O'Connor was a top 10-ish recruit in the same year as Spencer, Yianni, Arujau, Fix, Nick Lee, Warner, Berge, Romero, Gomez, and Labriola.

Iowa also never called Aaron Brooks, so not sure that reflects on O'Connor. (They actively tried to poach him from UNC, go figure.)

This doesn't diminish the job Scott did with him. O'Connor still won 2 titles, and might have won 3 if healthy.
pure speculation on this, but AOC was the same size as Nelson at the time and they might not have seen a spot for him. Frustrating, if true. AOC was apparently very interested in the hawks.

Incredibly frustrating if true.

If you had said Kemerer (who was at the same weight), that would've been more understandable.

IIRC Marinelli also started at 157. Clearly one of those two had to move up, and a 3rd high-end guy with multiple overlap years might not have been a priority.

also lugo as a transfer. it's not the most indefensible move, but it definitely didn't work out.

Scott would be a great hire for PSU. Fits in perfectly with Kennedy leaving and no better place to rehab your image than at PSU. I assume Scott still wants to be head coach at a major program so coming to PSU and learning from the best while winning a few team titles should set him up well to coach a big program again. I wonder if he regrets leaving UNC?

I lost a lot of room to talk when I heard @vhsalum say Cael said thanks but no thanks to Keegan
That's puzzling. I wonder what it was about KOT's game Cael didn't like? They seem like a match made in heaven to me. DT was my comparison for KOT as a prospect.

Lugo announced his transfer after O'Connor's HS SR season ended. Presumably O'Connor had conmiitted to UNC long before Lugo became a factor.

Is that a mathematical top 10-ish number or a Rutgres top 10-ish number?

If a coach comes in and learns many of Cael’s ways and soon leaves to compete against PSU using Cael’s ways, then maybe that would NOT be a great hire for PSU? 🧐

the bank i work for deletes you from the system on your last day. I worked for a guy who deleted a women the moment she resigned , I remember she was upset as she never got a chance to send a goodbye email on her last day. Was a bit funny seeing her say why couldn't you wait till i left the building.
This is why I'll quit working many years before my last day. 😉

Fair enough. Just seems like other than Casey and Cody guys with PSU ties are going to soon start branching out throughout the coaching ranks. I think Scott is a really good coach and would fill a need at PSU right now. I would also love to see Nolf get that job

Saban's misfit toys haven't hurt Alabama yet, and it looks like none will except maybe Sark at Texas.

Alabama has profited massively and disproportionately from that arrangement.

Not including Smart because he was a normal rise thru the ranks guy.

Gilman makes a lot of sense. His presence in the PSU room has been cited as a huge positive by so many guys, and not just lightweights. Wouldn't have guessed at the time that the intense 125er at Iowa jumping into other teams' huddles was coaching material.

It's testimony not only to DT's reputation but to how good the PSU/NLWC room is that OSU hired a guy with zero D1 coaching credentials and his second hire is another guy with zero D1 coaching credentials, and there's practically no skepticism about whether it will all work out. DT likely has a lot of good options but picking Gilman speaks well of him.

It does have the benefit of preventing the company-wide email where the bitter employee airs all their grievances from their miserable career : )

They will love him in like 2 weeks. I don't think it took me that long, and I despised him at Iowa.

I see why Coleman Scott is being suggested. It's about weight need, Cody handles 125-141, Kennedy handled 149/157, Casey 165-174, Cael 184 and up.

So right now we need a 149/157 guy, biggest feather in Coleman Scott's cap as a coach? Austin O'Connor, who won at both 149 and 157 and he wasn't some can't miss recruit either (Iowa wasn't interested despite the fact he was an Izzy kid) This is in addition to the fact he would be EXTREMELY motivated right now.
