Bo Bassett thread

Distances from Windber PA:
PSU = 87 mi / 1:30

anOSU = 264 mi / 4:10
Rutger = 281 mi / 4:20
VT = 318 mi / 5:15
Meatchicken = 373 mi / 5:40

Iowa = 758 mi / 11:30

OKST = 1,139 mi / 17:10
Seems like a no brainer, I do 87 miles each way for work.....I wonder if there is room at the inn for a 63 yo 184 with 1 bad shoulder and 2 bad knees.

Personally, I don't understand the big hype around Bassett. He's a good HS wrestler and I don't blame him for enjoying his moment in the sun while everyone is trying to obtain his commitment. But let's be real about things too. I remember about 6 - 7 years ago, everyone was on pins and needles waiting to see where a certain highly sought after PA wrestler would go, and it didn't turn out to be Penn State. He did become a decent college level competitor, but didn't do anything that was considered earth shaking. And on top of that, his participation didn't do anything to significantly boost the status of his selected college program.

So if Penn State lands Bassett, fine. But if we don't, I seriously don't think our overall program is going to be diminished in any way. Our coaching staff seems to do a better job than anyone else of getting the best out of the guys who do end up in blue and white.
I initially took this to mean Chance Marsteller - not Spencer Lee.

Peak clown world:

Adult men worrying about the college choice of one high school kid.

How do we know he's not the next Jimmy Gulibon?
All American Jimmy Gulibon? I see your point but I really wish we didn't continue to disparage a kid who gave it all for the program but didn't win a title. He did take 5th one season

I'm not disparaging him-rather the expectations that are attached to any individual athlete.

I think a lot of people expected multiple NC's. Not a decent career. The point is a lot of high school phenoms don't translate it into the next level.

Decades ago, I was taking some night classes with a guy who gave up a D1 scholly. I asked him why and he said "wrestling was fun until every day somebody was trying to take my head off". He went on with life, and retired from the PSP.

The same principal applies with "can't miss" college football recruits and NFL draft prospects.

Correct. And conversely, some HS guys who people would think never have a chance to win a national title go ahead and do it. There's a good movie on Amazon Prime about one of them. 👍

Not an AP subscriber, so missing the reference.

However, Anthony Cassar couldn't beat out an arguably undersized Rasheed for 197, but then chows down and displaces a full-sized Nick Nevills and takes the 285 NC by beating a guy that put the only stain on his record that year-and in the process is still the owner of the only two marks on Steveson's ledger.

There's still ten weight classes and if Bassett comes to PSU, that will be one more talent competing for a weight, if not, one less.

BTW, speaking of Rasheed, he didn’t win an NC, but everyone would agree that he turned into a decent contender who had a legitimate shot at winning.

What you guys might not know is that he had some personal issues too. He was actually homeless and living on the streets at one point. He and Anthony Robles might share some common experiences.

At one point he was turning guys like a front load washer. If he was just a little bigger, he might have done better.

My nephew and his son went out to Tulsa to a big youth tournament. Coleman Scott was working the room for his new wrestling school.
I think this situation makes the Basset decision more complicated.
If I'm betting he's going to OSU.

Assuming you refer to anOSU (i.e., Ohio State) here, as to my knowledge Coleman Scott is on the anOSU (Ohio State) RTC coaching staff.

Tan Tom and company should not be overlooked as a potential landing spot for Bassett; they might have as good a shot as PSU or Okie State. Those programs will be the three finalists IMO.

I think he’s talking Okie State because that’s where Scott is opening his new wrestling school. I’m not sure how that means it’s more likely for Bo to go there though? Scott and Okie State aren’t on great terms I wouldn’t think

He's opening a training facility called" The Farm"
Taylor expanding his network. No different than what happened near State College.
