Colorado has had 56 kids (or so, people have lost count) transfer so far

Just saw that Colorado has only 16 returning scholarship players on their roster this year. There will be 69 new scholarship players this season. 😳

I thought there was a limit to the numbers of scholarships a school could give out in a year. Am I living in the past? Also bringing in 69 in one year just means processing more out next year to make room for more newbies. That doesn't sound like a program that would be attractive to talented kids.

That’s what I thought as well. Just saw a tweet from a Colorado reporter that gave the numbers.

I was thinking Deon had to show ultra loyalty to his players next year but that’s going to be hard to do. He’s clearly going to have to take people this year he normally wouldn’t just to fill spots. That means more processing next year.

He’s setting himself up to be the coach who dumps his players and shows no loyalty which will be used against him on the recruiting trail.

But kids likely just want to play for him...at least the kids he wants. I don't think this is even remotely an issue.

Now up to 23 kids gone from Colorado since their spring game Saturday.

They currently have 63 scholarship players and 22 open spots on the roster.

I wouldn’t go that far without knowing more about why they left. It’s just too early.

Right now Boulder worships Deon even though he’s done nothing other than some brash talk. If he starts losing then I could see him lose the team with his antics. They start out at TCU, Nebraska, Colorado St, at Oregon, and USC. He goes 0-5 or 1-4 and the folks in Boulder will go back to ignoring CU football.
Doesn't take much. Back in the early 90's when they were very good, it was a very easy ticket

I thought Deion was basically getting rid of the kids who weren't Power 5 caliber since the BUffs were so bad last year but this is a classless move.

I thought it was weird that he brought multiple JSU kids with him. Hunter and his son, sure. The rest? They were at that level for a reason. But maybe it wasn't as many as I thought. (I don't know how many)

Is film from practice something that is usually given to kids leaving?
I have no idea--honest question
I'd be hesitant to release any film of my team's practices

I thought there were six but I may have missed some

What exact footage does he want? Spring practice? Summer/fall of '22? Anything pre-Deion he shouldn't care to release, but I have zero clue about how this works. First I've seen it mentioned. New age portal problems I guess.

Probably 4 too many lol

LOL--definitely a few too many
And, yeah, this seems like a new issue. I'd release film from before I arrived but nothing from spring. But is that fair to the kids? Is that what other schools do? This is all very complicated.

I dunno. I mean, they get to go and come as they please now. They can get paid. Now somebody has to isolate their film and email it so they can get another offer?

Very complicated for sure.

His son and the 5 star freshman are kids who definitely belong (though I dont think his kid is as good as he does) and I would assume after a couple years Deion would know of a few others who could compete at a power 5 level. After all, there are kids who get drafted from lower level schools, and I don think Deion expects them to compete for titles right away so he probably told the guys who he knew he needed for this year to come too.

Which is a shame because it’s a pretty unique stadium and setting for football. I really like going to games there, even though they haven’t been very good recently.

Exactly, these people saying that's no big deal because of the portal are full of it. It's an immense challenge to turn over that much of your scholarship roster (i.e., 85%, or so - and it may end up being more) and even field a "cohesive" team. Imagine this many new players all attempting to learn the offensive and defensive playbook at the same time. Given the amount of turnover, Colorado could look like the Keystone Cops on both sides of the ball.

Good point, but the likelihood of him having 5+ HBCU kids who can play P5 level is just minimal unless he's got a great eye for underrated talent. Hunter doesn't really count, NIL bought him. His son neither. A couple kids put JSU in their top 5s but I don't remember him hitting on any other P5 prospects.

Obviously, coaching is very cutthroat, but what was the point of Prime bringing so many guys with him from JSU? Obviously, guys like Travis Hunter can play anywhere (based on potential at least), but the talent gap between whatever conference JSU plays in and the PAC12 is beyond substantial. The vast majority of those kids had no chance seeing the field at Colorado from the get go.

Up to 51 have transferred out of Colorado now.

Again, this kind of turnover is going to make this coming season very difficult for Colorado. And for those who say that he's bringing most of his "playing team" from JSU.... - give me a break, no way is Prime going to win playing the core of his JSU squad at the FBS P5 level.

