, and displayed unreal defense against one of the best offensive wrestlers in the game. I was surprised by how easily Keck got his escape. It almost seemed like Carter didn't fully commit to the ride. Perhaps he's saving that for next time? My gut instinct is that their next match, which could be the NCAA finals, will be a 2-0 victory for Carter, because he'll get his escape and find a way to ride Keck out.

Shayne, Levi & Carter look ready to win nationals right now.

I actually thought that Carter might beat Keckheisen 2-0 last night exactly as you described, by escaping and then by riding Keck out. It didn't hurt my feelings at all that it went to OT and I was pretty confident that when it did, that Starocci would win.

One of my favorite non PSU moments last night was the double stall call during one of the early lightwieght bouts(25 or 33?). Some of the uneducated fans were heard complaining about the ref "inserting" himself in the bout. However the old timers around me were all smiling and in agreement that it was welcome return to the old days. Especially after watching the attack rate of the women's FS bout earlier. Hopefully this becomes a point of emphasis
