Andrew Long obliterates the field at Midlands

Andrew Long is, IMO, without question the best 141 pounder in college wrestling, at any level. That said, he's like 25 or 26 years old.

Doesn't matter that he is 26. He wasn't on a collegiate mat for years and comes back and shows this kind of domination. OW for sure. No doubt. I think he's the best 141 lb in collegiate wrestling. He definitely would be the favorite to be the National Champ in Division One. Kid has not lost a thing since he left Penn State. Actually, he looks much, much better. He's an animal.

Pretty wild to think post-graduate David Taylor could wreck the field and legitimately not be OW.

No question that Long looks great after a few years away from competitive wrestling. Kudos for that, and I agree he deserves OW. But this is a 26 year old man going up against guys 18 to maybe 22 years old. That age difference is without doubt a big factor in his domination. Not knocking him, just a fact.

Sorensen won OW for beating Tsirtsis.
Another Tsirtsis... let's not shoot and see if I can win... snooze fest. I fast forwarded past regulation to sudden victory knowing that's when the match would really begin.

Really? That's funny...I could have sworn Long DID win OW at the Midlands I was covering...see you all Friday! (or Thursday if you're staying at my hotel in Chattanooga)

Weak field but 23 - 6 TF final over Bleise.
How was 141 at Midlands a weak field?
Mecate, Jack, Ashnault, Abidin, Kolodzik, Durso to name a few. No doubt, Long is the best 141 pounder but I guess the field felt weaker because he didn't get to face any of the top 3 seeds and his path was relatively easy. He beat 4 unseeded guys before dismantling 7th seeded Bleise in the finals.

Long was the official OW. The Big 10 network apparently picked their own and named Sorenson. Pretty lame of them not to make that clear.
kind of like pitt's 129 ncs from the 20's in fb. there was the official one, then the mom & pop gramercy corner deli nc ;).

26 and I thought he looked a bit older than that with his head gear off. He is built like a shit brick house and conditioning did not seem to be an issue. I give him kudos for putting in the work and doing what he's doing - but 26 with his background has to be a huge advantage vs. much younger wrestlers. I thought I heard them say something like at that level clock resets to 4 years of eligibility - doesn't sound correct.

Andrew Long is in the NAIA wrestling for Grand View. You have an unlimited number of years to complete 4 years of eligibility. Rules for Div. 1 are different. You have five years in Div. 1 to complete four years of eligibility.

Yeah, Long actually looks older than 26 because his hair is, shall we say, "thinning early".

Eligibility wise, Long still has this season plus one more year at the NAIA level, which unlike D1 does not impose the "5 years to play 4" rule. Long's 5 year clock at D1 started in 2008 and ended in 2013, so he is ineligible at D1. No such restriction at the NAIA level, you are only limited by the 4 year participation rule. Long previously used 1 year at Iowa State and then 1 year at Penn State.

Well, you know the BTN is gonna pick a B10 guy as OW. And I wouldn't expect BTN to clarify that their OW was not the "official" OW of the tournament. Not ideal, but just the nature of the beast.

How is it bullshit? Matt Brown entered college (Iowa State) the same year as Andrew Long, so they are likely close to the same age. That would have made Brown 24 or 25 years old as a senior at PSU. No question his wrestling benefited from that additional maturity (physical and otherwise); it's foolish to think otherwise. No one has blinders on about this.
