Civility

It's interesting that, although everyone on this media, share a common bond with each other, we still find ways to insult and alienate each other. We are....Penn State!!! I plead with you to act like it guys.
Agreed for sure, but genteel behavior left many of us with social media and the entitlement age.
I am not a fan of the “ I bought a ticket, I am entitled to say and do whatever I want” approach.

I sent an email to Nate several months ago sharing that sentiment, and never received a response…if it went away, I’d sign up for premium here, but refuse to financially support a site/network that sponsors such a forum.

Good sentiment, but I'd be willing to bet you are outnumbered by other paying customers who insist on having a convenient outlet for venting their spleen.

I'm a member of a couple of other sites, neither sports related or commercial, where the moderators set the rules: no politics, no religion, no vulgarity or name calling. Decisions on what is appropriate are at the sole discretion of the moderators. Complain about them publicly and you're toast. Funding is largely through voluntary contributions by members of the communities. One accepts annual fees from vendors, ho are allowed limited opportunities to promote their products.

Would that model work here? No. In a perverted sort of way, you get what you pay for.

I was a moderator at a sports gambling forum for over a decade…most of those sites were/are overrun with racism/homophobia/personal attacks/etc. We aggressively moderated our forum and didn’t allow any of it, and it was a great place. But we kind of fizzled out through the years, while many of those sites that are cesspools are still going strong.

I believe the monitors should curb this behavior. After all, you're not permitted to attack student athletes/coaches.

Which works until the first time a paying customer complains that his free speech rights are being impinged or that the rest of the community is being deprived of his wisdom.

We are like a family.
At Thanksgiving
With a drunk uncle wHo doesn’t like your politics.
And an grumpy grandfather. Who doesn’t like his perception of the way things should -be challenged.
And let’s not forget the sensitive cousins who get offended about everything. There are people on here who put everyone who has a different thought on ignore…a public message board is probably not the place for them.

Civility on a message board? When has that every happened anywhere and why would anyone expect it? This is where you vent with no ramifications whatsoever.

Was it a profit-making entity? I'd be willing to bet no.

Of the two sites I mentioned earlier, one is still going strong after more than ten years. The other is a shadow of its former self, with the mods constantly scrambling to keep it alive.

well, we've gotten used to politicians and media calling us the vilest names for simply disagreeing on policy. Racist, homophobes, communists, socialists, and so on. I am sorry if someone calls me something as vile as a racist for several years and then says it was just business, that doesn't do it for me. The media has perpetuated it. They constantly take anecdotal information and pretend that it is mainstream or the norm. They'll find someone with a flooded basement and broadcast it as time to build an arc.
DING DING DING!

I think you might be oversimplifying things. The people I have on ignore are, in terms of their political leanings I have ascertained, pretty much split 50/50 down the middle. The people I have on ignore go on and on and on and on and on and don't listen to any reason, don't try to have a honest back-and-forth, say things like, "if you can't see it then I'm not going to tell you what the problem is." There are plenty of right-leaning posters with whom I have an excellent board relationship. We respect each other, we don't bullshit, we understand that there's rarely only one answer. It's all good.

Yes and no…the owner basically used the site a) to find clients and b) to find talented handicappers to add to his staff. But he was a great guy and didn’t want to sponsor a site with crap. And I wouldn’t have been willing to moderate unless it was for someone with the same vision. Unfortunately, seems that most don’t share the same opinion.

I’ve tried my best not to insult or alienate others here, but have to admit, that is not the case on some other media forums that I visit…. Some people are just plain vile.

I don’t put them on ignore because there are things I may agree with them about or things I could learn from them in different threads. There are posters I have had huge disagreements with regarding one thing or another that I turn around and like many of their posts regarding a different topic. If I ignored them, I would miss a lot of their content and even if I disagree with someone, that doesn’t mean they don’t bring some useful information to the table in another thread.

