And Moorhead is fired

Ridiculous. The most successful coach in MSU history is Dan Mullen, a good ‘ol boy from....the deep woods and dark swamps of Drexel Hill, PA. These excuses are pathetic. Best of luck to them in finding the right peckerwood to be the next HC.
True dat. I was born and raised in Delaware County. As you know, that's pretty far away in every way from the Starkville, Mississippi. I just can't get over that the writer refers to being a football coach in the south as "sacred." Maybe he's referring to SEC jobs only. MSU is on the low rung of that ladder.

Thanks for sharing this link! Great read. I haven't read all of the opinions in this thread, but it seems to me that you have to give a coach more than two years to turn things around. I hope that Coach Moorhead lands on his feet, whether at a new gig or enjoying a break from the game. I would imagine MSU is going to find out that the grass is always greener on the other side.

Moorhead must be relieved to have been relieved if that portrait of a misplaced northerner in Dixie is correct (which it probably is). Regardless, he made good money and gets to leave Starkville. Good for him.

Almost $15M for 2 years work? As Larry Zbyszko, IMHO one of the all-time great good guy to heel turns ever, once said, "The more bucks you got, the more friends you got."
JoMo has plenty of friends to show for the time he spent at MSU...
I certainly hope he doesn’t just do it for the money. If you don’t have pride in what you do and want to be really good at it, do something else.

Would bet every penny of that $15M that he doesn't coach JUST for the money, but it sure is nice having those 15 million friends to console you when you're let go. Many folks in the real world are unceremoniously let go with a heckuva lot less in their pocket...

I get that, but I seriously doubt he’s sitting there not worried about being fired because he made a lot of money.

Thought Moorhead was mismatched with MSU geographically but to give someone two years is crap. He had a solid recruiting class coming in and did take them to two straight bowl games. It would be one thing if he had losing records and no bowls each of the last two years. He will have a job as an OC somewhere as soon as he wants it or a head coaching job at a smaller northern school.
"The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence" is the mindset of the powerful???

A shame. Very short leash.
What's really scary is that with the firing of a talented and rising coach like Moorhead a very short leash could become the new normal. The pressure that comes with a school's college football championship quest is getting crazy. Florida State fired Willie Taggart after only 21 games. Boosters don't want to be embarrassed by poor performances nor do they have the patience to wait for the circle to be complete to see if a team will get better.

All things being equal if James Franklin was hired last year and this year's team gave up 10 sacks to Temple like PSU did in 2015, I wonder if he would have survived to get to a year three. That's even in view of the reality of the sanctions.

If Schiano can get another P5 hc gig, then JM will have no problem.
Funny how life repeats itself. One of the reasons being given for Moorhead's firing is "he was not a good fit". That's what USC and Pat Haden said about Ed Orgeron. Now there are articles in the LA press about what a bad decision it was to fire him as they look over hills and valleys to his success at LSU - and where USC is. If Moorhead chooses his next gig wisely, maybe MSU might bemoan his loss just like USC does with Ogeron.

That’s what stood out to me. That base (or at least a vocal minority) are so hypocritical. They’d welcome back a Northerner in Mullen in a second, but use it as an excuse in firing a guy two years in.

Reading this thread, I couldn't help but find a football board at Miss State ...Found the 247 for comments about JoMo

"I think Napier made the wrong choice if he indeed turned down the job. Word will get out that he turned down a significant pay raise and step up the ladder to a power 5 SEC west school. I think we have the best university president in the entire nation. Questions will be asked about that and I don’t see a legit answer unless it is Baylor. You turned down 4/million a year to keep $895,000/yr?"

"Why would he want to come here? 2 games into his first season there are some fans that would begin the negative chants to get rid of him (read the majority of your posts that are negative towards our coaches and players)."

More from the Miss St 247 forum....

"I sincerely hope there were discussions with a likely replacement before the decission was made to fire JoMo."

"Good luck with this hire all of those who wanted Moorhead fired. We just told the world you’ll get two seasons to get it right even if you recruit well. John Cohen is in a no win situation. Folks wanted Moorhead fired and now they’ll be unhappy when we can’t get a splash hire."

"I'm wondering if something else happened that we don't know about? The suddenness of this seems suspicious to me. I could be something as simple as Moorehead was asked to make staff changes and refused. Who knows but this is not exactly the best time to be in the market for a new coach. The coaching carousel has pretty much ended. Guys have already signed new contracts and extensions, so it's going to be more difficult and costly to pry away any type of big name. Probably going to have to settle for a coordinator at a top level program or a head coach at a lower level program like Napier."

Florida is hardly a lateral move. Too funny.

If you are writing articles about how sacred coaching in the SEC is, then it's absolutely a lateral move.

Truthfully, Miss St is in the bottom tier of P5 jobs. It's probably a step up a UK or Duke because at least you aren't a basketball school, but competing with Bama, LSU, and Auburn in just your division is a poor recipe for winning anything.

They were pretty bad off and on for years before PA guy Mullen showed up. Even Jackie $herrill struggled there.

CJF doesn't owe JM a thing. Morehead did a nice job at PSU. If anything JM owes CJF.

"Quick with a handshake and pat on the back, he gave off a welcoming vibe despite his northern mannerisms that seemed to put off a certain segment of diehard fans from the beginning. In hindsight, it took a lot of guts to come down here from where he did to take on one of the most sacred roles in the south. And while the aforementioned traits may translate into strong relationships for a banker or lawyer in the community, it just wasn’t meant to be for this particular football coach in this particular college town."

I suppose the next coach will not be a northerner. I can't get over "one of the most sacred roles in the south." What are the other sacred roles in the south?

What exactly are northern mannerisms?? That's a weird comment for the guy to write.
