clemson vs. Tosu -- Sugar Bowl/CFP Semifinal game thread

I disagree it was a good call. Fields spun which contributed to the helmet striking fields in the back.

This is not hard to understand, there is not one single variable that matters if you lower your head and hit someone with the crown of your helmet. By rule, targeting every single time.

With that being said, they missed a clear one earlier on OSU lineman on a short Etienne run. Lawrence seemed to be the only one who noticed.

If you lead with the crown of your helmet, it is targeting. If your eyes are looking at the ground, it’s targeting. It is literally the worst way to tackle. Not really for the offensive player. It is for the safety of the defenders. Leading with crown of helmet compresses the spine and is not safe. The hit wasn’t dirty, but it is 1000% illegal

Looking at the disparity of what posters here think of targeting versus no targeting tells me that the criteria used is very subjective and something needs to be done to develop better and more clear cut criteria or just get rid of it, period.

Listening (watching) to the broadcast, since don’t have ESPN. It’s basically a radio broadcast and you get the video feed but no replays. They are really pissed at the targeting call.

Nah, it’s the fact that most people here have no idea what they’re talking about

Fields head and body literally snapped back when he was hit. That was brutal and i was surprised no flags were thrown. Review had it right.

Right now OSU looks like the fresher team. We can criticize Swinney but there is some truth about playing 6 games verses 12 big big difference.

I'd say crisper, but Clemson doesn't look tired. I think Dabo said too much. Clemson O really missing Higgins and Justin (NFL, medical retirement). Also missing Ladson (so). Forced to play a 5th year senior who is on the field because of circumstances and a true freshmen.

Defense was missing a guy in the secondary, and starting 2 true freshmen on the DL. #1 LB now gone isn't going to help.

Is there a reason clemsons OC who has covid can’t be in a booth by himself calling plays? It would be easy enough for him to be zoomed in for meetings for the week and then have his own spot calling plays via headsets. This seems so crazy that he can’t be any part of this.

They need to get Fields out of the game and at least checked out more thoroughly. He is in bad shape.

The criteria is pretty clear. The fact that fans don’t understand it is sort of irrelevant. There are different targeting fouls. If you lead with the crown of the helmet it doesn’t make a different where you hit the offensive player. There are other fouls, like launching or forcible contact with head.

Perhaps you don’t understand the rule?
I completely understand that it’s the rule but it’s a flawed rule. I can understand helmet to helmet and fully support that rule change, but that was a great hit that should not be a penalty. There has to be a consequence for scrambling or else you’re going to get triple digit scores.

This isn't a "new" rule. You could never lead with the crown of your helmet. This dude does it habitually.

#10 with his head up and a solid hit on JF, perfectly legal.

#47 could have done his completely legal if his head was UP.

JF turning changed the hit from belly button to side.

"Targeting" has only been around since 2013, but "spearing" (which is what happened on that play) was banned in the mid-1970's, as a result of the spinal injuries incurred by players ducking their heads and leading with the top of their helmet like a "spear." Spearing is part of the targeting rule.