Posters are correct. Typically the aggressive name callers or personal attackers do not know how to make a cohesive argument or rebuttal so they resort to name calling. This is the way of the world today. Politics, sports, and even in the community at large you have a difficult time having an honest debate on important issues because the ones with less firepower (skill, knowledge and facts) automatically resort to personal attacks and name calling. It is really stupid, because it is primarily a result of clear ignorance and/or stupidity. These are usually people who are not successful or have no power, so they use their power to put others down here because it makes them feel good. I have found that it is best just to ignore them and they end up going back down to their mother's basement.

Many of my best friends are totally opposite to my political beliefs and we get along great. We debate and disagree and go have a beer together where we debate it some more. You should never disregard those with whom you disagree, so long as they are not so far gone that they won't even listen. Arguing a point makes you better at making points. Listening to another one's arguments puts you in a position to better understand their argument, even if you continue to disagree. The problem right now is finding people who will debate an issue without resorting to personal attack.

Sure, but there are almost always other posters who can make the exact same points without being dicks. I doubt I’ve ever missed anything significant by having someone on ignore. Even if I did miss something, if I didn’t eventually find about it then what would I have been missing, anyway?

Some people feel that putting posters on ignore is a sign of weakness. To me, it’s a sign of sanity. It makes it possible for me to enjoy myself on this board. I like coming here and rarely find a need to argue. I’m able to keep my presence here as chill as possible.

With some people, Felli comes to mind here, it’s either put them on ignore or quit the board. I like coming here, so I put a certain subset of the board on ignore. And the world keeps on spinning.

I couldn't agree with you more. You hit the nail on the head.

Thanks...it is like someone running a stop sign, drunk, and killing your kid then calling you to apologize weeks later. sorry, its not enough.

Midnighter's biggest fan weighs in yet again. LULZ ...
Maybe you can answer - as you spend a lot of time there - who is promoting a "race war" on the test board?

How does one go about that, anyway?

Why does language like our own Marvel Comic's version of Gene Siskel furballed-out on this thread not get deleted or at least challenged - on a "Civility" thread of all things?

He just accused half the country of promoting a race war, and no one batted an eye here. Because he posts pictures of skanky women, I guess.

I spend more time on the test board than here because sports has little true affect on me and mine. Politics does. There are people of all persuasions there and they link to various sources which helps me understand issues better.

I have about twenty people on ignore. The criteria for doing so is anyone calling conservatives racist or Nazi. If that is all you got you do have enough to be taken seriously. Sadly, some of them post here and I miss those posts too but that is the cost of their being a fool.

Yes too many are over the top. I have lectured several on the right to be less confrontational. And I hate when people get into long back-and-forths each trying to out wise crack the other in some internet attempt to swing a bigger d:ck. Sad but that is our modern world and internet.

I always suspect that someone with no "dog in the fight," that just jumps in on a thread to mock it, telegraphs the fact that they have zero life, no friends, no family, coworkers (if they even have a job) do not want anything to do with them. I figure they come home, turn the TV on and loathe in their own misery! If they were not so pathetic, I'd feel sorry for them!!!

Thank you for confirming this thread. Well done.

I’m not going to go that far. I do sometimes question what their motives are, or how well they really understand the situation. But you can’t see what is truly in the poster’s heart. I try not to judge, or I try to at least hold back from showing it in my posts.

I myself try to post only when I am convinced that both my motives and my understanding are genuine. Or else I’m responding to either Bob or Woodpecker.

I do not recall any posts from Midnighter explicitly or impliedly advocating a "race war," either here or on the Test Board. But tell you what: bring your accusations over to the Test Board - where people quite rightly expect more argument and less civility - and we can discuss it there. I make a sincere effort to avoid political issues while on this Board, and hope that you will do the same. (My recollection is that you generally do.)

I blame topic view. It is a perfect environment for a prolonged back-and-forth that descends into personal attacks.

If you compare thread view in the Ozone, you see nowhere near the same level of personal attacks. Instead they all unify in their hatred for Kerry Coombs
I agree with this, at least on some level, I'm used to it, but not sure why we couldn't have options for both.

There is a reason he is called another name on the asshat board....he and another poster here are there all the time. They spend hours there wasting days away...I go for the belly laffs that they provide...
