Bassett to Iowa

FYI Bo was born August 25 2006 . Have seen so many dates for his birthday over the years. Rudis actually has it wrong as well. They've it Jan 5 2007

Crowd size is such a ridiculous comment for why someone would go to a school. I'm sure it's a "nice to have" component, but probably well down the list of needs and wishes of a high end recruit. "Dad, forget about the education and money and RTC and championships. I can wrestle in front of 15,000 people at Iowa 8 times a year versus two at PSU. That's a game changer".

maybe your naïve? Did you watch his announcement last night? I'm not buying any of that bs.....he just said last week he wasn't going to commit til the summer, a couple days later we get breaking news that he's suddenly announcing in 2 days, so what changed? Large bag with a short deadline? Isn't the whole recruiting thing a waste of time though for a lot of coaches, these guys get whined and dined only to go elsewhere....I get it that's how recruiting works, my money is that he was not headed to Iowa until uncle Bob threw a pile of cash in his face and said here's our offer but its only good for "x" amount of days....just my opinion
Iowa was desperate to change the narrative. They are number 2 in the country with many high priced transfers and got demolished by PSU. The gap is getting bigger each year.

Getting Bassett allows Iowa fans to focus on something other than how much better PSU is as a program. It is going to be a long 2 years for them until Bassett puts on a black singlet for them.

After reading more stuff, I think Bo was Iowa's to lose..
OkieSt. a consideration but heavy lean to Iowa.
I think Bo and his family kept the cards fairly close to their chest and when Iowa started throwing #'s they let them panic.
Hence heavy NIL for something that was already a done deal with equal nil #'s

The more you think about it the more you realize that it could never be PSU. Bo has trained his ass off to get good but he's just as dedicated to building his brand and cashing in. It's been said a million times before but some guys have to be the big fish in the small pond and Bo is definitely one of those kids. If he'd have commited to PSU he certainly would have got better training but he NEVER would have got the money that's coming to him. There's something to be said about getting life-changing money before you're old enough to rent a car.

The real losers here are all of the guys who went to school before NIL (and especially those who only missed out by a couple years). It kind of sucks for Spencer Lee to be training with a kid who idolizes him who could also buy and sell him.

I hear ya, but not really losers. You participate on the rules of the (your) day. And take advantage accordingly. It's like some of the pro sports contracts now and such and such a QB (?Bart Starr) never got to play when QBs make $50MM a year. True, but your deal is your deal.

I dont think Bassett is a PSU fan which is one reason he is going to a rival. As a 10th grader he was lecturing PSU fans on how to act at sporting events. He was not going to PSU.

Bassett said he wants to train at RTC his senior year of high school, so I'm guessing that's a move to Iowa City next year.

Not happening. He has a great situation at McCort. He'll likely fly out 1 week a month or so to train at Iowa.

But he/his family are not giving up being able to attend every single good tournament there is, be on a good team and be able to travel whenever they want by moving to Iowa.

Iowa high schools can't even compete anywhere inseason. Bo isn't giving up becoming a 4x Ironman champ to go to the RTC.

It was a done deal and that's why he concocted this long drawn-out recruiting process??? He wasn't trying to create a bidding war to maximize his NIL payout (a highest bidder war keeping 6 teams in the finals is kind of the opposite of a "done deal")??? Not sure I agree with your assessment that he was going to Iowa even if they offered him nothing and the long drawn-out, overly-dramatic recruiting process was just a publicity stunt for his favorite school. Not sure I buy that given what insiders from programs who participated in the bidding process set up are reporting.

In my opinion the cozy tight confines of Rec Hall make for the best environment. If I’m a kid I want the highest voltage venue. Anytime you sell 15,000 tickets but, only 8,000’show up, …. ah well …. it’s just somewhat depressing. Reference: PSU MBB and Carver.

