Browns.

I slept at a Holiday Inn Express last night, so I am pretty smart. The Browns are rolling the nice on Mayfield IMHO. They always screw it up, I think are bluffing and take another QB at 1.

he may have been talking about Andy Dick....or Dick Trickle

Ha...don't forget former UNC Coach Dick Crum

He’s more of a pocket QB than Manziel who makes plays with his arm as opposed to his feet. He can run but not a crazy scrambler than Manziel was. He played in a much more structured system and can make better throws.

Now I’m not saying that Mayfield is a saint but he’s not the D-bag that Manziel was. Mayfield wasn’t a problem with the coaches like Manziel was. We know of his on field antics which at the Kansas game was somewhat brought on by Kansas at the handshake. Not an excuse, but he is a competitor and he lost his poise.

By all accounts of scouts and such he is much better person during the draft process than Manziel was.
Give him time.

I am an ex-Cleveland Browns fan. The Browns are beyond stupid. Hue Jackson had a horrible record in Oakland and has had a horrible record in Cleveland. (I mean how do you lose all of the games) When Cody Kessler was drafted, he said trust me. (Honestly, Kessler was OK in the beginning, but after he got the crap kicked out of him, he regressed. ) What in the hell is Hue Jackson still doing in Cleveland?

They have basically made the Johnny Manziel mistake twice. Denzel Ward from OSU is a very good player, but he shouldn't have been picked 4th. Thank G, I don't follow these clowns any more.

A comment from a Steeler fan is particularly pertinent. There used to be a rivalry between Cleveland and Pittsburg. Cleveland might be better off if Mayfield retired in that it looks like Manziel all over again.

It's all good sir!

Years ago, I went to the one BIG victory by the Browns over my Steelers.

The 51 - 3 ass-kicking by the Browns.

That was a really long time ago. I moved to Cincinnati from Columbus about 20 years ago, and the Bengals were so bad that I thought that if I was a football fan in Cincinnati rather than following the pitiful Bengals, I would follow OSU. A 9-3 record is awful for OSU, and at the time a 4 - 12 record was typical for Cincinnati. The Browns have way surpassed the Bengals in ineptitude. Would have never thought it was possible. Lunatics in charge of asylum.

Mayfield’s the best quarterback in the draft by a country mile. The Browns could do a lot worse - and somebody certainly will (see: the team that takes Josh Allen).
We'll see. I rank him sixth. After (in order) Rosen, Darnold, Jackson, Allen, and Rudolph.

Obviously Cleveland is more concerned with putting asses in the seats than building a winning team...pick the Heisman winner first (even though he’s not the best offensive player available or the best QB available) and then pick an OSU player with the number 4 pick when he wasn’t the best defensive player available.

Mayfield isn't being meet well by the fan base. Browns would have been much better off to draft a big name if they wanted to put assess in seats. Their analytics has him as the most accurate passer in all the categories;. Clean pocket, under duress and on the run. With rpos they feel he was the best pick. Bills felt that way too and expected to get him at three. Right or wrong, we'll see.

My neighbor is good friends with someone in the front office. Said they didn't want any of the QBs but after passing on Wentz and others the last two years, had no choice. They had Barkley as the best player but didn't want to use a first round pick. They hoped the kid from SDSU would fall to them today, or Michele. They may take Guice today. But they need a WR and an OT. Just a matter of value and who is still on the board. Guice has had some injuries.

I have to applaud Dorsey for being his own man, right or wrong. Darnold was the date pick. Take it for what it is worth.

But Mayfield is the bigger and more recognizable name. People will come to see him whether they like him or not. That’s why I posted they were trying to put asses in the seats. Get the biggest name first then get an Ohio State boy second...seems more PR based than needs based. But hey, it’s the Browns...whatever their reason there’s a good possibility it’s wrong.

we will have to agree to disagree. Almost all of the press had Darnold as the better pick and this was in all of the national and local mock drafts until the day before. I listen to the CLE talk shows and all of them were talking up Darnold and the pick is getting hammered.

