Collegiate Duals 2.0

So if any number 1 ranked wrestler sits out a match, is that a duck?
Nope..

Not ducking...
1. Someone hurt (meaning they haven't wrestled)
2. Match against lopsided opponent (to give a backup some time or to heal something minor or sickness)

I tend to side with most people don't duck..so don't get me wrong here.

That being said, when you wrestle against a weak opponent and then sit 2 hours later against a tough opponent (please don't give me a ranking, people know who's tough or not, and ducking prevents people like Haines to improve his ranking), I call it out as it is..a duck.

Now if AOC hurt himself in his first match yesterday and doesn't wrestle today..I would retract my duck comment

What determines a weak opponent? Unranked? Ranked more than 10 spots lower? This board? HR? Cael? TnT?

Figure it out genius..
I’m just making a point ducking is completely subjective. Everyone can have their own opinion but unless you are the head coach or have inside knowledge, no one knows for sure. On a side note, I’m a little terrified about what’s going to happen on Jan 27 at the BJC based on results so far.

TBF, I work in IT and have been trained in how to press the pause button, and then, later, the play button, once the Byers call caught up to the video.

(I don’t actually work in IT)
But I bet you staying in a Holiday Inn express last night!!

I'm curious? Why? I think it won't be close at Nationals, but can definetly see a good dual. Based off rankings you're favored in 5 matches..125,141,149,157 and 165. Why be terrified?

for me it's a vibe thing. felt it all last year and ended in a disastrous postseason. i have the same vibe now. not enough offense. little to no noticeable improvement. feels like a dud team to me. i've made my frustrations known on this a few times now.

Lee should get bonus against Steen
RBY minimum of TF against whoever we put out there
Woods should win by decision
Murin struggles against athletic guys and Van Ness has plenty of athleticism. Will be surprised if Murin wins.
157. Toss up, if Haines goes probably slight favorite to you guys
165. Toss up
174. Bonus
184. Bonus
197. Slight edge to Dean
285. Edge to Kerk.

Sounds like a great dual. Not something I’d be terrified about..

Plus Teske and RBY are friends. I can see him taking it easy on him with a cool MD win..😀

Exactly. Just don’t get the feeling that this Iowa team can rise above the pressure. Too many conservative styles.

i think i'd be surprised if they were a trophy team honestly. they have no sure things. even spencer. haven't seen enough of him to have faith he'll be his old self and/or stay healthy. woods and warner are good, but don't have enough consistent offense to be top 4 locks. murin could aa, but probably won't. he's been the 9th or 10th best guy at his weight for 4 years. i don't know how much more juice he can squeeze out of himself. nothing at 133. siebrecht is a pinner, but could easily go 0-2. artalona was dominating him before getting rolled through. kennedy is maybe good, but at a brutal weight full of guys who pose specific match up problems. i have a feeling he's a r12 guy. assad is assad. top 15 with r12 upside. can't finish on anybody good. cass's ceiling is 3rd unless both parris and kerk end up on the other side somehow. schultz will also be a problem due to size. davison could be a problem too. i think he'll get pinned by somebody below him this year. he's had too many positional brain farts that he's somehow escaped - looking right into nearside cradles specifically. somebody will make him pay eventually. i miss fat tony.

Agreed. Based on the “eye test” so far, not much to get excited about.

my glass half full outlook is that we've seen them look really good in the regular season and underperform in march, so maybe this year they'll look like garbage all year and then actually peak at ncaa's.

Is ... this a joke? I get maybe not believing you can win but there isn't a better tournament team than Iowa if you don't name PSU lol.

As long as Spencer doesn't have any setbacks and keeps improving cardio, he'll win 125 and pick up bonus until the finals. Woods is arguably the favorite at 141, not a sure sure thing but if he doesn't place Top 4, he had a very bad tournament. Warner has never missed the podium, he's improved his finish every year (but hopefully that trend doesn't continue lol). I actually think Assad is wrestling like an AA level guy so far this season also. Kennedy seems like a pretty sure thing to AA, he'll probably pick up some bonus along the way. Cass is a bonuser also.

Agree 133, 157, 174 points are likely gravy. Murin is all heart but I sometimes wonder if his body just breaks by Day 2 of a tournament (which is why he always quarter slides out) combined with the season.

we've seen 1 match from woods and he lost the takedown battle. it's a hard way to live. i think warner places, but could as easily place 7th as make the finals again. assad look exactly the same to me. he was never close to scoring on coleman who is a fringe aa guy himself. i like kennedy, but don't love him. at a normal weight i'd agree, but 165 is nuts and full of scramblers who will give him problems.

maybe i'm giving other teams too much credit, but i don't have any faith in this team to perform close to it's peak because i haven't seen it in over a decade.

Incredible commitment to the reverse jinx.

I'll stick to my preseason guess on Iowa. 0-1 champs and 5 or 6 AAs.

Lol. Seriously tho, JS is awesome over on HR. At times he's hated more than I am. It's one thing to hear realistic expectations from an opposing fan but to hear them from one of your own is even worse. I give him credit, he doesn't shy away from giving his honest opinions there.

Murin, I don't think his body breaks. When Max is wrestling well he is out toughing his opponent. By the time you get to the quarters and the blood round everybody is tough and winning simply on toughness is, well "tough" to do.

Agree. And Max has been good at ncaa's. His 6 losses are Nick Lee, Chad Red, Boo Lewallen (OT), Jaden Abas (OT), Yianni, and Jon Jon Millner. All six of those guys are more skilled than him. all of his r12 matches were wars. he just wasn't skilled enough to score when it counted. And the Lewallen/Abas losses were when he had Mono - not joking this was confirmed by Brands. Didn't even practice between Big Tens and NCAA's.

And his wins are good too. Beat Moran and Carr his freshman year. Ridge Lovett his sophomore year. Gfeller last year. He's right there.

He drinks White Claw. I'm guessing he stays in nothing less than a Marriott or some uppity shit like that.

Oh, and he actually uses the on-site gym while he's there because he watches his waistline...
You had me at, “uppity shit”.

Man, can Gibbons suck off Michigan anymore than he did??? That was close to going from
PG-13 to R to X rated material….
How can you not love 14 points of torture before the pin. As Martha Stewart used to say durning her wrestling days before prison, 'it's a good thing'.

Michael Beard has wrestled #9 Trumble and #8 Truax and will be getting # 14 Gavin Hoffman today. Pretty tough weekend......finishing up against the guy he and Penn State have a history with. Go Michael! Dean got HM Max Shaw and gets #2 Yonger Bastida today. Go Max!

Update: Beard defeats Hoffman by a score of 5-3 .....Beard had the only 2 takedowns
