Byrd to Illinois

I don’t understand why kids commit before taking all their visits. Is it common that coaches threaten to withdraw offers if they don’t get an immediate answer? Or something like that?

This whole situation seems strange. I only saw the one source with a quote from Byrd. But it said he wanted to visit 10 schools, but was now only going to visit Illinois and PSU, and then he just visits Illinois? I’d be interested to hear if there is more to the story, or maybe he just really like Illinois. Oh well, keep on your diet Brody.

This feels like PSU informed him to not visit because we've had our 125 situation resolved in one way or another. Teske, transfer, who knows but I'd bet something positive has happened.

I'm not saying we rejected him in some way as to put the kid down. Just in my experience of following recruiting, when a kid cancels a visit and commits elsewhere the day before the visit, usually something changed with the school he was to visit. It's not always something negative.

I don’t know if we cooled on him or what but it strikes me as very odd that we can’t seem to lock down a stud 125. Maybe something coming we aren’t aware of but you’d think he’d at least take the visit.

I don't know how common anything is or absolutely anything with how Cael & Co does business, but I've heard some (yes, heard so I'm aware to take it with a grain of salt) wild stories about the pressures put on kids to commit. Coaches not leaving home visits, less-than-flattering messages after the recruit goes a different connection.

Their living depends on HS kids choices sometimes, and that can't be easy, but I really hope I'm getting exaggerations and that some of the texts that I've seen (not major D1 coaches) aren't meant to come across as they did.

Hmmm the curse of the 125 continues. NJ homesick for his mommy, Teske either in handcuffs or ballooning to 133, Byrdless before he even visits.

I have to agree if he bailed on a trip this weekend it must have come from or side.

It can't all be bad Cael always has a plan, and I am hearing Schnupp is beating Nico in the room. Maybe more evidence we are punting next year :)

Ok time to start the Rivera or Meuller transfer rumors...

Come on........Everybody knows that Howard and Byrd are bitter enemies. Howard flatly stated that if he comes.....I'm gone. Cael thought it over and gave Byrd the Bird.

PS: I made up every word of this...…..I just wanted to use Byrd and Bird in the same sentence...….might never get another chance :)

My man, I love your whacked sense of humor. It's almost as bad as mine.
You know how people always stand next to a piece of art and then take a photo of themselves imitating the pose shown by the art? Well, do you think many couples take a butt squeezing photo next to the artwork in your ID photo? I say yes.

This just seems so unlikely -- especially considering we are finalists for both Ferrari and Amos, with Beard and Nevills yet to take the mat.

A much more likely scenario is either (1) Illinois made him an offer he couldn't refuse; (2) he fell in love with the place; (3) he knows people there; (4) Illinois guaranteed a starting spot that Cael won't; (5) he was ready to be done with recruiting (6) Illinois is significantly closer to home -- or some combination of the above.

Or maybe he got pressured and verballed to get them off his back, but thasn't signed anything yet. That's never happened before in college athletics ...

Should note that he still has 3 of his 5 official visits left -- which means he visited Maryland and chose, and then visited Illinois and chose. He's a HS kid, they don't always do what adults would do.

BTW, just because he verballed ... has he actually canceled his PSU visit?

1) Not every kid that has PSU on their "list" of schools will choose PSU
2) The recruiting process can be extremely stressful for recruits and their family
3) These are life-altering decisions for these 17 (or so) year-olds
4) Only the recruit and their parents know exactly why a school is chosen or not chosen, even the coaches rarely know the reasons
5) Life goes on, good luck in this case to young Mr. Byrd

He liked Illinois better. There's nothing wrong with that. 125lbs does seem to be the weight that we have the hardest time with, though. We've had some good 125lbers since Cael arrived but we've had and then lost a lot, too. With the rumors that Teske is no longer an option at 125 and Robbie Howard really looking like a 133lber when he arrives it seems like we may not qualify a guy at 125lbs next year.

I'm still a Devin Schnupp fan. I've seen no sign of the sun coming out today here in happy valley, however, so who knows . . .

I am curious if Willie's and Ames' thinking that we'll soon have a big name come in at the lightweights is still there, though. ;)

I don’t think psu has as much of a 125 pound problem as people think. Just some bad luck mixed with little depth at the weight around the country. How many blue chippers do we see in high school at that range that are can’t miss? That being said, I would think Teske knows if he’s going to consistently see the lineup he knows it’s 125, and that’s where he’ll be.

What is the origin/source of the "Teske is no longer a 125" rumor?
