Dantonio punted with 148 left on the clock.. for those talking about the field goal.

They were on our side of the field. And yes they could have and should have gone for it with that much time left. Amazing to punt

MSU also was facing an offense that almost never can "seal the deal" by getting a first down or two to win the game, like UK did.

But - weren't *we* the offense in both scenarios? So, MSU and Dantonio are smart for punting because they knew we couldn't get a first down, but we're dumb for kicking the FG because we could get a first down or TD on 4th and long?

At the time we played them we were the number 2 offense in the country!!

yep. MSU punted and stopped Psu and got the ball back and scored a td.

What do you think now of the field goal call.

It still sucks. It will suck tomorrow. It will suck next week. It will suck next month. It will suck next year. It will suck as long as anyone remembers the details of this game.

Simply put, should have run a play. The scenario board would tell you as much

Kicking the field goal was the same as running a play and failing. In either scenario, you are losing and still need to come up with a defensive stop and also score.

Making a first down and subsequent TD puts you in the lead and now only have to make a defensive stop

That is an easy decision, go for it on 4th down. Papa 9 thought it was wrong to kick field goal as well.

Who is to say Kentucky wouldn’t have taken it right down the field and scored a field goal.

Yes, and in the Rose bowl last night Washington punted when down tow scores late in the game. There is always room to criticize when it doesn’t work out, regardless of what decision was made

I thought the FG call was the right call. We had all 3 timeouts and 4 minutes left. We had bottled up Kentucky on offense for the majority of the game.....that was a good call, pulling us to within 3 points.

I understand the reasoning behind the FG. I'm not saying I agree, but I understand it. The D was playing well in the 4th quarter and had momentum and the PSU fans in the stands going crazy. I did not sit for much of the 4th quarter. Kicking the field goal puts you in the position to get a three and out on D. And sets you up for only needing a FG to tie and force OT or getting a TD for the win. Unfortunately it didn't work out that way.

So MSU punted with a 4th and 6 at the PSU 15? If the goal is to tie the game and play for overtime, you kick the field goal. If your goal is to win the game you go for it on 4th down. Also noteworthy is the bowl is an exhibition who's outcome has no consequences. A regular season game has impact on where you go in the post season.

Both scenarios require the defense hold them. I trust Trace with a hot hand over our field goal team which failed twice earlier.

Not quite accurate - kicking the field goal gives you a chance to win, or tie and go to OT. The key is getting the ball back, which we couldn't do.

Yep, only needed a field goal to tie. Give credit to Kentucky, they did what they needed to do.

The field goal wasn’t a bad call. Or certainly wasn’t an awful call.

IMHO, the FG call yesterday was a toss up.
1. Take the 3 with 4:00 to go, hold UK and only need to get close enough for a 2nd FG attempt if a TD doesn't happen.
2. Go for it on 4th and you either have a lead, or you pin UK at the ~15, hold them and then get a 2nd shot for a TD with good field position.

The egregious call was the fake punt on the 1st series on your own 35. The reward was no where near the risk in that position and time of the game.

Yep, and also would have allowed PSU to run more time off the clock before the TD, which would have set UK up to have to do something besides run the ball on offense, which they didn't seem too good at (i.e. the passing game...)

i also understand the logic, and it did not seem that bad at the time. hard to believe Pinegar doesn't make it, and we were holding them pretty nice without them being one dimensional. I fully expected 3 and out and a punt, and that Trace would lead them down the field for at worst a FG to tie. i was shocked when Ky could just run up the middle and move the ball when everyone knew what was going to happen. that was just who wanted it more effort.
