Being Bonus-Point Minded

4 Duals, albeit not the "meat of our schedule", have resulted in a bout record of 35-5 (87%), with 25 Bonus Point wins (62%). Looking forward to the conference matches.

I like when I hear more guys nationally talking about being bonus-point minded. Is it to homerish to credit Cael & the way PSU wrestles with impacting dudes like UNI's Taylor Lujan?:

Freshman 174-pounder Taylor Lujan and 184-pounder Drew Foster are both No. 12 in their respective classes this week after wins at Wisconsin. Schwab loved Lujan’s attitude after he defeated Ryan Christensen 10-3.

“He had a chance to get bonus points," Schwab said. "You know, he came over right away and said 'Sorry, Coach, I didn't get bonus points.' But I think he controlled everything. I think he is one of the best guys in the country. I really do. He gave himself a couple of opportunities, so he really controlled the match."

That is the million dollar question. We have debated this in my circle the past few years. Does Cael cause the bonus point epidemic or is it more a product of recruiting guys who are already that way? I argue that he creates it, or at the very least nurtures it. Cael encourages guys to wrestle loose and wide open. He is never critical of "high risk" wrestling like Bo and Nolf engage in. I would say Cael fosters the wide open style and the resulting success is getting more people to engage in that mentality as a way of keeping up. Remember when Michigan tried the towel boy at wide receiver to match what the water boy was doing? Same thing really.