Sounds like Deion is telling them to leave not that they're running from something

"Coach Prime just told me up front, 'We have plans to go another way. You competed. You did everything we wanted you to this spring, and you fought,'" transferring safety Jeremy Mack Jr. said.

It does seem like he and the rest of coaches made it clear to the returning players that he didn't want them there. The one criticism I would have about Prime is I'm not sure he even gave most of them a chance--he just wanted them gone.

I thought our sanctions were bad, but Deion is sanctioning himself far worse. Good luck with the fcs roster! I feel bad for the former players. They will play with a chip on their shoulders for the rest of their career. Hope we get that wr!

yea, we have difficulty fielding a cohesive offensive line with players who have been in the program for 3 years

great place to see a Dead show as well.........

I'm sure most folks here aren't fans of Pat McAfee but he had Coach Prime on yesterday's show and some of his comments cut straight to the bone. He compared the roster turnover to moving into a new place - you have to get rid of the old furniture and clutter before bringing in the new/fancy furniture. And towards the end he made the comment that their spring game was the "Genesis" of the program - and what comes after "Genesis" in the bible? Exodus. He went off on that for awhile again comparing the guys leaving to the Exodus, all the while saying to just wait to see the kids he's bringing in. It's a good interview that if you're interested in the whole situation I'd encourage you to check out -

He'll also be getting another season of Coach Prime on Amazon. So I mean I can understand why kids want to play for the guy, but it's one heckuva an experiment and we'll see what happens.

Just to clarify one thing--Deion isn't trying to win 10 games this year--he's trying to tear down a program that has been garbage and start over. If they go 3-9 this year that's fine if those kids develop and they're ready to be cohesive next year. See Venables in Oklahoma despite all their success prior to him. You get one year to build something. He thinks it's best to start clean. Right or wrong it's his program and his job on the line.

I think I’m beginning to follow Deon’s plan. He’s finished Genesis and now in Exodus. I’m guessing when his team flops he will talk of wandering in the wilderness and use that as his excuse for the bad seasons that will follow. I’m sure he’ll tell everyone to be patient as he’s taking them to the promised land.

Someone might want to tell Deon that CU fans will not have the patience for 40 years of wandering in the college football wilderness. ;)

Easy for him to be patient as he collects on his multi-million dollar contract....

True. Someone might also want to tell Deon to read ahead 1 chapter before he stops at Exodus and gets too full of himself. Leviticus is all about rules, morality, and law- as well as the punishment that follows. It’s pretty much an early version of an NCAA rule book. ;)

The other thing that people are ignoring is that many of the players he brought with him from JSU are among the players who have entered the Portal. Very hard to keep the teams attitude positive with this kind of destruction occurring all around the program including "new" players that Primetime recruited to follow him to Colorado from JSU.

Venables wasn't hired to turn that roster over...was he? (Narratives change, i don't follow OU save for my gym buddy) Granted, Riley took some key roster players, but nobody expected the sharp dive into .500 territory.

Riley took a lot and a bunch of other kids left. It wasn't the intent but turned into the only option if that makes sense.

Losing players from a team that finished 1-11 is not what I would call destruction. Also, losing a former player from Jackson State is not like losing a former player from Alabama.

In the proper context, cleaning house and getting rid of second rate talent is a good thing. Colorado needs to have those scholarships available for better talent.

You don't turn-around a program by throwing the baby out with the bath-water. Prinetime has relegated Colorado to sucking for at least 3 years..... and probably more as it is going to be difficult to recruit without showing some sign of success and a light at the end of the tunnel. How precisely do you explain a story like this:

Upshaw (a former Michigan 2-Deep D-back who saw significant action in all games last year) transferred to Colorado this offseason, but appears to already have had enough of Boulder. He’s back in the transfer portal, one semester into his tenure there.

Sanders brought Upshaw on board as one of his "new" talented players and he's transferring out of Colorado after less than one Semester there (and only one Spring Practice with Primetime)???