I am not saying it was the correct pick, but am saying I respect Dorsey for following his instincts.

BTW, my "source" said that the Browns would NOT have drafted Barkley at 4 if he was there. They were always focused on the DB from tOSU who is from NE Ohio. Again, Browns are bit unique in that they lose all of their FA so part of the reason in drafting a local kid at 4 is that, if he pans out, they have a better chance of retaining him once his rookie contract is up. Again, hard to argue with that reasoning.

They just need to look at what they’ve done in the past and do the opposite.

Apparently Plaxico Burress was quite amused with this pick.

The Browns' front office screwed this draft massively. They had the chance to draft Barkley #1 AND land a franchise QB with 2 of the top 4 picks... they drafted a mediocre QB and decent CB... epic failure.

I think it was a disastrous draft for Cleveland. When you hold the 1st & 4th pick and don't draft anyone considered a top 5 player in the draft you end up being a team that goes winless. Passing on Chubb at 4 was almost as dumb as taking Mayfield

To paraphrase Forest Gump, Cleveland is as Cleveland does.

Browns could have had Barkley and a QB, Chubb and a QB or Barkley and Chubb and all they got was a QB and a CB/S. They definitely showed that they are still the Browns, even with a new GM.

I doubt it. Many people still remember Jabrill Peppers from Michigan and still dislike him being picked. It didn't help that he had a mediocre year. If Mayfield has a poor year or mediocre year he will hear it from the Ohio State fans. If he starts playing really well, they will forget his background. That, of course, is a big if. In light of the Ohio State history, Cleveland is not a great place for Mayfield to start his career.

The best way to put asses in the seats is to win, especially when you haven't finished above .500 for ten years. I have no idea if drafting Mayfield will do that but I think the Browns are picking whoever they think will help them win. History shows they're bad judges at that, but they're trying.

It occurs to me that maybe the Steelers and Ravens are made to look better over a long stretch of time considering they each get to play the Browns and Bengals twice each seasons.

Wow. Had not heard this before, but it is the kind of thinking that illustrates why the Browns have been a losing franchise for so long. The way to keep and attract free agents is to WIN games. Nothing against Ward, but it is a joke to put him on a par with, much less ahead of, Saquon Barkley. Really didn't matter, though, because no way Saquon was gonna make it to No. 4. The Browns just gave the Giants a huge gift.

My sympathies to you and other Browns fans, Obli.

No, the way to keep and attract free agents is to spend money. My team (yes, I'm a minority owner;)) has won a few games (with the exception of last year) and, because they are notoriously cheap, tends to lose quite a few FA. Sure, they occasionally sign a few but they tend to get several compensatory picks every year.

You are, of course, correct. However, this is Cleveland. You have to have the revenue base. When you compete against NY, Chicago, LA, and long time national favorites like Pitt and Dallas it isn't so easy. Evan at that, the losing has been so pervasive, CLE has to over-pay. On top of that, top athletes (outside of #32 for the Cavs) don't want to play here. For example, with NFL salaries fixed, do you think Mayfield or Barkley will make more endorsement money in the next year (regardless of performance)? An endorsement from the local car dealership is peanuts compared to in the 'burbs of NYC, Houston or Dallas.

Finally, and I cannot emphisize this enough, it is CLE. Nobody wants to live here. I don't want to live here. The Mayor doesn't want to live here.

You have to spend the money, without doubt. But lots of teams have money to spend and are willing to spend it. I watched the Warriors flail for frickin' YEARS trying to sign free agents. They offered very competitive free agent packages, but no one wanted to play for Golden State. Their draft strategy was horrific (Todd Fuller rather than Kobe, then some dude named Chris Washburn, who is probably pumping gas as I write this), and that compounded the problem. Only after the team was sold to the present owners did things improve.

Don't know if this is true or not, but I pulled it from another site:

"Baker Mayfield: To wife, this was the Browns new QB. She says that is way to get back @ him for the flag incident"