He got Dumb and Dumber to panic and to keep upping their offer, against what was likely themselves once the price hit a certain point. Plus brought all kinds of attention to himself/his brand in the process.

Ultimately this was all about publicity and money. Nothing else.

Bo probably was never seriously considering PSU, I think his second choice was OSU.

Clearly someone put pressure on him. Just last week in the interview he said he was going to take his time and would announce in the summer. Then what happened?

He attended the massacre at wounded knee. Most likely Bob freaked out and panicked in embarrassment and gave Bo an ultimatum. $xxx with an expiration date, and to Bo it proved an offer too good to refuse, or at least it finally tipped the scales between OSU and Iowa IMO.

As far as I am concerned that would have been an immediate disqualifier, and bordering unethical when working with an 18 year old, but his ethics have been questioned before many times.

I have zero confidence in the $5 Mil claims, simply ludicrous, but Bob ain't the sharpest billionaire I have seen and is governed by emotions IMO, and can be provoked, as seen on GIA/ Beacon many times. Most of his investments do far have proved an embarrassment in terms of ROI. I will now give him credit for over spending on a recruit, vs on a mercenary, maybe he is slowly learning that lesson.

I don't buy for a minute Bo's statement that all NIL offers were essentially equal, and I doubt we ever get near the truth. Really, what's he going to say, they bought me? Whatever the amount it could cause discord amongst team mates, especially one hot blooded Italian who may now be jealous.

I am pretty damned Happy we aren't playing that game. We have NIL, but it clearly is way down the list in terms of recruitment enticements. 4-5 years of blatant self promotion and the circus of distraction that creates is not optimal.

You're asking Slumlord Bob to be ethical??? That's funny.

And I really hope the numbers come out, especially if they're sky high. The implosion in Iowa will be great to watch. I don't think the offers were close either. Iowa is desperate and got played by somebody who was likely going there anyway.

Completely agree with this take. Common for Western PA folks to either love PSU or hate PSU. I would theorize that Larry and Specs Lee also hated PSU and raised their kid with that mindset too. Hopefully, Bo will convince TnT to work the team harder....maybe 4:00am sessions?

I said this 2 years ago and got scolded. After 2 years paying close attention to few other programs I am shocked he'd chose Iowa. 5 mil after 4,5,6 years I wouldn't really need my knees or shoulders that much any more, show me the money. Being a millionaire in a year removed from high school you'd be dumb not to take it.

Long story short I could continue to hate Iowa at Iowa for 5 mil. I have a feeling a few on here would come with me if we evenly distributed the funds.

Wow. Just so I’m clear. A kid wicked-smart enough to snooker Iowa’s sugar daddy (at a school he admittedly planned to attend since childhood) into giving him several more million than he would’ve gladly taken this summer will be 19 entering his senior year of HS?
Forgive an old hiker from the 5/17 era (kindergarten at 5, diploma at 17/18) for dismissing learning issues for this well-spoken, intelligent young man for that delay, and suspiciously considering athletic advantage. Doesn’t mean it’s true or make Bo any less of a talent. Does highlight my petty side and increase my rooting interest against.

So, four NCAA individual championships in 17 years at 141 and above for Iowa while Cael has already had 35 at Penn State by my count. Nearly nine times as many individual titles speaks for itself.

Saw the Flo interview with Jax after his OSU commitment. After the interview with Jax, they talked a little about Bo and Iowa. Apparently, Bo had a timeline sheet of his wrestling career he made up about 6 years ago. Flo zoomed in on the timeline sheet and one and only school name he wrote on it was Iowa. So that was his destination from the beginning.

So the farcical recruitment process was just a way to get Slumlord Bob to bid against himself and get more NIL money? Well played, Bo. 🤣

Been happening forever. Ohio kids are known to do the same . If you believe Bo got 5 million over 5 years you will believe anything. Do you believe Carter makes 1.3 million for this year ?

Carter making $1.3M doesn't seem that crazy to me.
