I'm sorry everyone, I won't be at clarion this weekend. My grandfather passed away today and his funeral is Sunday :(
So sorry for your loss. Condolences to your family. Condolences to your wrestling family from here that won't get to hang out with you. Peace to you and your family

What are the matches to look out for at each weight?

Looks like Hall from WVU at 165 is ranked #17 by Wrestlestat. R12 guy last year. If Facundo is on the level we think he'll be at, he'll beat him.

Brent Moore at 149 is #18, per Wrestlestat. Same thing for SVN.

Steen could have Curry or Werner, or both.

The registrations on Flo Arena for PSU:

125 - Gary Steen (Unattached)
125 - TBD
133 - David Evans (Unattached)
133 - TBD
141 - Sean Wang (Unattached)
141 - TBD
149 - Shayne Van Ness (Unattached)
149 - TBD
157 - TBD
165 - Alex Facundo (Unattached)
165 - Brian Borden (Unattached)
165 - TBD
174 - Jack Kelly (Unattached
197 - Lucas Cochran (Unattached)
174 - Jack Kelly (Unattached)

This implies they're sending six attached guys from 125 thru 165, but it could just be that they registered those slots to give themselves options and won't actually send six, or any.

Hall is a decent measuring stick. Obviously, it's still early, so even if he loses, no need to panic. If he beats him convincingly that's a good sign.

Brent Moore on the other hand isn't a great measuring stick imo. He quit the sport 2 years ago and is making a comeback at a new school. It's hard to predict what level he'll be at. SVN will need to be mindful of his cow catcher. That's his main thing and a reason he's been really inconsistent at the college level. He did pin Sasso once fwiw. No matter what the result is here, I don't know if you can really make much of it.

Things change very quickly re. open tournament registrations. Latest word is that only redshirts are going.

Wouldn't SVN and Facundo both be RS? They were both registered as Unattached.

So does that mean no SVN or Facundo?
The list given to me by the coaches included both of those wrestlers, plus Steen, Wang, Borden, and Cochran. Again, please keep in mind how quickly things change. Sadly, I am tied up at another wrestling-related affair, and can't make this tournament. Would love to see these kids as they show the first evidence from being in the PSU room ... and the upward climb after Sunday!

Hey Wang! It’s just a parking lot!

As I've said before, SVN has been in the room since January.

I hope he's been getting his face mashed by Zain and Nick and can get off bottom now. That, and he's cleaned up some of his Joe Lee-esque wildness.

If can get off bottom and doesn't put himself in bad positions, regularly, his natural talent will put him in a great spot.

Interesting that you chose Joe Lee. I wouldn't have. First year "wildness" by a wrestler named Bo would be my pick. Some here didn't like it, and let their warped opinions known. Fortunately Bo knew exactly what he was doing, and the coaches did too.

I suppose I should re-phrase. That might not have been the best comparison.

Joe Lee's wildness, as a guy who has been in the program for several years, is something that was/is a cause for concern. How much of that was due to his injury? I don't know. Hopefully at 157 and with a healthy knee, that will go away.

SVN was a HS senior last year, and his matches that I've seen are typical elite HS kid matches; he's not Kyle Dake yet. The coaches will reign that in, help him build better habits/position and that will make a huge difference. Maintaining better position + SVN's natural talent = winner.

At least he now knows you have him pegged for a steady weight gain.

Curry lost his wrestle-off to Colton Camacho 6-1.

Hall was a true freshman last year and could have easily went 157. He’s out on a little muscle so they should be about the same size. Style wise it’s a nice matchup for Facundo. Hall likes to score from the outside. Has a nice ankle pick. If he was a hammer on top I’d be more worried about Facundo this early in the season. Should be a descent scrap if they face each other.

No need to overreact to any growing pains tomorrow. As another example, recall Keaton Subjeck throwing VJ to his back twice in a dual meet. Things turned out okay that year, including a very controlled win over Subjeck in the tournament

win or lose, i think the important thing is to see some offense from facundo. you know he can defend. you want to see him score against top 25 talent. if i were a psu fan, i'd almost rather see him lose a few times early putting himself in bad position offensively because offensive growth is the key to him scoring points in march.

I think that’s a fairly generic take. Not every wrestler, even if they are a Nittany Lion under Carl’s tutelage, will be an offensive machine like Nolf or Nickal. Facundo can score a ton of points in March if his defense is all-world. Starocci won many low scoring, defensive battles on his way to beating Kemerer and becoming a National Champion.

Those are not incompatible positions. And it should be noted that Starocci is not national champ because of his defense -- that put him in position to win all of those close matches. He won by scoring when he needed to against the best wrestlers in the country.

Facundo does not need to develop Nolf offense, but he does need to develop the ability to score against the very best.
