Drexel dual - Sun, Nov 17

I’m willing to admit my optimism on Alex took a big hit there. Just low energy, and still not much set up to attacks. Cut might be a factor: he was wrecking dudes if that caliber previously.
If the cut is a problem now it’s not likely to get much better in 2 or 3 day weigh-ins for tournaments.

It's early season to be wrestling on consecutive days. Yesterday's match could have had a big impact on his energy level.

TBF the whole team has looked pretty rusty.
200.gif

Can't make any judgment on Davis. He looked fine until his knee was hurt early in the match. The knee clearly bothered him the rest of the way.

Backup at 141. Naseo at 141 was out-muscled and out-experienced by his opponent. But again, a backup in his first college dual meet.

Another backup (Pierce) at 149.

Facundo was underwhelming at 157 and looked like the same guy from two seasons ago. Gotta believe the cut to 157 isn't helping.

Quit sweating Kasak-Facundo. Cael knows what the hell he’s doing. He’s not going to screw with Kasak knowing that DT will be circling like a buzzard for an upgrade at 157.
Nailed it. Every coach will be calling Kasak if he is upset cause of a forced red shirt.

No doubt Cael weighs wrestle offs, but there are other factors in his decisions. My money is still on Kasak.

197- Lucas Cochran vs. Ethan Wilson

Period 1:
Here we go. Cochran with a quick throw-by to a single & gets the TD, 3-0, Wilson to his feet, but Cochran takes him back to the mat hard. Cochran riding tough, gets a cheap tilt & picks up 4 NF, 7-0. Wilson gets the escape or gets cut & it's 7-1. Wilson shoots for a leg, but Cochran fights it off. Cochran in on a leg, keeps working & gets the TD, 10-1. Period 2:
Cochran takes down. He has +2:19 in RT. Wilson lets him up, 15-1. Cochran quickly in on a leg, elevates it, keeps working & gets the TD for the TECH. That was impressive! That's the fourth technical fall in a row & Cochran did it the quickest of them all.

Lucas Cochran TECH Ethan Wilson 18-1 (3:27)

Team score 35-3

The difference between Kasak and Alex is very notable regardless of what some room result says. Who do you trust at NCAAs more right now?

I feel bad but the reality is Alex hasn’t progressed, which is heartbreaking because the kid does all the right things off the mat and is very coachable but simply put, he hasn’t implemented in match adjustments. With the cut to 157 for a season, I think it’s more likely he regresses.

Personally I hope coaches just have him eat and be happy and be good depth at 165/174 this season. Afterwards wish him the best if he pursues other options.

285- #1 Greg Kerkvliet vs. Tanner Updegraff

Period 1:
Kerk time. Here we go. Tying up, Kerk working a 2 on 1 & they break. Kerk with a drag & quick TD, 3-0, then cuts him immediately, 3-1. Circling & tying up. Kerk coming forward, snaps & comes behind for another TD, 6-1, Kerk riding, Updegraff bellied out now. Kerk looking tilt & gets a 4 NF, 10-1, then Kerk rolls him over & gets the FALL

Greg Kerkvliet FALL Tanner Updegraff (1:40)

Final Team Score: 41-3

The match of firsts.

125: LL gets his first win in Rec Hall. Wish we could have seen him go.

133: First chance to see Davis at his new weight. Was looking good until the knee tweak. I figured that was gonna be it for him but the match continues. He never really looked the same after the injury timeout. Was way more reserved. So, first half of the match I liked what I seen, second half not so much, but it was fairly obvious he wasn't 100%.

141: Cael Nasdeo get his first match at Rec Hall. I really like the effort, seemed to run out of steam towards the end of the match. Nerves, adrenaline dump, etc probably all played a factor. He wrestled from whistle to whistle and it was fun to watch.

149: Connor Pierce gets his first match at Rec Hall. Pierce has some excellent defense and scrambling abilities. The last scramble was probably 30-45 seconds, and with maybe 5 seconds left I thought he as gonna give it up but somehow he got one of his legs away. Another competitor and a fun match to watch.

157: Alex Facundo's first match at his new weight. There were rumors of a wrestle off between him and Kasak where Facundo controlled the entire match. After watching Kasak last night and Facundo today, I'm not sure if I believe that. I'm not gonna write off any wrestler after one match. It will be interesting to see how this plays out throughout the year. Here are my thoughts on this match alone. There were a lot of similarities between Facundo this year, and Facundo 2 years ago. I don't really know another way to put it. Like stated above, it'll be interesting to see how this plays out.

165: MM. If anyone was wondering, his pace hasn't slowed. 4 shots, 1 reattack in the first period. 3/4 converted for a takedown. I think when starting neutral, within 5 seconds of the whistle, he was on the legs. The 3 pt takedown is really going to favor someone like him. I think he may be adding to the short list of guys who have bonused their way through the NCAA tournament. Could possibly have 100% bonus rate.

174: Levi looks like a full grown 74. Either he hit a big growth spurt or he was cutting a lot of weight last year. I guess it could be a combination of the both. Looked great last night controlling the entire match, and builds on that this afternoon. Extremely tough on top and looks like he's having a blast. Kudos to Janda for fighting off his back at the end.

184: Carter looks like a full grown 84. Sporting a head wrap from the cut he suffered last night, he secures the third straight tech.

197: Lucas Cochran. I'm not sure if this is his first match in Rec Hall or not. I'm sure someone will answer that. Nice quick first takedown and a tilt to make it 7-0 early. Another takedown and tilt and I believe it went 14-1 heading into the 2nd period. Escape and quick takedown for the fourth straight tech. Hello Lucas Cochran! Interesting note, and not to take anything away from Cochran, but I think the announcers said his opponent weighed in at 183.something. This is the other weight thats up for grabs and I would love to see Lucas and Barr wrestle at some point.

285: Kerk came out with some heavy hands early. A quick takedown, turn or two, and a pin.

Final 41-3

Overall I think it was a great match. A few backups got a shot to go and wrestled hard. The stars put on a show. Tip of the hat to Drexel, I think all of their guys battled and made our guys earn a lot of points.

Only 2 guys in this match were starters at the same weight last year, MM and Kerk. LL didn't get a chance to go, and 2 backups at 41 and 49 with BB and Van Ness wrestling last night at the all star match. Taking that even futher, we could see 2 different starters at 57 and 97 at Lehigh December 8th.

Next up is the Army Black Knight Invitational. Not sure how many guys Cael and Co are planning to take, but we could see a wrestle off at 57 and 97 and I am assuming that will be the actual debut for LL.

We Are!

Was the picture on stream kinda strange looking for anyone else? I had lines through some of the picture. It reminded me of old Nintendo games.

How is the cut a factor when he looks exactly like he did a couple of years ago. Same exact issues.

Yeah, he'll probably be in some tight matches against good kids because he's good defensively. Maybe even win one or two.

But Kasak is a whole different animal l, even if they are wrestling close in the room which means nothing.
Because Alex was Teching kids like that at 165. It was NQ+ where his offense was more suspect. I could be wrong, and I’m not about to say Kasak wouldn’t be the better choice. But I’m willing to let the process play out.

Not trying to be wise, but I do not think I remember Alex teching anyone.

As much as I don't buy into the hype after a guy dominates an unranked guy in their first match I also don't buy into giving up on a guy after his first match either. Let's give him a couple chances, there is a lot of wrestling to go.
