Bill Farrell thread - Nov 9-11

The Alexander Steen project ended badly for Steen, looks like his shoulder (surely his typing shoulder) came out as he was getting tech'd. Good for him though, he put himself out there, knowing he was not only going to lose but that there was a significant chance it would go that badly. Not that he was going to beat anyone in that bracket but drawing IMar was bad luck.

The Russian Matt Brown gets next just rag-dolled Dan Vallimont. He had a quick tech on a 4 point exposure, a dramatic 4 point throw, and a takedown. Matt will have his hands full.

I don't think I've ever seen Matt Brown get rag-dolled....he may well lose, but it won't be easy against him...it never is!

Holy crap. Nick Lee just blew up Alan Waters.
Has Nick really improved since committing or was I just not as aware of his level till he committed. Even when he lost to Red couldn't help but be impressed now he just seems to be off the chart

I also think Nick was out almost the whole school season, could have ducked Red and won at another weight, and still took on the challenge.

Only bad loss I remember in folk is when Logan Storley pinned him at the Scuffle.

Other than that, his "worst" loses in folk as a PSUer were:

4-0 to Chris Perry at the Scuffle as a junior
8-4 to Logan Storley at a PSU - Minny dual as a junior
7-3 to Kokesh at B1G Championships as a senior

He had a few other 3-point loses over his career, but most of the remaining were 1-point loses, and many of those were in SV or TB. He won 118 at PSU, and lost 16.

Nico wins 5-0, gumby'd his way out of an impossible spot to end the first.

Cody Brewer up on Garrett 11-7, worth looking at on Mat 3.

Anyone want to bet that Nick Lee is not the last kid to leave HS in a second tier wrestling state early? His story may just be the next wave in the arms race.
Similar to what Kyle Snyder did, but spending that year at an RTC instead of Colorado Springs. It makes so much sense, get acclimated to the college environment while getting world class training.

Aminov was close to a takedown, and Brown scrambled to come out on top. They scored it a takedown Brown. it was close to 2 Aminov and 1 reversal, so Russia challenged. Russia lost the challenge, and Aminov was not a happy guy. 1 point for lost challenge and Brown got two more off desperation throw. Final 9-3.

There were rumors last year that Mark Hall might do something similar. I can see it happening with an individual wrestler here or there, but not with a lot of guys. Snyder dominated his opposition in Maryland. It appears that his going to the OTC worked out well for him and for US Wrestling.

That approach, if more take it, is somewhat comparable to what US Soccer is trying. Several years ago, they decided that their development system had thousands of really good players, but wasn't producing many elite players. So they came up with an Academy system, where really good players would practice with and play on Academy teams, and pretty much only compete against other Academy teams. One of the controversial aspects of the program was that if a kid played on an Academy team, they were not allowed to play on their high school team. The feeling was that high school play was much lower, and that engaging in it would foster bad habits, while not promoting growth of the elite player. In remains somewhat controversial, and many of the elite players have looked for a hybrid approach -- play on elite teams, but not Academy teams, while still playing on their high school teams. I was looking at the roster of the US Women's U-17 team just yesterday, and was surprised to see that several of them took this hybrid approach, and played on their high school team. (With the caveat that in most situations, the high school team was very strong, and also had very good coaching.)

Someone like Spencer Lee is not going to learn a whole lot wrestling his senior year in high school. It would be a stunning upset if he lost a match this year. However, he's wrestling for an elite high school program, Franklin Regional, and is also spending additional time practicing with the Young Guns.

Personally, I think it's great when elite athletes stay at home, and enjoy the high school experience. They have their whole lives to live away from their childhood home, and college wrestling will be there when they get there. They only have 17/18 years to enjoy being kids, and as elite athletes they've already decided to dedicate a large amount of their free time to practice their sport.

No right or wrong here -- just a few different approaches to somewhat conflicting goals.

Awesome...Thanks Lemon and others.

Very similar to HS football "early enrollees" I would think, where a recruit gets a Spring camp session under their belts.

PSU usually gets 2-3 early enrollees in football each recruiting cycle

Reading the brackets, some interesting matchups and results:

57
Nico will have Terao in semis, and may face Zach Sanders in finals.

61
We know the Nick Lee domination of Waters.
Someone mentioned Brewer beat Garrett, 15-12
Semis are stacked: Graff vs Brewer, Ness vs L. Steiber.

65
Hunter Stieber looks heathly, already beating E. Henderson & D. Habat.
Futrell in one semi, other is Hunter vs Nick Dardanes.

70
IMar tech'd Kellen Russell, 11-0
Stacked semis:
Jordan Oliver v Chamberlain and IMar vs Jimmy Kennedy

74
This should shape out interesting
Matt Brown in one semi vs a Russian
Other semi: Chance Marsteller vs A. Dieringer.

Dieringer has two 10-0 techs so far.

86 & 97 are boring. 125 didn't start yet.

Well it is obvious Nick Lee is a talented kid, but man I am confused. A kid who lost his state tithe match last spring just bitch slapped Waters. After spending several months in the Penn State wrestling room and training with the NLWC? I would think the kid who just slapped around the Waters guy would have been able to beat another high school wrestler just last spring.

It's a shame the PSU program lacks the ability to develop kids' wrestling skills.:)
