Bassett to Iowa

When Rutgers inside Bill Garbarini says he knows what Rutgers offered and what Iowa offered, I tend to believe him. "No we were not close to Iowa’s $5 mill but in 7 figures".
So Iowa really offered $5mill? Thought Basset said those numbers were unrealistic and the final 4 made similar $$ offers?? Unless he really did get $5mill but wants to play it off like he didn’t ??

Getting as many as we do makes for great entertainment. All one must do is stand outside Lorenzo and watch Larry Lee come up to every PSU kid asking if he (Larry) can hook the PSU kid up with a meeting. Larry subtly points by nudging his head towards the weight training area of Lorenzo where Bob is standing with cash bags and Bobby wearing a yellow Hawkeye wrestling security shirt.
I'd love to see Larry try to pull a Tim Beckman. He'd maybe even equal Beckman's success and land a single backup. But more likely not.

You basically said a high school kid was bought and paid for and that's the only reason he went where he did, without any actual proof of any of it. That's petty sour grapes in my book. Be better. We're better than that.

It certainly is, but quit the bs "Iowa has always been my favorite, I've known my whole life its where I wanted to go" I call BS on this take
So the whole recruitment "process" was just a farce and him wasting a lot of people's time? He's smart, but not smart enough to know this is a *really* bad look?

Yep, you can't change history. When people start bending the truth, it's very difficult to tie up all the loose ends. Unfortunately, he cant keep his mouth shut and put so much in the public domain that the entire narrative doesn't make sense.

Thanks

Now, if they don't stop sending guys to these bum programs not Penn State, it's time to nuke them
It's all cyclical, but YG has not been atop the world since the Lee-Kemerer-Shields team at Franklin Regional.

They get a lot of volume because of PA D6 + D7. And they still produce lots of D1 talent. But nearly all are nice to have for PSU, not priorities. It's good to be the king.

Who is being petty? Everyone on this board knows that I have been a vocal opponent of the Bo Bassett marketing/auction campaign since last summer. It never felt right to me. So no sour grapes here. This is one of those situations where everyone got what they wanted. There were no losers. That said, it is perfectly fine to point out what DID happen. The Bassett marketing campaign worked. Good luck to Bo and I hope he always placed behind the PSU guy.

Exactly. How on earth can it be "sour grapes" when PSU declined participation in the auction??? How can you be sour about losing when you didn't even participate???

DT followed Cael - he was all set to go to Iowa State ---
I'm hopeful there is a chance that he backs out and commits to PSU

it's only a verbal - kids say the darndest things

I dont think Bassett is a PSU fan which is one reason he is going to a rival. As a 10th grader he was lecturing PSU fans on how to act at sporting events. He was not going to PSU.

How old is Bassett?

I found this story from LAST year that said he was 19.

Dude. Rule #1 is "don't cite Essentially Sports as an authority". Just sayin'. It may also be Rules ##2-5 also.

Mods -- please install a Tase Me Now button for when people link to Essentially Sports.

@voltz99 -- Bassett would be ineligible now if that article were true. PIAA rule: all athletes in all sports must be 18 or younger on June 30 to compete in the upcoming year.

Best info online that I found is the Bo turned 18 a month ago. Obviously, he will be almost 20 years old when he starts college wrestling. Iirc, Levi Haines was a similar age (i.e. almost 20) when he started his junior season at PSU.

Edit - West2East has his bday as Aug. 25, 2006, which makes him about 4 months older than I thought. So he will be a full 20 years old before he takes the mat in college.

maybe your naïve? Did you watch his announcement last night? I'm not buying any of that bs.....he just said last week he wasn't going to commit til the summer, a couple days later we get breaking news that he's suddenly announcing in 2 days, so what changed? Large bag with a short deadline? Isn't the whole recruiting thing a waste of time though for a lot of coaches, these guys get whined and dined only to go elsewhere....I get it that's how recruiting works, my money is that he was not headed to Iowa until uncle Bob threw a pile of cash in his face and said here's our offer but its only good for "x" amount of days....just my opinion

I don't disagree. It's like the old line in a courtroom or deposition when you catch someone making totally inconsistent statements - "(w)ere you lying then or are you lying now?"

Most of us have heatd enough coach-speak to not take him at face value.

Again: something changed to make him abruptly terminate his recruitment.

With the exception of a possible short-fuse offer, everything else -- Spencer Idol, publicity, face of the program, coaches, teammates, RTC, facilities, academics, campus, proximity, etc. -- everything was exactly the same.

So then why the abrupt change?

And BTW, I never said he ahouldn't take the money or this waa nefarious. Those are your inferences.

Exactly. He is the only party creating moral judgments and trying to put them in others' mouths. I think most kids would take the money (and I think most parents would counsel their kid to take the $$$ - he's a HS Jr, the chances he wins zero NCs is better than he wins 4 imho). He'd be silly not to take that kind of $$$ once offered - easy decision. But that doesn't make the Squawkeyes decision to offer this type of $$$ for a HS Jr a good one! Whatever deficit relative to revenues they operated at this year, well.... they just increased it many times over by their own actions! If you're at cornville right now and you have a great season including a high placement at Nationals, are you going to demand more $$$ and if they ignore you, start looking at interested parties who are willing to pay? They just increased the cost of keeping a wrestler like AF for two seasons before Bo Bassett even gets there

Since Cael arrived, Iowa is 10-14 in the finals. PSU is 38-19… other than Lee’s 3 wins you have 3 of 4 other champs, I think? PSU has had what 15 or so?

You cant go by that. As someone mentioned that can simply be a negotiating ploy for more money.

He will be 20 when his senior class starts college. DOB Aug 6 2006.

Agree. Besides....I need to spend my time trolling Larry Lee because a high-school kid is making 10 times what his boy is at Iowa. I don't have time for these threads anymore...
Wait till I tell him Iowa ALWAYS had their eye on Bo and family taking over the Iowa program one day and not Spencer. Probably gonna piss him off when I tell him Spencer should have made the easy choice instead of the "right" choice..

Ha! I had the same thought, especially after I stumbled upon this old photo of AB's nat'l letter of intent signing day. There was some HWT kid sitting next to him that signed on to go to Ohio State that same day.
